Chapter 340 Amy's POV +25 Bonu I chased after Stacy as she ran. The stairs up to our bedrooms were off the foyer so we couldn't go that way without being seen, which was something neither of us wanted. Instead, we ran back into the dining room and hid under the table. The tablecloth hung low over the sides so I felt somewhat safe here. While we hid, I held my hand out for Stacy and she took it. "I hate that she's here," Stacy said. "Why would she come here? She never comes here." I understood what she meant. Usually when we had to go see Claire, we went to Claire's house.

For her to be here instead felt like some kind of invasion or something. This house was supposed to be our safe spot, our castle. Now Daddy just let a monster inside. No, not just Daddy. Mommy, too. In fact, Mommy had welcomed Claire in. Why would she do that? "Does Mom not like me anymore?" Stacy asked. Even in the dim light under the table, her eyes looked a bit waxy, and her lips curled down. "I'm sure she does," I said, trying to comfort my sister. "Then why would she let Claire in here?" I didn't have a good answer, but I trusted Mom.

"She has to have some reason, and I bet it's a good one." "I don't know..." "I'm sure of it," I said confidently. "Mom loves us." The more I thought about it, the more convinced I was. Whatever Mom's reason was, I bet it was really smart. Stacy and I just had to wait to see what it was. Amelia's POV Inviting Claire into the house had been a shortsighted plan, even I could admit that. I had wanted to more closely evaluate her condition, but I hadn't considered that to do so, I would need Stacy's help. No wonder Damien was looking at me with daggers in his eyes.

I would have to apologize later, to the whole lot of them, for dragging them into this mess just for my curiosity. Though it wasn't just my professional wonderment, I also wanted to find a way to bring Claire down. If I could prove she wasn't being honest about her medical conditions, then maybe she would lose some of the sympathy Damien's pack seemed to hold for her. I just needed to get the girls on my side.

After Claire wheeled herself into the living room, I announced, "I'll go get the girls." Damien gave me a withering look, to which I sent him back an apologetic one, and then I headed back to the dining room to find Amy and Stacy. Yet when I walked into the dining room, the girls were nowhere to be found. I was certain they hadn't sneaked past us at any point, so they must have been nearby. 1/3 "Girls?" I called out. W-12BECAUS "It's just Mommy," came a whispered voice from under the table. Amy. "Shh," Stacy hushed her. My heart ached, realizing how much the girls didn't like Claire.

Inviting her in was a big mistake. Dropping down to my knees beside the table, I lifted the tablecloth and peeked under. Amy and Stacy were there, huddled together between the chairs, holding hands. "Are you okay, girls?" I asked them. "We don't like Claire," Amy explained. "Why would you let her come here?" Stacy asked, frowning at me. Gods, were those tears in her eyes? "I'm sorry," I said at once. "I wasn't thinking. But I'm a healer, you know? I thought if I brought her in here and saw how she healed with being near you, that I could understand more..." I didn't know how much to say.

The girls didn't like Claire. I wasn't sure if amplifying their dislike by explaining how I thought Claire was faking some of her illnesses would be a good idea. Especially if it turned out I was wrong about everything. "How often do you have to go see Claire?" I asked instead. The girls considered it. "Too often..." Stacy said. "Every other week," Amy said. "That seems like a lot," I said. Stacy nodded. Amy looked at me like she was studying me. "Mommy, do you think Claire is faking?" "I" I started to say, sitting up in surprise.

I sat up too high and bumped my head off the underside of the table. " Ouch." "You do," Amy said. "She does?" Stacy asked, looking at her sister. "Is that why you let Claire in the house?" Amy pressed. "You want to prove she's a faker?" Amy was a smart little girl. Very perceptive. I realized that my lies by omission were not going to work here. "Yes," I admitted. "But I shouldn't have done it without asking you." I felt very badly about this. "Stay here.

I'll find a way to get rid of her." I started to scooch backwards, out from under the table when Stacy said, "Wait." She looked at her sister and then at me. Blinking hard she cleared the tears from her eyes. "I want to help.' Damien's POV 2/3 While Annette went to retrieve the girls, I stayed in the living room with Claire. I wanted to check in on Stacy myself, to make sure she was okay with all of this, but I wasn't about to leave Claire anywhere in my house unsupervised. She couldn't be trusted at all. "I'm surprised to see Annette here," Claire said. "But perhaps I shouldn't be.

I heard about the near-death experience she suffered in Jake's pack, poor girl." "You... heard... about that?" I asked pointedly. Jake was very protective of his sister, and kept her name out of the news more often than not. Even the attack had been covered up by headlines about the arson of Jake's estate instead. It wasn't unusual for council members to have their sources, but with Claire, I felt extra suspicious. Given everything she had done to my family in the past, it felt vitally important to know who her connections were.

I wouldn't put it past her to have had conversation with Sienna herself. "It's not like it's a secret," she said. "But being strangled with a rope. What an ugly way to go." That detail was not released to anyone, of that I was sure. "How do you know that?" I asked her. She looked at me with innocent eyes. "What do you mean?" She batted her eyelashes at me. Maybe that whole naïve act would have worked with me in the past, but not anymore. I knew the type of person she was, and I knew what she was capable of. "You know more than you should," I told her outright.

I wanted her to know I wasn't falling for her lies this time. She shrugged. "I don't know what to tell you." Before I could press her further, Annette and the girls came into the room. Claire's entire demeanor changed. She brightened, as she waved Stacy closer. "Come and sit with me, my darling daughter." Stacy looked up at Annette. Annette looked back. Some kind of secret, wordless communication seemed to pass between the two of them. Then, with a deep breath, as if gathering her courage, Stacy moved closer to Claire. Amelia watched Claire like a hawk.

But I wasn't sure she knew Claire well enough, as I did, to see that Claire was watching her right back. COIN BUNDLE: get more free bonus Comments Support Share GET IT X 3/3 25 Ronus Joseph King
