Chapter 449 +25 Bonus Chapter 449 Amelia's POV I heard what my mother said but I just couldn't process it. What could she possibly mean by that? There simply could be no way that was true. "Mom, what are you talking about?" I asked. It was Dad who answered for her, when Mom started to break down crying again. "Years ago, we took in a servant who was pregnant and alone." "We didn't," Mom corrected "I did." "And I always loved your kind heart," Dad replied. "If I didn't agree with the decision, I would have stopped it from happening." Mom looked down but didn't reply.
I waited for Dad to continue. "That woman stayed a servant in our house for many years, up until recently," Dad said. Clearing his throat, he looked at me. "We believe she was a traitor. We suspect that she was the one who switched you and Sienna at birth. And now we also believe she was the one who helped break Claire and Sienna out of jail." Mom sobbed even harder. "You have proof of this?" I asked Dad. "It's not concrete, but there's enough for us to believe it. If we are correct, this servant also has deep ties with the rogues.' >> "You are in so much danger," Mom said.
"It's all my fault. If I had just turned her away... >> I blinked a few times, trying to properly comprehend. "Does Damien know about this?" I was already reaching for my phone. Information like this could be very useful for his hunt. "Yes," Dad said. "Jake told him a couple of days ago." At once, I lowered my phone back down to my side. More than the news that my parents had delivered, hearing that Damien already knew about it made me feel hollow inside. He hadn't thought to tell me. The new distance between us seemed to stretch even farther.
More than just a canyon, this was an entire galaxy between us. A marriage was supposed to be a team, but he was once again keeping me in the dark about everything. Was this why he hadn't been home? Was this why the number of guards on the property seemed to double since his absence? Did he really think if he sat down and explained to me what was happening that I wouldn't understand? "I can't believe Damien didn't tell me," I muttered aloud. 1/3 "He was likely trying to protect you," Dad said.

"Rogues are unpredictable and dangerous, and the less you have to worry about them the better." "But he's worrying about them," I said. "What kind of Luna am I if I can't help him carry the burden of this?" "You are a Luna that he loves very much," Mom said. I shook my head. That wasn't good enough. It was clear he still saw me as a liability, not as a partner. And at this point, I wasn't sure what I could even say to him that would help make a difference. "Keeping me confined in this house is not a good method of protection," I said.
"I hate to admit this, but it's only building resentment and putting a strain on us. With the way things are going, I'm not sure how we are going to fix this. It doesn't seem like he is even trying." "I'm sure he will want to fix things," Dad said. "When the danger is passed." "What if it's too late by then?" I asked. He didn't have an answer, at least not for that question. After a moment, he patted my knee and said, "Your mother and I will always be on your side, no matter what." After, we all sat there quietly then, burdened with our own heavy thoughts.
After a moment, I pulled myself out of them to look at Mom. She was the picture of absolute misery, her eyes red from crying, her shoulders slouched, her lips pulled down in a weighty frown. I could see how she blamed herself for this, for inviting this rogue traitor into our lives. This person had made everything so much worse. If I hadn't been switched with Sienna, how much heartache could have been avoided? Yet... I wasn't ashamed of the person I was or the hardships I had overcome. Yes, I was missing a big chunk of my memory, and things had been difficult in the human realm.
But all of my challenges helped make me the person I am today. I couldn't resent that, even if my mind did naturally want to wander, what if? That kind of thinking wasn't good for anything. What happened, happened, and we were all here now, working together to try to be a family, to be happy and safe. I wasn't going to be bitter. I wasn't going to push away my mother after only finding her. What would be the use in that? Besides, I could never be mad at her for having a kind heart, even if it did end up hurting us.
Leaning forward, I wrapped my arms around Mom's shoulders and pulled her into a tight hug. I knew the words she needed to hear, what would make this better. I also knew that only I could say them to her. "I forgive you," I told her. At once, she reached around me, holding onto my back as tightly as I was holding hers. She cried more now, but 2/3 they were a different sort of tears. These were tears of relief. Mom and I held each other until she stopped shaking. Then as we pulled apart, she lifted her hands and cupped my cheeks. "My darling girl," she said, pride shining brightly in her eyes.
Without the last six years of my memory, I felt like my relationship with my mom had been stolen from me. Yet now, seeing her obvious affection for me, I felt that hole in my heart start to fill. We didn't have to say anything more. It was as simple as a smile to reinforce the restored mother-daughter connection between us. As we were smiling, the girls finished their work and came barreling into the room. "Grandma! Grandpa!" The girls were excited to see their grandparents, and no longer burdened by the weight of their guilt, my parents were just as excited to see their grandchildren.
For a time, I was able to put aside my anger and hurt toward Damien to focus on the joy and love I felt with the rest of my family. But in the still of the night, as I reached out to his side of the bed and found the sheets cold, that resentment returned. After another couple of days, the day of Benedict's visit arrived. I still hadn't seen Damien, and our phone conversations had been reduced to one or two words before he claimed to be busy. It was difficult not to feel rejected with how quickly he hung up the phone.
My parents were already dressed and ready to go to the event hall, but I was taking my time. What was the point of even putting in the effort if Damien never came home? Maybe he expected me to sit the event out too. "I'm sure he'll be here soon," Mom said, but I wasn't so sure. With the strain that had been building between us, I was learning not to expect anything from my mate but harsh rules and disappointment. It was then, at that very moment, that Damien finally walked through the front door. D Comments Support Share 3/3 Joseph King
