---- home with his parents, eating while the TV played a show starring Scarlett. He watched her intently. Derek's mom scowled, exasperated. "Did you hear what I just said? Tomorrow at eleven, go meet Alvin's daughter. Don't forget!" Derek rolled his eyes. "No way." He pointed at Scarlett on the screen. "Alvin's daughter could never be this pretty. Someday, I'll find a wife just this gorgeous!" "Pfft!" his mom scoffed. "The problem is, you have to actually bring someone home!" "Soon, soon," Derek replied lazily. Give me a timeline at least!" his mom pressed. "I retire next year!
I want a grandson!" Derek smirked, mischievous. "Why don't you consider having a second kid yourself?" Before she could reply, Derek's dad slammed his fork onto the table near Derek's hand. "What nonsense is that?!" Seizing the moment, Derek pushed his bowl aside. "I'm full! I'm heading to a high school reunion. You guys enjoy your meal." And just like that, he walked out. He hadn't intended to go, but home was unbearable. ---- Two classmates he had stayed close to had convinced him to come. The reunion was held in a KTV lounge.

Derek paused at the door to the private room, utterly bewildered. He checked the number against his phone. Yes, it was correct. But inside, the room was packed with children-some two or three, some seven or eight, and even a few over ten. There were easily more than a dozen in total. It looked like he had wandered into someone else's family party. He was about to turn around when a familiar face popped out-his high school friend, Brody. Brody grabbed him and pulled him inside. "Derek! Why aren't you coming in?" Derek stared. Brody looked nothing like he remembered. Brody patted his shoulder.
"Man! How are you keeping yourself so well?" Derek jabbed Brody's belly. "What is that? I wouldn't recognize you on the street!" Brody scratched his head, embarrassed. "Middle-aged spread, cut me some slack!" ---- Soon, other classmates from high school came over to greet him. Seeing the familiar faces, Derek realized he hadn't walked into the wrong room after all. When Brody introduced the boy beside him as his twelve-year-old son, Derek's jaw nearly dropped. Brody chuckled. "Close your mouth! So shocked, huh? Haven't you thought about our ages?" Derek did the math. Yep. Made sense.
Nearby, Mike, who had just had his third child, added, "We all got married and had kids!" Other classmates chimed in, chatting about their children, from newborns to school stress to job hunting. The room buzzed with life. Finally, attention turned to Derek. The girls noticed he wasn't talking much-he had always been the standout in school. Classmate A: "Derek, why didn't you bring a partner?" Classmate B: "How many kids do you have now?" Classmate C: "How do you stay in shape?
Teach my husband-he refuses!" Derek felt a deep shame wash over him, like everyone ---- else aced the test while he scored zero. It stung more than being nagged by his parents about marriage. After a long pause, he muttered, "I'm unmarried." "OMG! Did I hear that right?!" "Quick! Someone call the homeroom teacher! Remember when he bet Derek would marry before graduation after catching him writing love letters?" "You're amazing! The only unmarried one in our class!" "What's going on, Derek? How can someone this handsome not have a wife?" "Come on!
I'll introduce my cousin..." "I've got a good lead-the class beauty from the other class, divorced, no kids..." The room erupted-some teasing, some laughing, some sincere. Derek felt utterly trapped under the chaos, mortified beyond words.
