---- Chapter 99: The Quarrel Sebastian returned to his study and pulled out a letter opener. His hand trembled as he carefully slit open Sue's letters. The moment her familiar handwriting appeared, his eyes burned, his vision blurring with tears. The first letter had to be from that very first week after he'd left: Sebastian, How are you adjusting to your new place? I don't even know how I made it through this week. I miss you so much. I think of you when I play the piano, when I read sheet music, when I eat, even when I try to sleep... Three long years have only just begun.
How am I supposed to survive this? Mr. Everett scolded me, said my letters would distract you, told me to write less. So I'll keep it short. Next time, send me your address so I can sneak you another note. :) ---- Come home soon! -Sue Sebastian nearly soaked the paper with his tears, but he still couldn't let go. It felt as if her voice had traveled through the pages, as if she were right there in front of him, writing every word with her whole heart. She had no idea that almost at the same moment, he'd mailed her a letter saying almost exactly the same thing.

The second letter came a month later. The graceful script he knew so well was gone, replaced with harsh strokes pressed so hard the pen had nearly torn through the page. Sebastian, I'm terrified. I think I might be pregnant. What am I supposed to do? Write back quickly! -Sue Sebastian's whole body jolted. He shot up from his chair, the paper shaking violently in his hands. For more than twenty years, it had never once crossed his mind. ---- Heart racing, he grabbed the third letter and tore it open. Sebastian, So this is who you are. You actually told me to get rid of the baby?
That's a life, Sebastian. A human life! I must have been blind to ever fall in love with you. From the moment your mother and sister-in-law dragged me into that hospital, your entire family became my enemies. I hate you. I never want to see you again. -Sue Sebastian crashed back down onto the stool. Cold swallowed his whole body; his mind went utterly blank. A reply? What reply? He had never received any of this. Then-his mother? His sister-in-law? His brother? He suddenly remembered how Theodore's handwriting looked almost identical to his own. ---- Sebastian stumbled out of the study.
The butler saw his ghostly pale face and nearly dropped what he was holding. Something was very, very wrong. "Get the driver!" Sebastian snapped, his voice raw with panic. "Take me to my brother's house-now!" Theodore lived with their mother, Judy, in another villa Sebastian had bought. By the time he arrived, the whole family was gathered around the dinner table, laughing, eating, warm. and harmonious like some picture-perfect painting. The maid rushed to add another place setting the moment Sebastian walked in. Everyone greeted him warmly.
"Sebastian, have you eaten yet?" Judy asked with a smile. "Come have some soup." Grace, his sister-in-law, bustled up eagerly, ladling soup into a bow! for him. Sebastian swept his gaze across them all. The ---- entire Storm family sat there, smiling, carefree, radiant with happiness. To him, it was nothing but mockery. When he didn't answer, the table fell quiet. Only then did they notice his face-ashen, furious, trembling with barely restrained rage. Theodore rose first, concerned. "Sebastian, what's wrong?" Sebastian locked eyes with him, his voice cutting each word like a blade.
"Did you forge letters to Sue in my handwriting?" Theodore froze. He had lived an honest, plodding life, never guilty of much worse than small mistakes. The accusation yanked a memory straight to the surface. His lips fumbled, "N-no... I mean-I don't remember... it was decades ago, how could I still-" Sebastian needed no more. The truth was written all over his brother's face. Fury ripped through him, uncontrollable. His fist swung, connecting hard. The room exploded into chaos. Grace shrieked and threw herself in front of Theodore.
