---- to grab the utensils. Scarlett groaned inwardly. This extravagant misunderstanding... should I clarify? Nah. It's New Year-let Mom be happy a bit. The four of them sat down. Though ostensibly just a meal, Scarlett's mother peppered Cyrus with subtle questions. He answered politely, keeping the atmosphere surprisingly calm. Scarlett squirmed, heart racing with unease. Then the doorbell rang. Scarlett excused herself. "I'll see who it is." Through the peephole, she saw Derek. Panic surged. Why now? She opened the door, intending to speak outside-but Derek shoved a bouquet in her hands.
"Scarlett... let's get married!" Scarlett tried to cover his mouth, but it was too late. The clatter of utensils echoed from inside. Derek finally noticed the scene. What is this? Cyrus having dinner with Scarlett's parents? He glared at Scarlett, barely containing his fury. Scarlett's father stayed calm. "Scarlett, this is your ---- friend, right? Invite him in." Scarlett's mother recovered. "Yes! Come in and have dinner with us." Derek forced a smile. "Mr. and Mrs. Campbell, Happy New Year! I'm Scarlett's boyfriend, Derek. Sorry I didn't bring gifts-will make it up next time." "No worries!
Just come eat," her mother said, welcoming him. Scarlett exchanged a glance with Cyrus. Cyrus didn't want her to feel awkward. "Mr. and Mrs. Campbell, thank you for this meal. I'll go now and visit another day." After Cyrus left, Scarlett said, "Mom and dad, you eat first. Derek and I need to talk." She dragged Derek into a room and shut the door. "Why are you back now?" Derek pouted. "If I hadn't come back, someone would've taken my wife! Why is Cyrus here?" Scarlett looked guilty. She had used Cyrus to prevent her parents from losing their temper on New Year's. "I just got home myself.

I didn't expect my parents to show up. You should go back first." ---- Derek repeated firmly, "I said we should get married!" Scarlett didn't share his excitement. "Go back for now. We'll talk later." Derek's fiery enthusiasm sputtered out. He had given her just a ring before, and she had been thrilled. But now? Does she like Cyrus now? "No way!" Scarlett denied. "What are you thinking? And why do you want to get married all of a sudden?" Derek sighed with relief. "You know, we've been together so long. We're supposed to get married. I wanted freedom before... but now, I want you.
I want a family. I love you!" He kissed her, holding her close. "Say yes?" "Wait!" Scarlett leaned back slightly, creating a little distance. "I have something to tell you." "Hmm?" She bit her lip. "I'm pregnant." Derek leapt back in shock. "When did you...?" "Almost three months ago." "Why didn't you tell me?" Derek exploded. Scarlett felt wronged. "You said you don't like kids. I asked you before." ---- "That's not about my own child!" Derek fumed. "Do you think I'm an irresponsible man? That I would let you be a single mom?" Scarlett nodded. "Yes." Derek was speechless.
"Still, you should've told me!" Tears streamed down Scarlett's face. "Do you think I wanted to hide this? Do you know the pressure I've been under?" "Sorry! Sorry! It's my fault!" Derek held her tightly. "I've been a jerk! Weak, selfish, afraid of marriage. But now I've thought it through. I'll be a good husband, a good father. I'll take care of you and our child!" Scarlett cried freely, overwhelmed. Happiness had arrived so suddenly, washing away all the fear and anxiety she had carried for so long.
