---- "Aaron's showing off again!" "Total overprotective husband mode!" Clara's cheeks flamed bright red, and she dropped her gaze in embarrassment. She hadn't thought about that. How could anyone play pool ina short dress? "Alright, alright! We get it, you're the king of doting husbands. Let's keep the game going!" Logan laughed and pulled Aaron back toward the table. Brooklyn glanced down at her own thigh-skimming skirt and suddenly felt ridiculous. Clara, still blushing, lost interest in the game and left with Olivia. The two of them wandered out to the garden on the first floor.

They sat by the poolside lounge chairs, chatting quietly. Olivia sighed dreamily. "Aaron really treats you well." Clara covered her warm face with her hands. "Can you please not tease me?" "I'm not teasing," Olivia said seriously. "I mean it. I'm. honestly jealous." ---- Clara teased back, "Please. Tristan treats you pretty well too." Olivia tilted her head, thinking for a moment before letting out a soft sigh. "Don't you think this crowd is... a bit much?" Clara couldn't disagree.

'As much as she wanted to help Olivia and Tristan get closer, she had to admit the gap between their worlds was obvious. Even she still felt it sometimes, despite being married to Aaron for quite a while now. Whenever he was around his friends, there was this effortless aura of privilege about him-something that reminded her just how different their backgrounds were. Olivia went on, "It's not that I think I'm inferior. Quite the opposite. I believe in myself. I know I can build the life I want through hard work.

I don't need a relationship to climb the social ladder." Clara couldn't help but smile. Olivia really was refreshingly clear-headed. Her respect for her friend grew even more. The two chatted happily, growing more and more in ---- sync, almost like kindred spirits. "Let's celebrate that!" Olivia said suddenly. "Come on, one drink!" She stood up and headed off to grab some wine. Not long after, the sound of high heels clicked against the stone path. Clara turned, expecting Olivia, but it was Brooklyn instead.

"Clara, you really lucked out," Brooklyn said from across the pool, looking down at her with a smug tilt to her chin. Clara blinked, unsure what she meant. Brooklyn gave a half-smile. "Picked up someone's leftovers." Leftovers? Oh. She meant Aaron. Clara rose slowly, smiling faintly. "Funny. Why not say he's the lucky one instead?" Brooklyn scoffed. "Being Mrs. Aaron Devereaux isn't exactly easy, is it?" She turned to leave, throwing back over her shoulder, "I'll just wait and see how long you last." Clara burst out laughing. ---- "Sure thing," she called after her.

"I'll let you know when I decide I'm done being Mrs. Devereaux." Anyone could throw sharp words. Clara could too. Brooklyn stalked off, but after two steps, her heel slipped. She let out a startled scream and landed squarely on the ground. Clara froze. "Brooklyn, are you okay?" She started forward to help her up, but two other girls hurried over first. "Brooklyn, what happened?" "Did you twist your ankle?" They guided her to a nearby lounge chair. Brooklyn pressed a hand to her ankle, grimacing. "I don't know... someone pushed me from behind.

I lost my balance." Both girls turned toward Clara instantly. There had been only two people here: Clara and Brooklyn. Clara stared back, speechless. "Ow, it really hurts," Brooklyn gasped softly. One of the girls said, "I'l go get the staff to bring a ---- first-aid kit." Just then, Logan and Aaron came up from the basement, laughing-until they saw the little scene by the pool. "Wait, what happened? Who got hurt?" Logan asked.
