---- And there it was-that little blush on her cheeks. Clara narrowed her eyes. "Something's up! Spill it! Now!" She gave Sierra a knowing look. "We've been friends for over ten years. Girl, I can read your face like a script. One look and I know what kind of trouble you're brewing." Sierra rolled her eyes. "Keep it classy, would you? Geez." Then she added, "Nothing's going on! He's just been busy with the new company, and I figured I'd lay off the nagging. I mean, if he doesn't make money, where's my child support gonna come from, right?
Now go, Detective Holmes!" She gave Clara and Leo a gentle shove into the car. Truth be told, Austin had changed a lot lately. So Sierra was trying-trying to forgive the past, and herself. When they got to Lucian's quaint courtyard, Clara was greeted like family. Leo loved it there. He fed the bunnies, chased ---- the chicks, and was completely in his element. Lucian was all smiles, trailing after them like a doting grandpa. "Leo, winter break's almost here. Want to stay with Grandpa for a few days?" Leo beamed. "Yeah! I wanna stay! Mommy, can I" Clara nodded.
The place was quiet, and Lucian must get lonely sometimes. "Of course! It's close by. You can come whenever you want." Lucian practically lit up. "Perfect, perfect! I'll get your room ready." Clara asked, "Has your son called recently? Will he be home for New Year's?" Lucian sighed, "He called a couple days ago-said he probably won't make it this year." Clara smiled warmly. "I've got ten days off. I'll come spend the holiday with you." Lucian's face brightened. "That's wonderful! Bring Leo's dad too.

I still haven't met him-that's just wrong!" ---- Clara had already told him about the marriage on her last visit. "Definitely! I'll make sure he comes by and gives you his New Year's greetings." Andy turned out to be a total gem. She'd been helping nonstop since she arrived-carrying bags, watching Leo, even assisting the housekeeper in the kitchen. Absolutely rare! Clara couldn't help but think-maybe it was true that great people kept great company. Look at Aaron's inner circle-not a single ordinary person among them. Tristan ran a fleet of restaurants with military precision.
The man was a legend. Derek's parents were a judge and a district commissioner. No wonder he was so good with people. The firm would fall apart without him. Matt was sharp, dependable, and tireless. And now there was Andy. Clara had just met her today, but she was already thoroughly impressed. ---- "Clara, come here!" Lucian called from the study. "An old friend dropped by yesterday with a patient-really rare condition. Come in and let me tell you about it..." "Coming!" Clara replied. She was always fascinated by rare medical cases. Medicine was endless.
Lucian had been a doctor for over forty years and still came across new conditions. These days, Lucian barely took on patients. The ones he did were long-time friends who were impossible to turn down. Clara thought that was perfect. It kept him company without exhausting him. They chatted right up until dinnertime. The housekeeper came in, grinning. "Clara, where'd you find this girl? She's incredible! Tonight's whole meal-she cooked it! Girls who can cook like this are a rare breed these days!" Once everyone tasted the dishes, the compliments rolled in. Lucian beamed.
"Young lady, you have to come ---- by more often!" Andy laughed. "No problem, Grandpa! As long as Mrs. Devereaux brings me, I'm in!" Lucian looked at her sweet, cheerful face and couldn't help but wonder-when was his son going to bring home a daughter-in-law? The waiting was killing him! After saying their goodbyes, Clara dropped Leo off at home and handed him over to Aaron. Aaron gave her a deadpan look. "So you're really gonna leave us behind?" Clara ignored him, already halfway through changing her outfit-Andy was still waiting downstairs!
Aaron could only call after her, "Just remember-we've got one stay-at-home kid and one stay-at-home husband here. Don't stay out too late!"
