---- Chapter 91: Nothing a Kiss Couldn't Fix Clara had been stuck in the hospital for seven long days, and her whole body felt like it had tuned to mush, The gash on her neck looked terrifying at first, but now it had begun to scab over. Ugly, yes-but healing, little by little. Her head, though, was another story. The bruising refused to fade, and every so often a sharp stab of pain would remind her it was still there. The pain wasn't unbearable, but the risk lingered like a shadow. The doctor insisted she stay under observation.
Clara decided she'd rather go home and recover there, coming back on schedule for checkups. After all, it was year's end-always a busy time. Even with Aaron hovering around, his company did nothing for her injuries. Under her repeated prodding, he finally returned to the office. And that was when everyone-everyone but Clara-noticed Aaron's dark storm-cloud mood. On the surface, he looked the same as always: cool, ---- aloof, quiet. But no one dared test him. Something in his silence carried the promise of a brewing storm, the kind that could break loose at any second.
One tiny mistake in a meeting, one small typo ina report-Aaron would slam down on it so hard people wanted to cry. Matt was the most miserable of all. Driving the boss anywhere felt like crossing a minefield. Every red light, every speed bump, his heart was in his throat, terrified that one jolt might ignite Aaron's temper. Even Derek, who usually strolled around like he owned the place, started detouring to avoid passing Aaron's office. "Mr. Mitchell," Matt whispered one day, "what's wrong with Mr. Devereaux?" How would Derek know? The work was done, the problems handled-what else was there?

So every morning, the office gossip became, "Is Mr. Devereaux in a good mood today?" Everyone sat in their WhatsApp group, waiting for Matt to report back with the day's forecast. Tristan, poor guy, had just arrived and was already ---- drowning. With only a short stay before heading back to Silverton, he had no choice but to bite down and grind through the mountain of work. But finishing it all before year's end? Impossible. Two more days passed before Clara realized something was off with Aaron. They had been sleeping in separate rooms.
From the second day she'd been hospitalized, they hadn't shared a bed. At first, she assumed it was because he didn't want to bump her injury, and the hospital cot was too cramped anyway. But now? She was home, mostly healed. So why were they still like this? It felt like they'd fallen back to the awkward early days of their marriage. When Clara ate breakfast, Aaron would be just returning from his run, on his way to the shower and then off to work. When Clara went to bed, Aaron would be in the study burning the midnight oil. Their lives ran on two separate tracks, barely touching.
Then, one night, Greystone was slammed by the first winter storm of the season.
