---- Chapter 45: He Was Hiding That Pretty Well That night, Clara was chilling with a face mask on, FaceTiming Sierra while scrolling through WhatsApp. When the topic shifted to the office gossip from earlier that afternoon, Sierra burst out laughing so hard she practically choked. "Girl, your coworkers are a riot! Seriously, I need to know-how badly did that poor guy get traumatized?" Clara shook her head with an amused smile. "You'd never guess by how serious they act around patients. Total powerhouses all day. But the minute they're behind closed doors? It's like a whole new crew shows up.
Honestly, it's hard to keep up!" Aaron was in the bathroom brushing his teeth, overhearing with a sly grin. No wonder Clara had told him at dinner the pastries were good-but not to bring them again. ---- Sierra teased, "Better make tonight count then! That way you'll have some juicy new gossip to spill tomorrow." Clara played innocent. "I have no clue what you're talking about." "Oh please," Sierra snorted. "You're married now and still playing clueless? Don't tell me you're gonna skip out on one of life's greatest pleasures!
Take it from me-if you want your marriage to stay fun, talk more, do more!" "Okay, okay, enough!" Clara quickly changed the subject. "I ran into Austin this afternoon." Sierra's voice went flat. "Yeah, he dropped by to see Elsie." "He helped me out with something back in Silverton. I promised to treat him to dinner. Wanna come?" Sierra didn't even hesitate. "Nope. Not interested." Clara frowned. "I was thinking somewhere casual near our place. It'd be weird if it was just ---- us." Still, Sierra was firm.

"Not going." Clara sighed, hung up, peeled off her face mask, and headed to the bathroom to wash her face. That's when she spotted Aaron. "When did you come upstairs?" "Just now," he said. "Dinner plans for tomorrow?" "Yeah. Taking a friend out-he helped me with something." Aaron suggested, "Why not have him over here? T'll be home early anyway." Even if he hadn't planned to, he definitely would now. Clara having a one-on-one dinner with another man? No way. Clara shrugged. "Sure, that works." A moment later, she texted Sierra: "Aaron says bring the dinner here.
Pretty please, my gorgeous goddess? Can you show up?" Sierra replied a while later with a simple sticker: ---- OK. The next evening, Clara got home early to help Aunt Paige prep the ingredients. Right at six, the doorbell rang. Sierra had arrived. She gave Aaron a casual nod. "Fancy seeing you again, Counselor." Aaron returned the greeting with a slight smile. "Welcome." Sierra handed Clara a bouquet of lilies. Clara lit up. "These are gorgeous! Thank you!" Off to the side, Aaron quietly pulled out his phone and texted Matt: Order a bouquet. Deliver tomorrow.
Not long after, Austin showed up with Elsie in tow, holding a bottle of red wine. Clara raised an eyebrow. "No need to be so formal-it's just a casual dinner." Austin laughed. "You're the polite one! I didn't even help you and you're feeding me dinner." He kept it light with Clara but never took his ---- eyes off Sierra. Clara caught it instantly. The moment Elsie's voice echoed through the house, Leo dropped his toys and sprinted to greet her. Just like that, the whole place burst to life with chatter and laughter.
It had been over six months since they moved in, but tonight, the house finally felt truly alive. Dinner was a hit-everyone clicked effortlessly. Clara and Sierra were unstoppable chatterboxes, bouncing from topic to topic like they'd been doing it their whole lives. Meanwhile, Aaron and Austin found they'd both grown up in Silverton and now worked in the business world-different paths, but plenty of shared social circles. They hit it off quickly. Especially when Austin mentioned wanting to open a branch office in Greystone, and Aaron offered some professional insight.
Soon, they were deep in conversation. Before they knew it, they'd finished the bottle Austin brought-and cracked open another.
