Chapter 461 Claire's POV Even as the van continued forward, Sienna driving us at full speed, and Jake was nothing but a spec in the distance, and soon not even that, Ian and I continued to stare at Ruth. I was in utter disbelief over what she had just done. I knew, from her being able to brew those potions that she was a witch, but... to see such a startling example of it in real time just blew my mind. She had done something to that knife. It wasn't even silver yet it had still been enough to take Jake down like he was human and not an Alpha werewolf.
I'd never seen anything like that, and I hadn't even known it was possible. Ruth barely even glanced at us as she turned back around, facing the front of the van. She smoothly moved to the passenger seat and buckled herself in. From there, she gave Sienna directions. We all knew she was leading us into rogue territory. None of us said a word. When the road smoothed out, less bumpy now, Ian moved to the end of the bench seat, reached out, grabbed the handle of the back door and slammed it closed. We all ignored the blood on the floor of the van. We traveled for a time.

I didn't have my phone or a watch but it was a few hours at least. The sun was set by now and we were mostly traveling in the dark. "There will be a roadblock up ahead," Ruth said, directing Sienna. "Keep that pedal down and do not let up. Don't swerve. Just barrel straight through." "Okay," Sienna said but she sounded nervous. Ian and I looked for places to hold on in the back. There were handles along the walls of the van. He took one side and I took the other. We both held on for dear life.
I wasn't looking out the front window, but I could still tell when we reached the roadblock and the border from the shouting and the honking of horns. Sienna did as Ruth commanded. The van pushed forward. Shouting grew louder. Then the van pushed through a fence, smacking against the front of the bumper. There was thudding under the tires. We definitely ran over something. "Keep going," Ruth directed. Sienna obeyed. Soon, the shouts grew distant. The van pressed on, even as the lights dimmed and there didn't seem to be any road now, from the way the van was bouncing around.
Until, suddenly, when a shot fired straight through the windshield and pierced into the roof of the van. "Stop," Ruth said, but Sienna didn't need the direction this time. She slammed on the brakes, bringing the van to a harsh stop. 1/2 We all froze for a moment, before a voice from outside called out, "Get out of the van!" Sienna and Ruth unbuckled their seatbelts. "Let me do the talking," Ruth said as she opened her door. Sienna got out too, on the driver's side. Ian and I both hopped out the back then moved to stand beside them at the front of the van.
I could see now that it was in bad shape. There were bits of fence stuck in the bumper. Around us were a handful of armed men. It was dark but I could still vaguely see them. I didn't recognize any of them. One shined a flashlight in our faces one by one as he went down the line. "Who are you?" this one asked. "What are you doing here?" "The red rose has many thorns," Ruth said. I looked at her, thinking she might have just lost her mind. She was definitely going to get us killed for sure. Instead, the man with the flashlight put it back in her face. She didn't even wince.
"Say that again," he commanded. "The red rose has many thorns," she said again, as clearly as before. 日 Comments Support Share 2/2 +25 Bonus Joseph King
