---- Chapter 75: Truth or Dare Clara tossed and turned, wide awake, unable to find sleep no matter what she tried. That stubborn ten-year age gap between her and Aaron kept gnawing at her mind. She couldn't help but feel jealous-jealous of Ariella's maturity, her worldliness, and the fact that she shared a history with Aaron that Clara didn't. That was the cruelest kind of pain for lovers. Even though her logical side told her it was all ancient history, deep down she wondered: if Aaron had truly been faithful, with his money and good looks, any woman would want him.
So why did she feel like she was always playing catch-up? Her thoughts spun out of control, dragging her into a storm of doubts. She didn't want to argue again-that would only punish Aaron, sure, but it would hurt her even more. ---- And it might just be exactly what Ariella wanted. She hadn't meant to disturb Aaron's sleep, but the more she shifted, the more her arm went numb, until finally she couldn't resist flipping over. Aaron had been drifting off into a soft haze, but the moment she moved, he woke up.

"Can't sleep?" He reached out and gently rubbed her back, trying to soothe her restless mind. Clara swatted his hand away. "You sleep. Leave me alone." His mind cleared a bit. He could tell she was still upset inside. "No way. I'm staying with you. What's on your mind?" "Nothing," Clara said sharply, hating how childish and petty she sounded. So they lay there, facing each other, eyes locked in the quiet darkness. After a few minutes, Clara finally broke the ---- silence. "Since we're both awake... let's play a game." Aaron immediately got a bad feeling and tried to back out.
"It's super late. If we don't sleep now, we'll be zombies tomorrow." Clara wasn't having it. "It's Christmas Eve! No work tomorrow." She glanced at the clock-it was already past midnight, Christmas Day officially. "Come on-Truth or Dare?" Aaron's stomach dropped. Sleep was gone for good now. He grabbed her hand, pressed it against his chest. "Doc, my heart can't take any more surprises tonight." Clara raised a skeptical eyebrow. "Guilty conscience?" Could he admit that? Nope. Not a chance. He sighed. "Fine. I'm an open book. Let's do it. How do we start?" Clara grinned. "Simple.
We take turns asking questions. The other has to answer honestly." ---- Aaron blinked. "What if someone can't answer?" Clara shook her head. "No mysteries here-how could you not answer?" Aaron frowned. "One rule first: no getting mad, no matter what's asked or said." Clara thought for a beat, then said, "I'll try not to lose my temper." Aaron wanted to throw in the towel right then and there. If she got mad, he'd suffer too. What was the point? He said, "Then I'm out." Clara narrowed her eyes. "If you don't play, your sentence gets longer!" Aaron was speechless.
Forced to join the game, he muttered, "Fine. Maybe I can negotiate some perks. What if you can't answer?" Clara laughed. She was fearless. "Do whatever you want!" They got up, settled on the couch under the warm light, facing each other. Clara said it was ---- better this way-they could watch each other's faces to catch any fibs. They played rock-paper-scissors. Aaron won and went first. Aaron: "Ready?" Clara: "Ready. Your turn to ask." Aaron bit his lip. "That doesn't count as a question!" "No choice-I'm counting it!" Clara shrugged and jumped in.
"Is she your first love?" Aaron already knew this one was coming-a killer question with no good answers. "Yes." She stayed calm. Lucky him. Now it was his turn. "When do you think the right time for our first time was?" Clara's cheeks flamed red like she'd been caught sneaking out. She paused, then said, "Last night." Aaron mentally gave her a high-five-that answer was pure gold.
