Chapter 488 Chapter 488 Amy's POV There's something going on with Mom and Dad. I noticed the minute we got home, when Mom came straight to the door to greet us, but Dad was standing further back, halfway in the living room. Before, they would always stand together, even if they weren't touching or anything. They seemed like a couple, Today, they were standing like strangers. Also, there was something wrong with Dad's face. He was smiling, but it didn't really fit him well. It was almost like he was wearing some kind of mask. It was really weird and made me very uncomfortable.
I glanced at Stacy and could see realized it too. She didn't keep the thoughts locked up in her head as well as i did though, and immediately asked, "What's going on?" "What do you mean?" Mom asked. Her smile was too-tight too, but that wasn't what was most noticeable about her. Her eyes were red and glassy, like she had been crying and was on the breaking point of crying, again. Stacy frowned at her, then glanced at me. Stacy and I were pretty close, so we could often talk through our expressions and eye movements, speaking without saying a word aloud.
Right now, Stacy thought this was as strange as I did, but we both decided to keep things under wraps for now. We'd talk together when we were away from these weirdos. "Never mind," Stacy said. "I'm going upstairs," I said suddenly. "Me too," Stacy agreed. "Uh... okay..." Mom said. "Come back down in time for dinner," Dad said. Stacy and I ran up the stairs. She threw her backpack into her room and then came into mine to speak to me. "They are definitely breaking up," Stacy said as soon as she closed the door.
"You don't know that," I said, but I had felt the way the air felt different between the two of them. It was so stuffy. Even when they had been fighting before, the air was still warm and comfortable. "They are," Stacy said. "Did you see how they were standing? It was like a mile apart. And Dad's face was so weird." "Mom was crying," I said. "See! You did notice. This is how things are before parents break up." "How do you know?" I asked, a little annoyed. She was acting like an expert, but that was probably only because Tommy from school.

His parents just broke up, and he said they fought, but he didn't mention anything about the rest. "Tommy said so." 1/3 "He did not!" "He said enough for me to figure it out!" Stacy replied. "Mom and Dad told us they weren't breaking up," I said. "They wouldn't lie to us." "Maybe they weren't breaking up then. That seems to be way different now." "I don't care how it's different, they wouldn't lie!" I said, my voice raising. I didn't mean to shout really, but there were so many emotions rattling around in my head. The worst of them was fear.
It was so loud and scary that the only thing I could do to drown it out was be loud myself. "You don't know what you are talking about!" "Tommy said " she said, acting like she knew everything again. "Tommy is an idiot!" Stacy frowned at me, her face turning red. "You're an idiot!" "I am not!" "Are too!" "Am not!" "Are too!" "Take that back!" I shouted, tears welling in my own eyes. "Girls, what is this?" Dad said from outside the door. When he opened it, he approached us. Then, stepping between us, he broke our line of sight with each other to stop our shouting.
"Why are you fighting?" Stacy crossed her arms while her mouth clamped shut. She wasn't going to answer. I looked up at Dad, realizing I was going to have to ask on my own. I would ask, and Dad would answer. And Stacy would see. She would see that I was right. They hadn't lied before. "Are you and Mommy breaking up?" I asked. Dad's eyes went a little wide and his brows came together. Then he looked away from me. "It's not like that... I mean, that is... no." That was the least believable sentence I had ever heard in my life. Stacy didn't say the words, but her look said it all: I told you so.
Meanwhile, my own heart started to break and I cried. Amelia's POV Damien and I had to split the girls up to calm them down, but even when we did so, the girls were still mad at each other and at us. Neither would talk. Damien had arrived before me, and I asked him if anything was said. He didn't answer. Eventually, the girls went to sleep, and as I had no need to be around Damien anymore, I returned to my own 2/3 room - the guest room - and closed and locked the door.
While I loved my daughters dearly- and Stacy was my daughter still, whether by blood or no- I still needed to process my feelings, so I didn't mind having some time to myself. With the exception of my children, everyone I had grown to love had lied to me. Jake and my parents lied when they called me Annette and convinced me I had always lived with them. They didn't let me know that I had a past with Damien or children. Instead, I had to fumble around blindly, hurting myself and others in the process. Then I remembered, only to lose everything again. This time, it had been Damien who had lied.
He had said he wanted to protect me, but it was hard to see it like that now. Knowing everything that had transpired between us, I could only see it that he wanted to protect himself, to keep his past mistakes from me. He didn't trust me enough to give me the chance to keep loving him without the deception. And I might have. I loved him so much, even now, I ached with it. But how could I forgive? And what was I supposed to do now? I had to stay near my children. That was certain. And I wanted to help fight against the rogues, not just for Damien's pack but for Jake's too.
I was lied to in Jake's pack by almost everyone, but they had been kind to me too. So quickly I was accepted there, treated like I had always belonged. I'd never forget that. I was worried about Uncle Benedict now too. Yes, he and I certainly had some issues in the past, but we'd cleared those up. Now, I could see clearly that he was an aging man trying to hold onto power. Whether or not he could hold on, I wasn't sure, but I wanted to help him. That meant I had to stay here. "I will be here with you," my wolf whispered in my mind.
"Whatever you decide, I will protect you and our pups." "Thank you," I told her. What a comfort it was to have her back. I bet she would help with the training too. "I will lend you my strength." The rest of my life was a mess, but I could focus on my training for now. With my wolf's strength returned, maybe I could even be allowed to fight.
