Chapter 411 "Chocolate cake?" Amy asked. "Yes," I said. "That sound perfect." "With chocolate frosting!" Stacy added excitedly. "Yes," I agreed. "We should get started." "I want to wash my hands first," Stacy said. "I have to use the bathroom," Amy said. I gave them both looks. "You don't want to help?" "We'll help," Amy said. "In a minute." I felt that they were up to something, but I didn't know what. More secrets, then. Biting back a sigh, I pushed myself off the couch. "Well, when you are ready, join me in the kitchen." "Okay," they both said as I walked away, confused.

Amy's POV As soon as Mommy was out of the living room, I turned to Stacy. "Mommy won't let Claire take you," I said. "I know," Stacy said like she was annoyed I would even think of it. "But who is going to protect Mommy? Daddy's not here." "There's all these guards," I pointed out. Stacy shook her head. "It's not enough. You know how Claire is. She's terrible. She'll still try something. She won't listen if we say no. Even if the guards say no, she won't listen." I nodded, accepting her words. She was right, after all. Claire was the worst. "It's up to us to protect Mommy, then," I said.

"We can get our baseball bats and hide them behind the couch. Then if Claire comes in, we stop her, no matter what!" Stacy blinked, looking at me with surprise. "That's not like your usual ideas." I knew what she meant. I liked thinking and planning and talking things out. Jumping straight into action was more Stacy's typical plan. But with Mommy potentially in trouble, there wouldn't be time to talk. And I wasn't so sure Claire wouldn't go after Stacy then too. I had to do whatever I could to keep both my mom and my sister safe. That meant baseball bats.

"Something wrong with that?" I asked her. 1/2 "I didn't say that," Stacy replied. "I'm just surprised, that's all." "Well, don't be. We are going to protect Mommy, and that's that." Stacy held out her hand. "Agreed?" "Agreed," I said, and shook her hand. We rushed upstairs, got our bats, and then hid them under the couch. As we did so, we talked about other things we could do, and even came up with a kind of schedule for at least one of us to keep an eye on Mom as much as we could. We would take turns going to the bathroom and finding other ways to sneak away from out tutor.

No matter what, Mommy wouldn't be facing this alone. Later, after the cake and dinner and some board games Mom insisted we play, she went with us upstairs and tucked us into bed. As soon as we heard her footsteps go back down the stairs, Stacy and I went back into the hallway. We were both in our pajamas now. I had my tennis racket, ready to strike. Stacy had a baseball. "What can you do with that?" I asked. "Throw it," she said and made the motion. "Then what?" I asked. She shrugged. I didn't want to argue and risk alerting Mom to our plans, so I let it go for now.

Together, we went quietly down the stairs. When we reached the bottom, we peeked around the corner. From here we could see into the living room. Mommy was resting on the couch, her eyes on the clock. Stacy and I stayed awake, occasionally watching her. We could see the clock too. It soon became 11. And then midnight. Around 1, Stacy fell asleep, curled up on the stairs. I tried to stay awake longer, but by 2, my eyes were too heavy to stay open. With my last bit of energy, I looked at saw the worry on Mom's face as she watched the clock. Then I fell asleep.
