---- Chapter 103: Cover Each Other For Life The New Year was just around the corner, and the streets were decked out with festive lights, buzzing with that holiday vibe. Scarlett was running on fumes. She had been out the door before dawn, bounced between two events back-to-back, and by the time she stumbled home at seven, she collapsed onto the bed and instantly knocked out. Maybe it was the pregnancy. Or maybe it was just in her head. Either way, she had been ridiculously sleepy lately. She could fall asleep anywhere-the car, the makeup room, you name it.
It was like she had an on-off switch for naps. In the middle of her hazy sleep, the buzz of her phone startled her awake. Without opening her eyes, Scarlett reached out, killed the vibration, and sank right back under. Ten seconds later, panic hit her like a slap. Damn it! Derek had said he'd come at nine. ---- She groped for her phone and lit up the screen. Ten o'clock. Her WhatsApp was full of unread messages, plus more than a dozen missed calls. The latest one had come just two minutes ago. That sobered her right up. She flung off the covers, rushed to the door, and yanked it open.

And there he was. Derek leaned against the hallway wall, arms crossed, his expression dark as night. His eyes locked on her like lasers. "Why did you change the door code? And why the hell weren't you answering?" Scarlett winced, guilt written all over her face. "I'm sorry! I was out cold. Come in, come in." She grabbed his hand with a sheepish smile, tugging him inside. "I changed the code on a whim the other day. Forgot to tell you-too much going on." Derek's jaw tightened. "I even called your assistant. She didn't know either. What the hell, Scarlett?" "I screwed up, okay?
Won't happen again." She pulled him down onto the couch, slipped behind him, and started kneading his shoulders like she was trying to charm her way out of trouble. Oversleeping was her fault, and her assistant hadn't dared to give out the password without her say-so. ---- "Still mad?" she asked softly. Derek grumbled, "I thought something happened to you. Scarlett leaned over, kissed him, and smiled. "It won't happen again. So-what did you bring me?" She opened the insulated bag he carried. "Seafood porridge," Derek announced. "Your favorite." "Perfect!
I haven't even had dinner yet." Scarlett's grin was bright as she twisted the lid open. The smell of shrimp and crab hit her nose-and her stomach lurched violently. Clapping a hand over her mouth, she sprinted to the bathroom and dropped to her knees at the toilet. She had only had a bow! of soup at lunch. With nothing in her stomach, all she could do was retch and gag until tears slid from the corners of her eyes. Derek scrambled like a man on fire. He rubbed her back, shoved tissues into her hands, poured water, hovering helplessly. After five brutal minutes, she finally stopped heaving.
Scarlett rinsed her mouth several times, sipped some water, and forced the nausea down. ---- She knew it was coming. She had read about it-morning sickness usually struck in the first trimester. Until now she'd been fine. But apparently, her luck had just run out. Derek supported her back to the couch. Scarlett pointed weakly at the food container. "Get rid of it. 1 forgot-the doctor said no seafood. Stomach's inflamed." Derek didn't question her. He carried the food into the kitchen. "Then what do you want? I'll order something else." Scarlett clutched her water glass and shook her head.
"Don't want anything." She was terrified of putting anything down only to throw it back up again. "That's no good." Derek frowned. "How about oatmeal? I'll cook it. Cabinet on top, right?" "Yeah, it's up there." Scarlett leaned into the couch cushions. He sat back down beside her, studying her pale face. Her lips were colorless, lashes damp, her eyes dulled. His frustration drained away. "You saw a doctor? Did they give you medicine? How long has this been going on?"
