Chapter 523 +25 Bonus Chapter 523 Amelia's POV I knew this wolf. Victoria, Damien's younger sister who had taken part in the plot to kill me all those years ago at the Alpha ball. That was the night my wolf emerged, Amy was born, and I had lost my memory. She was one of the people responsible for the worst night of my life, and the loss of six years I could have spent loving and knowing my children. But. She and Ethan were also the only ones who had faced justice for that, being exiled and becoming rogues. That alone stilled my jaws, ready to snap. At least, at first.
When Amy stepped between us, ready to protect Victoria, everything changed. "She helped us, Mom." "Amy's right," Stacy said, coming to stand beside her sister. "Aunt Victoria isn't a bad guy. And neither are Philip and Paulina. I don't care what the teacher said." Philip and Paulina? I glanced past my children. Repressing the violent urge to jump in front of them, to protect their backs from this known traitor, I allowed myself to see what was happening here. Four pressed down patches in the grass. A basket of harmless wild berries.
Victoria, with two small children behind her, both the spitting image of Ethan. Things started to piece together, and I could tell at once... yes. These children and their mother were not a threat to my own. If anything, my children had startled them, and Victoria had shared her berries. That didn't mean Victoria wasn't cooking up some kind of betrayal against them. My children would make wonderful kidnap targets, especially when they wandered alone past the border and right into her lap. But that plot hadn't seemed to happen yet. Slowly, I shifted to my human form.
My kids immediately relaxed and ran to me for hugs. Victoria watched me for a moment, but then too, shifted to her human form. Still, she kept her children behind her. "You are in rogue territory," she told me. "I had to find my kids," I replied. Victoria seemed confused. "You would follow them here? Into danger?" "There is nothing I wouldn't do for my children." The confusion in Victoria's face eased away, and in its place, she almost looked... impressed. "Funny," she said.
"I always thought you were a wimp." 1/4 Maybe I had been once, when I had thought I was a lone human in a hostile werewolf world. But no longer. It wasn't just the presence of my wolf that changed me. Having children did. I was stronger, braver, and bolder now. For them. Victoria seemed like she had more to say, but at just that moment, we both sensed another wolf approaching. A rogue wolf. I braced myself for a potential fight. Instead, Victoria said at once, "Get behind those trees and that brush. Stay low. Stay hidden." There wasn't time to think or argue.

I grabbed my two pups by the back of the necks and led them to the shadow of the brush Victoria had pointed out. I held them close as we crouched low, hiding. Yet even as I hid, I suspected Victoria would betray us. I was prepared for anything. I would fight for my children to the death, if necessary. Inside, I tried to keep myself calm, however. Any sense of urgency, Damien would feel through the bond and come running. He had to stay on his side of the border. His presence would only make things worse. Victoria stood up straight.
She gave stern looks to her own children, before they all turned to greet the approaching wolf. The wolf shifted into a man I had never seen before. He looked at Victoria and the kids and then glanced around. "You need to return to the safety of the town. We've heard reports of a pack wolf crossing the border." I braced myself for Victoria's response. She didn't even glance in our direction. Instead, coolly, she replied, "Are you sure it's not a wolf in exile? You know my brother likes to exile people." "Our spies reported no exiles today," the man said.
"More likely this is a spy for the pack wolves, hoping to get a drop on us." He looked at Victoria again. "You know they can't be trusted." "I know." "Look what they did to you," he said, more pointedly. "I know," Victoria replied with some annoyance. The man made a humph kind of noise as he glanced around again. "Did you see anything strange while you were out here?" Victoria paused like she was thinking. "We heard some rustling to the south a while ago, but I assumed it was an animal." "I'll check it out. Those pack wolves are brazen.
They might try anything." He looked back to Victoria once more. "Get those pups back to town." Then, without another word, he shifted once more and took off to the south as Victoria had indicated. The south sent them away from us and the way we had come. Victoria and her kids didn't move an inch for several long moments, but once the rogue wolf was far enough 2/4 Chapter 523 25 Bonus away, they all looked at us. "Go," said the boy. "Go home," said the girl, waving a little. "Get back across the border and stay there," Victoria said.
As the girls and I emerged from our hiding spot, I was at a loss for words. Victoria could have given us up but she hadn't. "Thank you," I told her, wishing there was more I could do, to return the favor. But time was of the essence, and there wasn't time to discuss it. With a quick nod goodbye, I turned the girls toward the border and we hurried toward it. Victoria and her kids stayed behind. The girls were quiet and tensely obedient as we made our way through the forest. As they couldn't shift yet, I stayed human too, trusting my inner wolf to guide us.
If danger came, I knew I could shift in a flash to protect the children. For their sake, I held off for now, not wanting to scare them. It took some time, the world getting darker as night was setting in, but soon we reached the border. I could see my parents, worriedly huddled together, and Damien, pacing. "Daddy!" Amy called, and together the girls rushed forward. Damien still at once. Relief flooded his face as he dropped down to one knee just in time to collect the girls who had collided into him. I approached slower, greeting my parents first, while the girls reunited with their father.
I needed this moment to myself, to allow my adrenaline to drop. My girls were safe, and so was I. We had survived. We were home. Damien looked over at me and stretched his arm out, inviting me into the family hug. I was relaxed enough now that I went there at once. I held both the girls as Damien wrapped his arms around all of us, holding us together as a family. I closed my eyes, finding comfort in this moment. There would be discussions later, and likely some discipline for the girls sneaking out. But right now, we were safe and whole, and that was all that mattered.
As we started to separate, Damien asked me, "What happened?" I replied, "We met your sister." 3/4 Joseph King
