---- Chapter 60: He Was Such a Gentleman Neither of them made a move to let go. They stayed locked in that silent embrace until Clara's eyes grew heavy with sleep. Only then did Aaron finally carry her to the bathroom like she weighed nothing at all. He ran a warm bath, adjusted the settings to massage mode, and began undoing her hair, carefully unclipping her earrings and removing her necklace one by one. His movements were gentle-almost reverent. Then he leaned in, pressed a soft kiss to her forehead, and murmured, "Don't soak too long. Just relax for twenty minutes.

I've set the jets, so you'll sleep like a baby afterward." Clara looked up at him, blinking drowsily, as if to ask-"What about you?" Aaron gave her a reassuring pat on the head. "I'm heading downstairs to shower. I'll be back ---- later." And just like that, he left. No lingering gaze. No hint of regret. Just turned and walked away... like a gentleman straight out of a romance novel. Clara stared at the closed door in disbelief. The lights were dim, the mood was right, her defenses were down... and he just walked out? Yep. He really was that much of a gentleman.

Ever since that night when he'd finally confessed, Aaron had been behaving like some honor student in a high school drama-never crossing the line, always respecting her space. Even when he kissed her, his hands stayed neatly on her back like they'd been glued there. It was almost funny. This was the same man who used to bulldoze over her boundaries like they were made of tissue paper. Now he was acting like an awkward teenager nursing his first crush. But Aaron had taken her words to heart.

---- She'd told him that real love didn't need to be rushed-that when the feelings were deep enough, everything else would naturally follow. So, he waited. He gave her space. Because if Clara still didn't feel safe, if she still couldn't trust him completely, then that was on him. He hadn't done enough. Thinking back to the past, he honestly wanted to slap himself. He used to justify everything with "I want you," ignoring the fear in her eyes, the hesitation in her voice. He'd let his desire run wild and trample all over her comfort. What a fool he'd been.

Now, whenever the heat got to be too much, he doused himself in cold showers and buried his nose in contracts until the temptation passed. Sure, it wasn't romantic, but at least it kept him from making another selfish mistake. So that night, he took a twenty-minute cold shower, reviewed a few legal briefs, and didn't head back upstairs until nearly an hour later. ---- By then, Clara had already fallen asleep, curled up beneath the blanket like a little cat. Her breathing was soft and even, and the expression on her face was so peaceful it made his chest ache.

Aaron slipped into bed beside her without a sound, turned to face her, and watched her fora long moment. Then, finally, he smiled-and closed his eyes. The next morning, Aaron was in his office going over paperwork with Derek when Olivia knocked. "Mr. Devereaux, mission accomplished. Linsey texted in her resignation this morning-she won't be returning." Aaron nodded, unfazed. "Good. File it and close the case." This was exactly what he'd expected after last night's gala. With Clara officially on his arm, his position as a married man had been made crystal clear.

He'd sent a message-and Linsey, at least, had gotten it. ---- Derek gave a low whistle. "I wasn't even at the event last night, but when I heard what Clara did... damn. She really played the long game." Aaron's lips quirked into a small smile. "She's incredible." Derek squinted at him like he was seeing a unicorn. "Look at you, Mr. Happily Married." Aaron raised an eyebrow. "Feel free to join the married life anytime." Derek grimaced. "No thanks. Scarlett's already dropping hints left and right. I'm drowning in pressure as it is." Aaron smirked.

"Still afraid of commitment?" Derek threw up his hands. "Bro, the world's full of beautiful women! Why lock yourself into one grave?" Aaron chuckled. "Well, don't say I didn't warn you. Scarlett's not short on admirers. Check this out." He handed Derek his phone.
