Chapter 344 Jake's POV Mom and Dad were already having a hard time dealing with Sienna's treachery and her trial. I didn't want to tell them about Amelia, but I knew I had to. They would be even more upset to learn about it later and realize that I had kept it from them. I was already keeping too many secrets that could hurt someone I cared about. I didn't want to keep even more. Now, we were in a fast moving car across the border, taking us deep into Damien's pack lands, to his capital and the hospital within. The car was quiet inside, none of us saying a word, all lost in our own thoughts.

Dad had his arm around Mom's shoulder as she cried softly. I looked away from them and out the window, feeling like I had made a terrible mistake in ever letting Amelia out of my sight. As I didn't particularly trust Damien or the staff at his hospital, I had already made a call to Healer Eve. She was to meet us at the hospital, which was a relief. I would believe her word over anyone else's today, especially Damien's. I never should have let Amelia come here with him, but I had been backed into a corner at the time. Sienna was still on the loose, and Amelia needed a safe place to hide.

Why I ever thought Damien's pack would be safe, I didn't know. Since Sienna's traitorous acts, I had put the thought of breaking Amelia and Damien's mating bond out of my mind. But now, my thoughts went back there. Maybe it was something to consider, after all. If Amelia survived this, I would take her away and urge her to forget all about Damien. If that meant breaking their bond, then so be it. I sat, allowing my anger and rage to fester until the car finally pulled up in front of the hospital. Then, I jumped out, not waiting for my parents, and stormed inside.

"Jake!" Dad called after me, then cursed. I drowned out his voice. Inside the hospital, I spotted Damien and immediately rushed to him, ready to fight him. He squared up as he saw me approached. "I'm going to kill you," I growled. My father, who must have hustled after me, grabbed my shoulder and held me back. "This is no time or place to start a fight." "He deserves it," I growled. "That doesn't matter," Dad countered. "Annette is all that matters now.' Mom came into the room then, slower, with such a look of devastation on her face that I lost the will to fight and dropped my stance.

Damien dropped his too, and lowered his head. "I'm sorry. So much happened. Claire came over last night, surprising all of us, and then with the trial today. Annette wasn't feeling well. I never should have left her alone." "No, you shouldn't have," I snapped. "You couldn't have known how deeply she would be affected by all this," Mom said, softer. "That is our fault. We should have prepared you." 1/3 "Mom," I said harshly, suspecting she might be building up to say more than she should.

Her face was so distraught, I didn't think she was thinking clearly, too caught up in the potential loss of both her daughters. If she was thinking straight, she would know that telling Damien the truth right now was the worst thing we could do. We had kept the secret this long, we could continue to keep it. For the rest of all of our lives, preferably. Damien's POV I didn't know what Lillian was saying, mostly because, just at the very moment she started talking, I caught a gentle scent in the air. Strangely, it reminded me of Amelia. Had I too broken with reality?

Was I so stressed that I was remembering moments of the past? But... no... there was something familiar and yet different about the scent. It was Amelia's, but it was also more. And I didn't think I was imagining it. Sniffing the air, I followed the scent straight to the doors of the emergency room. Jake, noticing what I was doing, scented the air as well. His face paled slightly, and he quickly chased after me. He rushed to put himself in front of me, blocking my path into the back hallways. "Whatever you are thinking, forget it," Jake said.

I didn't have time to deal with him now, not with Amelia so close... Impossibly close! I shoved Jake to the side and pushed my way through the emergency room doors. Like a man possessed, I followed the scent, tracking it down the hallways until I finally stood outside of one of the doors. Through the window, I saw Annette, lying on the hospital bed, the healers around her working to save her life. It shouldn't be possible. Amelia was a human. She didn't have a wolf like Annette did. But I knew, without question, that this scent Amelia's, and it was coming from Annette. Annette.

How many times did I push my suspicions away, that Annette and Amelia were the same person? How much did I doubt my own instincts? My own draw to my fated mate? Amelia wasn't dead, she had just lost her memory. She had been so close to me all this time, and I had mourned her. Seeing her now, unconscious and fighting for her life, I curled my hand into a fist. My fear for her coupled with the pain of being deceived. I had been such a fool. How had I not seen? Just because she had a wolf... That was how Amelia survived!

Somehow, despite being from the human realm, she had a wolf that manifested in her time of need. 2/3 How many lies had been told to me? To her? A low growl escaped my throat. I could do nothing for Amelia now. Nothing but wait for her to wake up again and hope I could help her remember ine. In the meantime, I needed an outlet for my rage. And I knew just where to put it. Swiveling on my heel, I rushed back down the hallway to the waiting room, where Jake and his parents were. Jake was speaking quickly to his parents, but they all silenced as I came closer. "The truth," I growled.

"You're out of your mind," Jake replied. "Annette is Amelia," I said, tired of the lies. "Why would you keep that from me? Why would you allow me to believe that she's dead?" "You're wrong," Jake said, lying straight to my face once again. I shook my head. "I know that smell. I know my mate. You tried to hide her from me, but I found her. No more bullshit, Jake. Tell me the truth." Jake stubbornly shut his mouth. But his mother opened hers. "You're right. Annette is Amelia. They are one in the same." "Mom," Jake snapped. "I'm tired of the lies, Jake.

Maybe we thought we were keeping secrets for the right reasons, but all it's really done is hurt people. You wanted to protect her, but look where she is. We didn't protect anyone. Both of my children... lost...' As Lillian succumbed to her misery, crying again, Jake looked back to me. He opened his mouth, but I didn't give him time to speak. Instead, I punched him in the face.
