---- Chapter 111: Family Dinner As twilight fell and city lights flickered on, Clara and Aaron arrived at the Devereaux Residence for dinner. Even before they stepped out of the car, laughter and lively chatter spilled from the living room. Tonight, it seemed, everyone had gathered. Aaron held Clara's hand gently. "Don't worry. Say what you want, do what you want. Don't feel constrained by anyone." These weren't the days twenty years ago when he had to rely on anyone's favor. His wife didn't need to tiptoe around anyone. "Nervous?
What, in case I do something wrong and you reject me?" Clara teased, winking at him playfully. Aaron's eyes crinkled with amusement. "How could that ever happen?" "Even if you did!" Clara smirked, giving him a sly side-eye. "Being with you is exhausting. Every night you wear me out, keep me up too late-I've often thought about running away!" Aaron froze mid-step. His wife was in a mischievous mood again! He leaned close and whispered in her ear, ---- "Then maybe tonight we should get an early start." Clara immediately reached for his waist.
"I'm sleeping with our son tonight!" Aaron dodged lightly and caught her hand. "Stop teasing me! People are going to laugh at us." Clara glanced back and indeed saw the old butler watching them with a knowing smile. She quickly tucked her hand into Aaron's arm and walked with mock seriousness toward the foyer. The old butler clicked his tongue in amazement. He had seen Aaron grow up but had never seen him so lively and cheerful. The moment they stepped into the foyer, warm air enveloped them-it was a completely different world from the chilly evening outside.
Aaron took her coat and handed it to a nearby servant. "Aaron's here!" Maverick's voice boomed warmly. Everyone in the living room paused and turned to look. Standing beside Aaron was a strikingly beautiful woman ina pale pink, elbow-length dress. Hand-embroidered pink flowers crawled upward from the hem, lending her an elegant, festive aura. Her figure was delicate and perfectly proportioned, and her ---- presence radiated refinement. Pearl earrings framed her gentle smile, but her eyes were the most captivating-bright, lively, and impossible not to like. Maverick rose, delighted.

"This must be your wife, huh? Not bad! Come over here and sit!" Aaron smiled faintly, taking Clara's hand as they approached. "Grandpa, you're looking well! This is my wife, Clara." Clara returned a polite smile. "Hello, Grandpa!" "Good, good! You're a lucky man, my boy. You two make a perfect couple. You've got good taste!" Maverick's mood brightened as he looked at his accomplished grandson. "Why didn't you bring the child?" Clara explained, "He played all day and wouldn't wake up. We'll have him call you in a couple of days." Maverick nodded approvingly. "Good!
He looks just like Aaron at that age-smart and adorable." Aaron inwardly chuckled. Smart and adorable, he thought. Back then, they had starved him! Seeing that Aaron didn't introduce anyone else, Clara smiled politely at the group and nodded in greeting ---- before taking her seat next to him. Richard, naturally, didn't look pleased. Aaron didn't even introduce him to Clara-he wasn't about to pretend everything was fine. After a few pleasantries, they all took their seats for dinner. At the round table, Maverick sat at the head.
To his right were Clara and Aaron, followed by Aaron's two half-brothers, their wives, and children. To his left were Richard and his wife, Deborah. Two more people caught Clara off guard. It was Linda and Luke! Her father Owen's current wife and son. What an unexpected twist of fate! Deborah, noticing Clara's gaze, smiled. "This is probably your first time here, Clara. That's my sister Linda and her son Luke. They're visiting for a short stay." Clara's smile was polite but distant. So it ran in the family-both sisters liked playing the stepmother role.
She nodded lightly and avoided further eye contact. Linda mirrored her courtesy, smiling politely and quickly looking away. Maverick, taking in the full house of children and ---- grandchildren, felt his heart swell with joy. He raised his glass. "This year, we're all here! Our family has grown! Let the past stay behind, and welcome the new year! May our family prosper and everything go smoothly in the coming year!" Everyone smiled and raised their glasses in unison. Aaron clinked his glass against his grandfather's. "Happy New Year, Grandpa!" Clara followed suit.
"Wishing you good healtht" Maverick flushed with delight and laughed heartily, downing his drink. His hand unconsciously rested on his chest. Clara quickly warned, "Grandpa, don't drink too much. Especially with palpitations, it's better to avoid alcohol." Maverick's curiosity peaked. "How did you know I have palpitations?" Clara asked gently, "Do you often wake up at night thirsty, with palpitations or shortness of breath? I could tell from your complexion." "Yes, Are you a doctor?" Maverick asked, impressed. "Yes," Clara replied. "Who trained you?" he asked. ---- "Lucian," Clara said.
Maverick's excitement bubbled over, and he slapped the table. "Ah! Mr. Crowe! I used to go to his clinic for treatments. After it closed, finding a good doctor became so difficult!" Clara nodded. "Yes. Lucian is retired now and living in Greystone." "Unbelievable! I never thought I'd meet one of Mr. Crowe's students! You must help me check my prescriptions later," Maverick said eagerly.
Confident in her expertise, Clara smiled and said, "No problem." Deborah, who had always bent over backward for him but rarely received a smile, was silently irritated watching Clara laugh and chat with Maverick. Looking at the other two daughters-in-law, who only focused on eating and never tried to win Maverick's favor, her frustration deepened. After dinner, over tea in the living room, Maverick pulled out his usual prescriptions. Clara carefully reviewed them, asked about his routines, and then rewrote the prescriptions in a more suitable form.
"Grandpa, the original prescriptions were effective, but I made some minor adjustments. After one course, ---- your palpitations should lessen. After three courses, you can pause the medication. I'll give you a dietary plan then," Clara explained, handing over the new prescriptions. Maverick accepted them, admiration shining in his eyes. Aaron was excellent, and his wife was equally remarkable. He regretted not nurturing Aaron more as a child, which had created a distance between them.
