Chapter 205 Damien's POV After delivering word of my judgment, I called my enforcers to ensure the punishments were to be carried through. Ethan and Victoria had until the morning to disappear. Victoria had never really been on her own before, which was why I had told Ethan to look out for her. He had been an honorable man up until his involvement in this. I hoped that would extend to the here and now, and he would do as I asked. Claire was under strict house arrest now, with an enforcer posted at her door. Once her baby was born, her life would be forfeit.
I'd already exiled her once, but she continued to plot. I had no doubts, from even before the messages, that she was the one who had arranged all of this. The messages just proved it. She was a smart woman. She could have used that intelligence and cunning for anything she wanted. Instead, she used it against me. Against Amelia. Now she would get what she deserved for such cruelty. After leaving Claire's, I returned to my own estate and called Jake. "I have the evidence, and have doled out punishments," I told him when he answered. "When is the funeral?" "Tomorrow," Jake told me.
They hadn't been wasting any time, so I was glad I hadn't either. "I will be there," I said. "I will bring the evidence with me." "Good," Jake said and hung up. I hung up too, not at all offended by the lack of goodbye. There was no need for pleasantries in matters like this. Later that evening, as I was setting out my black suit so it would be prepared for the ceremony tomorrow, I was told by my staff that my mother was here, waiting for me in the sitting room. I had anticipated this. She wasn't going to understand why I would exile her only daughter.
That was why I left a copy of the messages downstairs. Hopefully, she was reading it now. With a sigh, I left my room and headed down to meet her. She was looking at the top page of the printouts when I entered the room, but whether she was reading it or just glaring at it, I wasn't sure. She probably hoped she could blink it out of existence, but that wouldn't change what Victoria had done. When I came into the room, she immediately walked toward me. "You can't do this to your sister, Damien." "She had a part to play in the murder of my wife, mother." "A small part," Mother said.

"I'm sure she got caught up in it all. She didn't mean it." "Amelia was murdered," I said, feeling like I had to remind her of the severity of the crime. This wasn't something petty, the result of peer pressure. Victoria had played a part in the premeditated murder of my mate. "She was just a human," Mother said sharply. "Why does her life matter more than my daughters? A werewolf is more important!" 1/3 +25 Bonus I stood silently a moment, seething. While the numbness was still strong, my fury over her words was stronger, enough for me to feel the swell of rage even through my present fog.
"You need to leave my house now," I said. "But, Damien -" "If you ever talk about Amelia like that again, like she didn't matter, you will join Victoria and Ethan in exile," I said, growling. She was taken aback, placing her hand to her heart. "I'm your mother..." she said, but the fight had left her. "Amelia was my mate, and she was taken from me," I said. "Now, get out." Mother's face went red with constrained anger. But, blessedly, she didn't voice anymore opinions. Instead, she finally listened to me, and walked out of the house.
Jake's POV The day of the funeral, I spoke with Cara in my office. "Don't make her feel like a prisoner," I said. "But keep an eye on her. Don't let her out of your sight. We can't let her stumble upon what we are doing." "I understand," Cara said and went back to observing her charge. Cara was determined to prove herself. She felt responsible for losing Amelia, who then was attacked. None of us really knew what happened, why Amelia would sneak out to her own doom, and she wasn't able to tell us. But my parents and I didn't blame Cara. Amelia wouldn't want her to blame herself.
Yet, this desire to prove herself meant that Cara was giving even more to her duties than usual, and with as overprotective as I had been feeling lately, I was pleased for it. We'd already told Amelia that we had a work-related function to attend - what was one more lie? leave in our formal best with only a goodbye. - so she let us Then, my parents, Sienna, and I headed out to the local church of the Moon Goddess where the funeral was about to begin. "Have you heard again from Damien?" Dad asked me in the car. "No. But he said he had evidence. So I'm sure he'll be here," I said.
Sienna shifted uncomfortably in her seat. "Evidence of what?" "As a condition for Damien to attend this funeral," Mom said, "Damien has to provide evidence of who the true culprits behind Amelia's attack are." "Oh..." Sienna said, then glanced to the side. Looking out the window, her face was hidden from the rest of us. "If he even shows up," Dad said. "He'll be there," Mom replied, and I thought so too, but I didn't say so. Mom looked at me. "If Damien is not responsible for what happened to Amelia, are we still doing the right thing, allowing him to believe she has died?
And our lies to her... And Amy..." I could understand her hesitation. If Damien was truly not responsible for what happened to Amelia, then keeping 2/3 him in the dark about Amelia and Amy could be cruel. But... "Don't forget the harm he did even before this," I reminded her. "Amelia was only with us at all because she was escaping Damien. We have the chance here to give Amelia a new life, a fresh start without Damien. Why would we deny her that chance at actual happiness?" "Is it our place to try to change her past?" Dad asked. "It has to be," I said.
I was too committed to this idea, to saving Amelia, to back out now. "We are her family. We have to take care of her and watch out for her." A silence fell over my family and me. But then, Mom asked, "What about Amy?" For that, I didn't have an answer. I only knew that I couldn't let Amelia meet Amy or it could ruin everything. What that meant for my niece's future, I wasn't sure. Perhaps we could find a foster family for her, as Mom had earlier suggested. That was a decision for another day though. For today, we already had a funeral. "Let's focus on today for now," I said.
"One day at a time." Mom pursed her lips, seemingly displeased. "Soon, you will have to make a choice for the sake of that child, Jake. I only hope you make the right one." COIN BUNDLE: get more free bonus Comments Support Share GET IT 3/3 Joseph King
