---- Chapter 51: You'd Better Reward Me 'Aaron stepped back into the room he'd lived in as a child, and the familiarity hit him like a wave. The room was pretty spacious, but the decor hadn't changed-it was the same old minimalist setup. At least the bedsheets were fresh, and the couch and desk looked relatively tidy. Still, dust clung to the windowsills and corners. That was classic Deborah-she only ever cleaned what could be seen at a glance. But he was only staying for one night. It wasn't a big deal. As for the servants? They were just playing the game-going whichever way the wind blew.
After all, who was going to waste effort on Aaron, a kid with a dead mom and no one who cared about him? Walking down memory lane didn't bring him any warm fuzzy feelings. Most of his childhood memories were just a blur of gnawing hunger. Everything else had faded into the ---- background. Maybe that was why he had a little more patience for Grandpa. Because he still remembered the bliss of getting a full meal at his place. When he was older and still starving in school, he trained himself to focus on reading-anything to distract himself from the hunger.

Looking back now, it didn't even feel that painful anymore. Everything he'd been through had made him who he was. What was there to complain about? If he'd grown up in a happy, cushy home, he'd probably have ended up like his two half-brothers-useless trust-fund idiots wasting their lives on booze and parties. In comparison, he much preferred the man he'd become. Aaron opened his suitcase, took a quick shower, and stretched out on the bed to FaceTime Clara. It took a while for the call to connect. When her face finally popped up on the screen, she had just returned to her room.
"Where'd you go?" he asked. ---- Clara replied, "I was in Leo's room, putting him to bed. I didn't want to wake him, so I came back to my room. before answering." Aaron raised a brow. "Seriously? You've got the nerve to sleep next to another man?" Clara teased, "What, you jealous of our own son now?" Aaron grinned. "I'm jealous of your nightgown, too." Lately, Clara had been wearing pajama pants to bed. But tonight, in a rare good mood with no one bothering her, she'd decided to wear a brand-new nightgown. She didn't catch his drift.
"What's there to be jealous of about a nightgown?" Aaron deadpanned, "Because it gets to be that close to you. Clara's cheeks flushed. "Are you... trying to seduce me?" Aaron smirked. "Seduce you? This is nothing. I'm just speaking from the heart." Clara narrowed her eyes and laughed. "Wow, you're really the king of spicy one-liners, huh?" Noticing his background didn't look like a hotel, Clara asked, "Where are you, anyway?" ---- "My childhood room," Aaron said. "Wanna see it?" Clara nodded eagerly. "Yeah, I do." Aaron flipped the camera and gave her a quick sweep of the room. Clara blinked.
"It's so... empty. Weren't you ever scared of ghosts as a kid?" Aaron chuckled. "Ghosts? Nah. I was only scared of being hungry. If a ghost had shown up back then, I probably would've asked if it had anything to eat." Clara's heart tightened. "Did you really go hungry that often?" Aaron was about to comfort her when someone knocked on the door. He didn't hang up. Still holding the phone, he walked over to answer it. Standing in the dimly lit hallway was Linsey. She was dressed to kill in a silky, wine-red camisole nightgown.
Her voluminous curls spilled down her bare back, and the curve of her body was impossible to ignore. Full makeup, flawless skin-clearly, she'd come prepared. The moment he opened the door, she raised the bottle of red wine in her hand and spoke in a sultry voice,
