---- By the time they finally finished dawdling and changed into fresh clothes, it was already close to eleven. The holiday meant the roads were unusually clear, and traffic flowed smooth as silk. "Where are we going?" Clara asked. "Food first," Aaron said smoothly as he spun the wheel. They ended up at an upscale restaurant beside the racetrack. The moment they stepped inside, the manager hurried over with a smile. "Mr. Devereaux, it's been a while! This way, please." Aaron returned the smile. "I've been a little busy lately." Clara leaned in, her lips curving. "Tell me, Mr.
Lawyer, you don't own this place too, do you?" "Not this one," Aaron said, amused. "But you could still eat for free. A colleague owns it, and I own a small share." Clara's eyes sparkled. "That's incredible! At this rate, I won't ever have to bring my wallet again-T'll just drop your name." Aaron chuckled, the corners of his mouth softening. "Then I'll make sure my name carries even more weight." ---- The restaurant didn't have private dining rooms, but tall greenery split the space into cozy, private alcoves. The manager seated them by the window, overlooking the vast, open racetrack.

The view was gorgeous. They hadn't been seated long before people began drifting over to greet Aaron. He handled each with practiced charm, introducing Clara along the way. Clara recognized a few faces vaguely. She must have seen them at the charity gala, though she couldn't remember names. There had been too many people that night, and unless someone had stood out, she'd long since forgotten. At last, their food arrived, and the interruptions finally stopped. Clara leaned in. "Feels like this is your turf. You come here often?" Aaron shrugged. "Now and then.
A lot of my friends hang out here. Sometimes we meet here to talk business." Clara looked around approvingly. "It really is a nice place." "If you like it, we'll come more often," Aaron promised. "I've even got a horse here. I'll show you after we eat." ---- Clara blinked. "Wait, you know how to ride?" "Only the basics." He smirked. "Want to learn?" She shook her head quickly. "Nope. I'd just fall." "I'm a great teacher," Aaron said with confidence. "If anyone falls, it'll be me-not you." The moment they set their silverware down, people started drifting over again.
To keep Clara from getting bored, Aaron tugged her toward the stables. They stopped in front of a magnificent black stallion. Its body was sleek and powerful, its eyes sharp and bright. Tall and proud, it radiated energy and elegance as it chewed its feed. Clara didn't know much about horses, but even she could tell this one was cared for like royalty. Aaron stroked the stallion's head, and the horse nuzzled his palm with affectionate familiarity. Clara had never been this close to such a massive animal before. Watching it cuddle up to Aaron made her laugh. Aaron held out a sugar cube.
"This is Moonfire. Go on, feed him. Say hi. You'll warm up to each other." Clara hesitantly held out the cube, nearly jumping when the horse's warm breath puffed against her hand. ---- But Moonfire took the sugar neatly, then fixed those bright, demanding eyes on her as if to say, Got any more? Clara grinned. Kinda cute, actually. Just then, a rider walked over and started chatting with Aaron. That's when Clara learned that Moonfire was about to compete in a race. They made their way up to the stands, where the seats were already packed.
The crowd buzzed with energy, laughter, and excitement, the atmosphere electric.
