---- Chapter 128: Was It Just an Accident? Derek froze in panic, almost forgetting that Cyrus was right there, ready to snatch Scarlett away at any moment. He quickly gave in to Scarlett without a fight. Austin clinked his glass with him and gave a sympathetic smile. "We all went through it, man. Just hang in there." And just like that, a brotherhood was formed, sealed with drinks and hundreds of rounds of discussion about the challenges of pregnant women. Aaron turned to Clara with curiosity. "What were you like when you were pregnant?" Clara smiled softly. "Leo was such an angel baby.
My pregnancy went really smoothly." Aaron let out a regretful sigh. "I wish I could have been there with you back then." Clara smiled again, her voice gentle. "Honestly, I've forgotten a lot of the little details. But I remember being full of excitement, so everything felt wonderful. Now when I look back, I mostly remember how ---- adorable Leo was when he was born." Sierra, sitting nearby, cut in. "Why regret anything? Just have a second baby and experience it all over again!" Scarlett's eyes lit up. "Oh! Then let's have babies together!" Derek groaned. "Women's friendships are impossible.
You go to the bathroom together, and now you want to give birth together too?" Scarlett raised an eyebrow. "Is that a problem?" Derek, realizing he was cornered, raised his hands in surrender. "No, no! I just... find wives' logic fascinating!" Sierra and Clara both gave him thumbs-up. "Now that's asmart man." The next day, everyone had work. Derek and Scarlett had already booked the first slot at the courthouse to register their marriage, so after dinner, everyone headed home early. Aaron went back to the office, and Alvin took over the responsibility of picking Clara up from the hospital.
When her shift ended, Clara walked out and got into Alvin's car. "Thanks, Alvin. Sorry to bother you every day lately." ---- Alvin smiled. "No trouble at all. It's my job. Parking in front of the hospital is a nightmare anyway, so I waited here where it's quieter." Clara nodded. "That's fine. We're not ina rush. A few extra steps won't hurt." She fastened her seatbelt, glanced at the hospital entrance, and saw crowds moving in and out-but no one she recognized. Still, she couldn't shake the feeling that someone was watching her. Maybe she was just imagining things after being so busy.

After long holidays, patient numbers always spiked. Kids with stomachaches, travelers struggling with digestion, and people catching colds from sudden temperature drops-it had been non-stop that week. A few days later, as Clara finished work again, the sun was already low in the sky. Walking out of the hospital, that uneasy feeling returned. She looked around carefully. No familiar faces. Was it just her imagination? She took a deep breath and headed to the usual spot where Alvin waited. At that moment, an old van parked by the curb suddenly started up, moving slowly along the sidewalk.
Clara didn't think much of it. The road and sidewalk ---- were close together anyway. But the engine's growl grew louder. She turned her head and froze as the van swerved across the line toward the sidewalk. For a few seconds, she clung to hope, thinking the driver was just distracted and would straighten out. But her hope evaporated as the van suddenly accelerated toward her. "Watch out!" Clara shouted. Two other pedestrians were on the sidewalk. She stepped back quickly, but her heel slipped, and she fell hard onto the pavement.
The screech of tires ripped through the air, sending waves of terror through her chest. The van jumped the curb and slammed into the flowerbed, stopping just three meters away. If she hadn't dodged, she would have been crushed. Clara scrambled to her feet, wincing at the sting in her palm. It was scraped raw. What kind of maniac drives like this? People nearby started cursing, voices full of anger and shock, Clara looked toward the driver and froze. The man wasn't panicking. His eyes were cold and locked on her.
---- Then, without hesitation, he adjusted the wheel and aimed the van at her again. Her heart leapt. Was she the target? A surge of fear hit her like a wave. Her legs shook as she staggered backward. The van adjusted its angle and barreled straight at her. Just as she braced for impact, a figure lunged forward and tackled her to the ground. They rolled across the pavement, the van roaring past where she had been standing. It skidded back onto the road, slammed into another car, and finally came to a stop. Clara lay on the ground, trembling, her face drained of all color. "Mrs.
Devereaux, are you alright?" Alvin's voice sounded right next to her. Clara blinked, realizing what had happened. Alvin had been the one to jump in and pull her out of harm's way. She tried to get up, but her legs wouldn't hold. She didn't know where she hurt herself-only that she couldn't move. Luckily, they were right in front of the hospital. Alvin ---- quickly brought a wheelchair and helped her inside. Outside, chaos erupted. Pedestrians shouted in shock. Drivers argued fiercely. Clara's mind remained blank until her colleagues started checking her.
The antiseptic smell grounded her back in reality. Thankfully, her injuries weren't serious. Her palm was scraped, but they cleaned the dirt out, disinfected it, and bandaged it carefully. Her right ankle was swollen like a steamed bun. It wasn't broken, just badly bruised. They massaged it, wrapped it, and applied ice. Even with a skilled doctor, every touch sent jolts of pain up her leg, Clara bit down hard on a towel, forcing herself not to scream. Ten minutes felt like an eternity. Since everyone there was a colleague, she tried to stay composed. Still, tears welled in her eyes.
By the time Aaron arrived, Clara had been moved to a private ward. Once everyone left, Clara threw herself into his arms and broke down. "Why am I so unlucky? I was just walking, and I almost got hit by a car. It scared me so much!" ---- Aaron held her tightly. "It's over now. You're safe." She cried until her sobs turned into shaky breaths. "Is Alvin okay?" "He's fine," Aaron said softly. "Thank God. He reacted so fast..." Aaron nodded. "He's a trained soldier. He's also a witness, so he's giving his statement now. Drink some water and get some rest." Clara took a few sips and lay back.
Exhaustion hit her like a wave. Between the shock, pain, and chaos, she couldn't fight off sleep. She drifted off almost instantly. Aaron sat beside her, still on edge. His mind ran over every face, every event of the past few months. Nothing seemed out of place. But his gut told him something wasn't right. Could it really have been just an accident?
