Chapter 174 Jake's POV "This shouldn't be happening," Dr. Wyatt said. "I triple checked the labels on the injections. They should not be causing her any pain, let along subjecting her to this!" "Show me," I said, at my wit's end. I didn't want to doubt the doctor. As far as I could tell, she had been the only one who had been kind to Amelia during her time in Damien's pack, and Amelia seemed to trust her. But the facts spoke for themselves. Amelia was here, potentially fighting for her life, and I was going to figure out why. If Dr.
Wyatt was hurting her in some way, it was up to me, as Amelia's sworn protector to discover that and make sure it would not happen anymore. Ever again. No matter what that meant I had to do to stop her. "This way," Dr. Wyatt said and led me back to the examination room she had used with Amelia. She had mostly cleaned the room up, but now, grabbed her medical bag and upended it all over the medical bed. Together, we combed through the things, until Dr. Wyatt grabbed the bottle she had used and showed me. I read the label, and it seemed to be what Dr. Wyatt had said it was.
Yet, I knew I had to look for something more. Obviously something was wrong with this. "The vial was sealed before I pieced the top with the needle," she said. "I made sure to get new vials to ensure they hadn't been tampered with like what I suspect happened last time." I uncapped the bottle and saw what she was talking about. The vial had a single pinprick at the top. As I returned the cap to the bottle though, I noticed something slightly off about the vial itself. Well, no. Not the vial. The label. It seemed loose on one corner.
If the sticker had been placed straight on the vial, shouldn't it be down flat? Yet here, it seemed to have lost its stick. Gently, I gripped the edge and started to pull, revealing a much different label underneath. Dr. Wyatt's face paled as her eyes went wide in a reaction of shock so genuine that I didn't doubt it. At once, grabbed the vial from me and read the initial label. She cursed. "This is poison. We have to tell Eve!" she "Stay here," I told her and leaving the office, dashed down the hall to warn the doctors currently working to save Amelia's life.
I told them about the poison, spelling it just as I had read on the vial. By now, Eve had arrived. "I'll take care of it," Eve said, her face serious. She kicked me out of the room in the next instant, as a bunch of machinery and tubes came out. A look at Amelia's face made my heart drop. She looked so sick, so small. I would have done anything to save her from this moment. But all I could do right now was trust the doctors working to save her life, while I continued to work on how this happened. Turning away, I returned to Dr. Wyatt, who had buried her head in her hands.

"How could this happen?" she muttered to herself. "I don't understand." The truth was much clearer to me. "Someone is trying to kill Amelia and her child." She looked up at me, first in surprise, and then in sadness. "Gods, I think you are right. But who? Who would want to do that?" Who wouldn't, in Damien's pack? 1/3 The list seemed too long to begin to speculate. "Tell me everything," I said. "Did you leave the room for even a minute? And if you did, who was there when you returned?" "It's not just that," she said. "This poison... it's not something we carry in the hospital.
It's so dangerous, so potent, that even for research purposes, the only vials of it are held within the Alpha headquarters building, held under lock and key by only the most high ranking members of the pack." She hung her head. "Damien himself was waiting outside of the office where the vials were. He told me he wasn't able to come today... What if that's not the only reason he was there. What if..." Damien? Wanting to kill Amelia and their unborn daughter? I had no affection for Damien of any kind.
Even my mutual respect for him was strained, but after everything he had gone through to save Amelia in the capital, it felt like too big a turnaround for him to now want to try to kill her. But he was Alpha, so he had to be one of the few individuals with the keys. And if he was there, at the time and place to have opportunity to replace the vials... I wasn't sure of his motives, but I couldn't deny he was the most likely. Who else could have had access to that kind of poison? Amelia's POV When I blinked my eyes awake, they burned from the sudden onslaught of light.
Yet, as they slowly adjusted, I realized I was in a hospital bed. Unlike last time I'd found myself in similar circumstances, this one was at least familiar. "Amelia," Healer Eve said from beside me. "Welcome back. How are you feeling?" I tried to assess the pain I might have been feeling, but it was difficult. I felt a bit like I was in a haze. "I think I feel okay... But, I don't know..." "That's good," Eve said.
"We've given you a lot of painkillers to help with the pain." It took a moment for me to understand what she said, but the minute it sunk in, my hands went to my stomach and I shot upright. "My baby!" "Easy," Healer Eve said. With her hands on my shoulders, she slowly and gently pushed me back down onto the bed. "The baby is alright, and so are you." I tried to let those words wash over me, taking away some of the worry. Yet, even as the majority of the concern dissipated, I still looked at her with confusion. "I don't understand," I said. "What happened?
The injections..." "Were tampered with," Eve said, frowning. "Dr. Wyatt and Jake are looking into it now, but it has been discovered the injections were replaced with poison. Honestly, Amelia, it's a miracle you are alive. By all accounts, that should have been enough poison to kill any human." I should be dead? My hands pressed more urgently to my stomach. "Maybe my baby protected me." Eve seemed unconvinced but she didn't argue. "Rest," she said. "I'm certain Jake will be here soon. I'll let him know you've woken up. Dr. Wyatt is also still here." "Oh?
Did she decide to stay when I got sick?" I asked. 2/3 "More than that," Eve said. "After what happened, she's decided to leave Damien's pack. Jake has agreed to accept her here, so very soon, you will have your own doctor right here within our pack." That seemed like good news, but it was a huge change for Dr. Wyatt. I could understand being upset someone kept tampering with her supplies. More than anyone, I could understand how terrible that was. But... to leave the pack...? Eve must have seen the confusion on my face. "She couldn't stay there anymore," Eve said.
"Not when it seemed like Alpha Damien was the one who was responsible for your poisoning." My stomach dropped. ....Damien was? Comments Support Share 3/3 Bonus Joseph King
