Chapter 427 +25 Bonus Chapter 427 Damien's POV I was just about to leave the office when I saw another call from home. This time, it wasn't from Amella herself, but from the landline. Typically only the head housekeeper used that number when she was reordering supplies for the home or there was some kind of emergency. I checked the time. The head housekeeper should be gone for the day, so who was using this number. Lowering my phone, I ignored the call for now. Maybe it was just Amelia trying to reach me in a different way, though it wasn't like her to be sneaky like that.
Even so, it was something that I was determined to deal with later. Right now, my work mostly caught up for the day, I wanted to get back out there and continue the search for Claire and Sienna. I made it down the elevator and outside when my phone chimed again. The caller had left a message. I wanted to continue to ignore it, but, maybe because I was just so tired, my convictions weren't as strong as they usually were. My curiosity won out, as I wondered if maybe Amelia had been desperate enough to disguise her number in an attempt to reach me.
Unlocking my phone, I dialed my voicemail, then lifted my phone to my ear to hear the message. "Daddy? It's Amy." Immediately, my chest tightened, squeezing my heart in a vice grip. I hadn't heard the kids' voices in several days now. Amy sounded so small, so scared, like she was afraid to try to reach out to me. Immediately, my guilt and self-loathing waged war on my mind. What kind of father was I to allow my little girl to believe I would ever be unhappy to hear from her? Her voice also amplified my homesickness a thousand-fold. The feelings hit me like a truck.
I was here, standing outside the office, about to spend all night running through the forest trying to chase a scent I wasn't sure I would find. Where I wanted to be was at home, hugging my daughters and kissing my wife. "Daddy, you haven't been home in a while," Amy continued. "Mommy is starting to worry...' In the background, Stacy's voice piped up. "She's not worried, she's sad. Tell him she was crying. He should know." Amy cleared her throat. "Mommy is... sad. She misses you. We do, too. Mommy told us you are off doing important stuff. You've told us before that the pack is important.

But Daddy... isn't family important too? Isn't Mommy important? Aren't we?" "This won't do any good anyway," Stacy said in the background. "We probably won't even listen to this message." "Mommy was crying," Amy said to her. "We have to try. Daddy would do something if he knew he was hurting her." "Whatever," Stacy said in her most petulant tone. I knew my daughter well. She might have been coming across as difficult, but I knew this attitude only existed because of her own fear and worry that I might not come home.
1/3 Chapter 427 +25 Bonus That I might not choose family over everything else. "Please, Daddy. You are busy and that's okay. But please, come home. Just to visit. Just to stop Mommy from crying," Amy said. Then, very quietly, she added, "Sorry to bother you," and hung up. The message ended. I lowered the phone without deleting it. Hearing their voices had rattled something loose inside of me, but nothing hurt worse than the realization that I was making my family believe that I didn't want them. Maybe Keegan had been right after all.
Maybe I was causing a strain so tight that something would break. But he was wrong if he thought it would be me. Instead, it seemed as if my family were the ones carrying the burden. I was neglecting them, and I was causing them to break. There was much to do. Claire and Sienna were still out there. I couldn't just ignore or forget my duty to capture them and the danger they posed to my loved ones. But how could I concentrate on what I needed to do when I knew my family needed me? I tried to, for a while, I went through the same motions that had carried me forward the past few days.
Pushing myself to the brink, I went along with the routine, making my usual rounds. Halfway through, I just stopped. Whether it was my wolf making the decision, or we collectively decided we had enough, I wasn't sure. I just couldn't make myself go forward anymore. I was trying to protect my family from harm, but in committing so much of my life to that cause, I was inadvertently hurting them myself. This wasn't protection. This was suffering. I needed to go home. I knew that now, with absolute clarity. I couldn't convince my legs to move forward, but I could turn myself back.
In wolf form, I ran back toward my city, my neighborhood, my house. My family. Shifting back to human at the door, I greeted the guards who allowed me inside. The house was mostly dark inside, with only a few lights on dim to allow the guards stationed inside to see the first floor. "Everyone retired for the night," the guard inside told me. After thanking him, I moved upstairs, moving as quietly as I could. I didn't want to wake the house, only to be among them again. I checked in on the girls, found them each coiled up in their sleep, snoring lightly.
Then, I opened the door to the bedroom I shared with Amelia. She was coiled up too, wrapped around one of my shirts from the hamper. My heart ached for her, and I quickly disrobed and crawled into the bed behind her. I should have let her sleep perhaps, but I couldn't let her yearn for me even in dreams. I was right here. She didn't need to scent one of my shirts. She could have the real thing. 2/3 Chopte AXT Wrapping my arms around her waist, I tugged her into the curve of my body. Immediately she turned into the warmth I offered, reaching out for me even in her sleep, the shirt forgotten.
"Beloved," I whispered and kissed her gently, on the cheek, on the nose, and, as she lifted her face to me, her eyes fluttering open at last, on her lips. "Damien," she said, her voice sleep-rough. "I'm dreaming." "Touch me," I told her. "I'm here for real." She did touch me then, tracing her hands over my chest before resting her palms above my heart. "You came home," she said. "I missed you," I told her, then kissed her again. She was more awake now, and more pliant. She opened her mouth to my searching tongue.
Grabbing the hem of her sleep shirt, I started to lift it, exposing her full breasts. Immediately I cupped them with my hands and she gasped. "Damien," she sighed against my lips. I had gone far too long without showing this woman how much I adored her. I would not allow her to question it for even one more minute. Rolling on top of her, I found my home in the space between her thighs. I was exhausted but eager, and my will was strong. I was determined to show her the depths of my love all night long.
