Chapter 234 Jake's POV When the phone rang the next morning, I wasn't sure who to expect, I simply had a feeling that it was going to be a bad day. I'd had that feeling a lot lately, and while it only sometimes culminated into actual bad days, every day felt like it was building up to something awful. But that could have just been my own guilt weighing me down. I never would have thought that I'd have to keep so many secrets from my own sister. Every day, the number of those secrets and lies increased and the risks that I would stop being able to hold everything together grew exponentially.

I was building a house of cards, and all it would take was a light breeze to knock it down. Or Damien. I had to do everything in my power to continue to keep Amelia and Damien apart. That they had already met was trouble enough, but if they continued to meet... if they talked... Gods. I couldn't let that happen. I picked up the phone and brought it to my ear. "This is Alpha Jake." "Alpha, this is Ian." "Ian!" my mood changed at once. Ian and Amelia had gone out last night, and though she didn't tell any of us about it, I was hopeful they had a nice time.

My goal, of course, was that she spent so much time with Ian that she forgot all about that brief encounter with Damien. That couldn't be too difficult right? She only saw Damien for a minute, while Ian was a perfect suitor, a perfect gentleman. Why would she think of anyone but him? How could the date go any way but perfectly? "Tell me good news," I said. "I can't," Ian replied. At once, my hopes and dreams for Amelia's future crashed and burned right before my eyes. "What are you talking about?" I asked.

"I don't think I can continue to romantically pursue Annette." "Why not?" I asked, annoyed now on my sister's behalf. Who did this guy think he was, rejecting my sister? Wasn't she good enough for him? Well, news flash. She was better than him. He was just the best candidate I could find at the time. Better than Damien, certainly. But still not as good as my sister. "Don't misunderstand," Ian said. "I would love to continue to date your sister. But the issue is her feelings. Or lack of them, I should say. She simply doesn't feel anything for me.

Honestly, I'm not sure she even wants to continue our friendship." Oh. As my anger cooled, I tried to take in what he was saying. 1/2 "Surely you are being too sensitive, Ian," I said. "You know she's been through a lot. She has a lot of love to give, she's just scared." "I want to believe that, Alpha," Ian said. "But she's given me no signs that she wants to continue seeing me. I'm not even sure she likes me at all. Not even as a person." "Now, you are definitely being ridiculous." I was going to have to talk to Amelia about this, but first, I needed to find a way to keep Ian from giving up.

A simple date suggestion wasn't going to cut it this time. Movies, the theater, dinner... None of this would be enough. If I want to lan to stay in the picture, we had to make a grander gesture of Amelia's interest and affection for him. Something big. Like a party were a bunch of other people would be, where Ian and Amelia could show themselves off together as a couple. Yet, the only gala that was coming up was the Alpha Ball. The same event where, six years ago, Amelia had nearly been killed and all of this had begun.

I wasn't eager to put her in that position again, even though I planned to attend with my parents and Sienna. But, this was the perfect opportunity for Ian and Amelia to take their relationship to the next level. Or, I should say, any level at all. 2/2 Joseph King
