---- Aaron's hands slid over her waist, wandering upward. "Not going to the office today." Clara rolled her eyes. "Even if you don't, I don't have time for you. I miss Leo too much." Aaron sighed in defeat. "Fine. I'll have Andy take you to pick him up later." Meanwhile, Matt had been waiting in the car for over forty minutes. Luckily, the company WhatsApp group kept him entertained. As usual, the first question popped up: "Has Mr. Devereaux cooled down yet?" Matt replied with a meme: Still unknown. The group chat exploded with chatter. Joanna: "Ugh, dilemma.
I've got a date tonight and my dress is kinda short. Think the boss will glare at me? Should I change?" Eve @Matt: "Five-minute warning before he walks in, please! I need to hide in the bathroom. l accidentally brushed up against a guy with a bucket of fish this morning. I stink!" ---- Max: "Can someone double-check my slides?" Jennifer: "How hot should the boss's coffee be when I bring it? I can't decide!" Then Matt spotted the boss approaching and immediately leapt out to open the back door. "Good morning, Mr. Devereaux." Aaron only gave him one word in reply.

"Morning." But Matt detected a subtle shift-less icy than usual, almost warmer. He glanced discreetly through the mirror. The boss's face was as expressionless as ever, but his eyes... softer. At the first long red light, Matt sneaked another look. Aaron wasn't impatient at all. He was scrolling his phone, lips curved faintly upward. With twenty-eight seconds left on the countdown, Matt shot off a quick message to the group: All clear! ---- The chat exploded again. "Thank God!" "Wonderful!" "Wonderful." "WONDERFUL!" Matt smirked at the messages.
Over at Lucian's place, Clara knew she was in for a lecture. Lucian stormed at her the moment she stepped inside. "Clara! Something this serious happens and you don't even tell me?" Clara spoke softly. "I just didn't want you to get mad. Besides, it's not that bad." Lucian jabbed a finger at her injury, furious. "Not that bad? What would you call serious then?" Leo, perched on a stool, asked worriedly, "Mommy, does it hurt a lot?" ---- Clara smiled at him. "Not at all. Mommy's just as tough as Leo." Leo had filled out lately, probably from all the running around.
Sitting on her lap, he felt heavier than before. Lucian barked, "Get inside! I need to check you properly." Clara followed him into the study, looking pitiful. "Lucian, my head still hurts a little." It was the only way to soften him. At his age-well into his sixties-anger wasn't good for his health. Sure enough, most of his fury melted away. He quickly sat her down and carefully examined her, peeling back the bandage on her neck to inspect the scabbed wound, then checking the cut on her head. Only after confirming the healing progress did he relax. "You're recovering well.
The bruising on your head isn't serious. I'll prescribe some medicine and you'll need hot compresses for a couple of days. You lost too ---- much blood, so your body's a bit weak. Eat well to replenish." Clara nodded. "Got it." Lucian said firmly, "Follow my method. Since you can't work anyway, why don't you stay here a few days?" Clara agreed readily. "Alright." At lunch, she found her place set with dishes prepared just for her. Andy went back to fetch her some clothes, and after Clara napped with Leo, the butler had her medicine ready for hot compress therapy.
That afternoon, Clara helped sun-dry herbs, flipped through some of Lucian's old books, and checked on the chicks Leo had been raising. Life without work felt... blissful.
