Chapter 381 Amelia's POV +25 Bonus When the girls and I arrived home, without their father, I put the exhausted children to bed and then stayed up waiting for Damien. I kept looking out the window, reliving the night's events. I didn't think I could find sleep tonight even if I wanted to, with the weight of everything so heavily on my shoulders like it was. And I didn't mean as the pack Luna. I meant as a mother. That little boy might have become the victim, but if the cake had been poisoned, that meant the intended targets had been one or both of my children.
I just couldn't understand it, and it made me so terribly sad. Who would want to hurt children? I struggled to even conceive of it. The clock struck two am before Damien came in through the front door. I was still standing at the window, so it took no effort for me to meet him in the foyer. When he saw me, after closing and locking the door behind him, he came to me, pulled me into his arms, and held me tightly. For a moment, I accepted the warmth and comfort of his embrace.

Then, still with his arms around me, I asked him, "What happened?" "One of the servants was seen to have taken a vial from Claire. This same servant was the one who delivered the cake to the girls. When Jake and I went to confront Claire, we found that she had made a run for it. We chased her and found her in the forest, up in Jake's pack lands. He took her into custody and she is there now." He inhaled and exhaled deeply. "It's finally over. She's in custody." I had some memories of Claire from six years ago, but in none of them had she ever been as vile as she had been tonight.
What could have snapped inside of her that would make her act this way? "I don't understand," I said to Damien. "Why would she ever do something so evil as to poison children?" Damien's POV Amelia didn't know the half of it, and more, she didn't know the worst part. Claire hadn't just tried to poison any child, the poisoned had gone to Claire's own child Stacy. I couldn't tell her that though. It was so much simpler for Amelia to just assume Amy and Stacy were both her own. After all, she was their mother regardless of blood.
But, though I couldn't explain Stacy's heritage, and didn't want to traumatize Amelia with some of the other terrible things that Claire had done, I could at least fill her in on some of the vaguer offenses. "Claire always coveted the role of Luna for herself, and has been willing to do anything to get it. This isn't the first time that she tried to... sabotage you in her efforts to displace you." Amelia deflated slightly, slumping against me. "So it's my fault." 1/2 Chapter 391 +25 Bonus "Absolutely not," I said at once.
"Claire has issues, and those are not your responsibility." "It's because she hates me that our children were in danger, and that the little boy was poisoned." I grabbed Amelia by the shoulders and gently pulled her back away from me. Looking her in the eye, I wanted her to see my sincerity and my conviction as I told her, "None of this is your fault." I didn't know if she believed me. She didn't say anything more one way or the other. She did nod, but it felt kind of passive, like she understood what I was saying but wasn't quite ready to accept that. I could understand this.
It was so much easier to say things aloud. But to accept them? To feel them deep down in your heart? That was much more difficult. P Comments Support Share 2/2 Joseph King
