---- Chapter 147: They Could Afford to Lose This was the kind of spectacle people waited years to see. Almost everyone had their phones out, cameras rolling, desperate not to miss a single second of the heart-pounding race. Years ago, Aaron had been the undisputed number one on this track. But racing was a skill that dulled without practice. Rhys, on the other hand, was a regular. He practically lived here, showing up every few days to race. His driving was sharp, confident, and last week's victory was still fresh in everyone's minds.
Both cars tonight were beasts, evenly matched in performance. Which meant no one could really say who would win. ---- In one corner, the betting had already begun. Most people put their money on Rhys-he was the familiar face, after all. The younger crowd had never even seen Aaron race. Everyone in the circle knew Aaron had been buried in his business for years, too busy to show up at the track. The atmosphere was electric. The crowd counted down together. With a flash of the red flag, the two cars shot off the line like arrows, unleashing pure speed and fury across the track.
"Let's go!" Logan strolled up slowly, voice casual. "Put me down for a hundred grand on Aaron." His friend nudged him, half laughing. "Logan, don't underestimate Rhys. He crushed it last week!" ---- Others around them were quick to agree. "Come on, Aaron hasn't raced in years. Safer bet's on Rhys." "Why throw money away, Logan?" Logan just smirked. "You guys really have no idea." On the oval track, the black and blue supercars raced side by side, tearing through the curves. The roar of the engines and the shriek of tires blended into a thunderous symphony of speed.

Men and women lined the sides, screaming their lungs out. Some waved shirts, others flags, some glow sticks-everyone went wild. The race burned hotter by the second. Both cars kept neck and neck, refusing to give an inch. Rhys gripped the steering wheel so hard the veins on his hands stood out. His muscles were tense, sweat dripping down his temples as his heart pounded in sync with the engine. He had only one thought in his head: I can't ---- lose. I won't lose. Cassidy was tense too. Seeing Clara tonight had dragged her back to the past.
Cassidy came from a powerful family and had the looks to match. So what if her grades weren't perfect? But back then, Clara had outshined her in everything. The teachers and classmates all treated Clara like some kind of princess. And now, after all these years, Clara's man still made Rhys look like a joke. The thought burned her up inside. Aaron's face flashed through her mind-handsome, cold, refined. Just thinking about him made her pulse quicken. God, that man was irresistible. She turned to glance at Rhys behind the wheel. His eyes were wide, his face pale, hands trembling.
Not exactly the image of a confident man.
