Chapter 179 +25 Bonus Chapter 179 Jake's POV In my office, I opened an invitation for the upcoming Alpha Ball. This prestigious event was held every year, in a different pack each year, with only the kingdom's most elite in attendance. Alphas were typically expected to attend. Usually, I would. This year, however, the event was taking place in the very same pack where Sienna was supposed to be attending university. Whether she was or not, I was uncertain, after having seen her at the capital.

But, with how annoyed the Alpha King seemed with her toward the end, I imagined she went back there, even if she had left for a while. They were still taking my checks, so that had to mean something. Yet, running into Sienna wasn't the only reason I was hesitant about attending this year. For one thing, after what happened at the capital, I wasn't looking forward to being in a group setting again, particularly around the 'elite' that had been so eager to throw Damien, Amelia, and me into the dungeons the last time we'd all been together.

The other reason was in the fine print of the invitation, written there as if it was a direct message to me. No humans allowed at the Ball. If Amelia couldn't go, that pretty much clinched it for me. I wasn't going to leave her side while she was in such a state. She'd finally been released from the hospital and was back home, but Gods, she had been poisoned. Damien had tried to kill her. And I was just supposed to go to the Ball and rub elbows with him like he hadn't tried to destroy one of the most important people in my life. Assuming he was the one who had done it.

I still had some uncertainty, despite what Dr. Wyatt said. After what he'd done at the capital... and then how he had sounded on the phone when I'd accused him of it. That kind of shock seemed genuine. But I couldn't risk taking his word for it. If there was even a chance that he could be responsible for this, then I had to assume he was all the way responsible. Amelia's life, and that of her baby, were too important to play guessing games here. With all of these things in my mind, I took out a sheet of paper and began to write my refusal to attend.

Unfortunately, as I was composing, my father came into the room. He plucked the invitation off the table. "Time for the Alpha Ball again, is it?" Martin asked. "I swear it comes earlier every year. Have you let the Beta know?" "I'm not going this year," I said. "Why ever not?" "Read the fine print," I said without looking up from what I was writing. I regret to inform you that I, Alpha Jake, will not be attending this year's Alpha Ball... "This is an asshole move of them, but you still have to go," Martin said. "If she can't go, I can't go," I said.

"She doesn't need to attend every event with you," Martin said. 1/3 Finally, I looked up. "I'm not leaving her here. What if something happens? What if Damien shows up again? For her protection, she has to stay with me." I shook my head. "This Ball happens every single year. I don't need to attend this time." Martin sighed. "I hate to say this to you, son, but this year, you need to attend more so than any other." My pen stilled. "What are you talking about?

After what happened at the capital, no one should be expecting me." "It's precisely because of what happened at the capital that you need to go," Martin said. "Right now, our pack reputation is in the toilet. Though you have been cleared, for a time, you were accused of being a traitor to the king. If you refuse to show your face at the next event he will be in attendance at, you are only making things worse." "I don't care about my reputation so long as Amelia is safe," I said. "Well, I do," said Amelia from the hallway. Gods, how long had she been there?

I let myself get so distracted by Martin and the outrage of this invitation that had totally not thought to check for any eavesdroppers. I should have known better. Amelia had a habit of overhearing things, especially the things I truly did not want her to hear. "Don't worry about this," I told her. "You only need to focus on getting better." "I'm not a child, Jake," she said. "And I am getting better. Staying in my room all day isn't going to help with that. I need to rebuild my strength. I can't do that by never leaving my bed." "She won't be in any danger here," Martin said.

But I refused once more. "I'm not leaving her side." Amelia considered this. "Then let me come with you," she said. "That won't work," I said. "The invitation says no humans." "I don't mean to the Ball. I'll go with you and we'll see the sights during the day. When you have to go to the Alpha Ball, I'll just barricade myself in the hotel room. You can put in an appearance at the Ball, and then come right back," she said. I wasn't so sure. "Anything could happen while I'm gone." "Not in a public place. Not with Cara at the door, and you near enough to be there if we needed you," she pressed.

"I wouldn't be two packs over. I'd be in the same building. When you are done with your party, you just have to come back upstairs." I paused, unsure how to argue that. Martin gave me a knowing look, and I was cornered. I didn't like it, but having her near me was better than leaving her behind. And she was right. We would be in a public place. I could fill the hotel with all my guards, and I'd be close enough I could rush to her if she needed me. "You can't miss this event," she said, after glancing at my dad. "Fine," I said, not seeing how I had much choice.

Sienna's POV My Mom was really a trusting woman. Dad and Jake might have given me the cold shoulder, but Mom still called me from time to time to talk to me about things. This time she wanted me to know that she my dad and brother were all coming into town for the Alpha Ball. 2/3 She was hoping to meet up and spend time with me. I didn't care either way, honestly. They had all kicked me out of their lives. Even if Mom tried to be friendly, she didn't stop my dad and brother from making me leave. It was hard to forgive her for that. However, then she said something interesting.

"Amelia will be with us..." "I didn't think humans could attend the ball," I said. "Oh, she'll be staying at the hotel," Mom said. "Just during the event." So Amelia would be in the hotel room, likewise guarded but otherwise alone, for the length of the party. What a perfect opportunity for something to happen to her. Delighted, after hanging up with Mom, after agreeing to meet - sure, whatever - I called Claire. "You won't believe the news I have for you," I told her.
