Chapter 166 Amelia's POV I paused, willing despite myself to hear Damien out. This foolish heart of mine was so in love with him, I felt like I had to hear what he needed to say. While I wasn't as sure that it would change my mind in any way, I just... I wasn't going to leave her feeling any kind of what if's. When I returned to Jake's pack, it would be with the full knowledge that what Damien had to say just wasn't enough to keep me with him. So I waited for him to proceed. He gave Claire a long look, before turning back to me. "Amelia," he said.
"Just answer me this one thing." I nodded, ready to give him that. He deserved that and more for all he had done for me. "How did you get the impression that I was unfaithful?" he asked. I blinked, somewhat surprised by the question, though perhaps I didn't need to be. Whether Damien was guilty of infidelity or he was not, anyone would want to know who cast the shadows on their reputation. My own eyes slid to Claire. She glared right back at me. "Did Claire tell you?" Damien asked. I looked back at him, and nodded.
"She told me that the pain I was experiencing was directly related to the strain in our mating bond. She said that you and her have been having an affair." "She directly claimed that?" Damien asked. "Yes," I replied. He straightened marginally, coming to his full height. "Amelia," he said, and each time he said my name it was like he was preparing to make a new earth-shaking statement. This time, I actually braced myself, unsure what to expect. He too seemed to be preparing himself for something.
Then he spoke, "I've decided to cut Claire and her child out of my life." "What?" Claire gasped, her eyes going wide, her cheeks paling. "Damien, you can't -" "You have intervened in my life for the last time, Claire. I expect you to leave the pack as soon as you are able," Damien said. "My brother will never allow this," she countered, anger in her eyes now, alongside the shock. "I will speak to Ethan when I get back to the pack," Damien said. Jake, standing beside me, scoffed. "I'll believe it when I see it. You chose Claire to be the mother of your heir, right? And did that for a reason.
I doubt you would so quickly come to your senses now, to see Amelia for her true value." "Amelia means more to me than any werewolf lineage," Damien said. As much as I wanted to believe that, it was such a drastic turn-around from his previous stances that I too found it difficult to accept his words. If he had taken this stance before I left the first time, maybe we could have worked things out sooner.

Instead, he 1/3 had doubled down on his need to have a strong werewolf heir, casting our child, my feelings, and me in general entirely to the side in favor of Claire and what Damien felt was the goodwill of the pack. He never gave my child and me the chance to prove ourselves capable. He just assumed, because I was human, that we wouldn't be. Maybe I'd proved him wrong over the past several months, where I had stepped up to make something of myself and been strong to continue to carry our daughter despite a difficult pregnancy. But, I wasn't so sure.
He had been so confident in the past that making Claire his heir's mother had been the correct choice. How could I truly believe that had changed? Especially when he was announcing it here, in a place and time where we were all still emotionally charged and physically exhausted? "Consider things for a while, Damien," I said. "This isn't the place for this... But... I don't know... If after a time, you still feel this way...' "You don't think I'm genuine," he said, enunciating each word slowly as if slowly waking from his own shock. "It's been a long series of days," I said.
"We both need time to process. And... even if you are to cut out Claire as you are saying, I'm not sure it will actually change anything between us." My heart hung heavy in my chest. I hated it, but the words were true. "I don't know if I can ever trust you again.' I watched Damien's face as he slowly came to understand my words. It didn't matter what he did or said today, nothing would change the fact that I was leaving her with Jake. "Come on," Jake said, touching my arm. My heart whispered, I'm sorry, to Damien, even if my tongue couldn't manage the words.
My mind told me that Damien had brought this on himself with his words and actions, but I was so tired, so heart sore, I didn't know what was true anymore. Damien's POV Amelia went with Jake. I stayed there, watching them go. As they departed, the crowd seemed to understand that the drama had passed, so everyone else started going their way too. Even Alpha King Benedict retreated into the deeper halls of his palace. Sienna slithered back into the walls.
Even Victoria turned to Claire and told her, "I'll get our things ready for travel." Claire didn't even acknowledge her, perhaps still thinking she was a traitor. In truth, after my declaration, Claire was lucky Victoria was talking to her at all. I'd as good as exiled Claire. Victoria, by law, should be the one not acknowledging Claire anymore. Claire ignored her though, and continued staring at me. "Did you mean this?" she asked. "You are removing me from the pack?" "You have directly sabotaged my relationship with my Luna by feeding her lies," I said. To me, the punishment was justified.
Other Alphas might have had her killed for less. She should consider herself fortunate that I was merely exiling her. Looking down, Claire placed her hand on her waist. "What about your heir?" "My heir no longer," I said. 2/3 The child was my only regret in this. I had made a choice to help bring this baby into existence. To cast the child out fully felt distasteful, but I didn't know what else to do. Claire couldn't be unpunished. Perhaps I could find a way to support the child, even from a distance. I would discuss everything with Amelia first, though.
I would never leave her in the dark again. If she would even listen to me. Claire turned her gaze downward, her eyes wet. "Please, Alpha," she said. "At least let me give birth near my family. I've never had a child before. I'm... frightened." I couldn't be cruel, not with the child who was so innocent in all this. "Very well," I said. "But once the baby is born and you are healthy, you will need to leave." She nodded glumly. While I wasn't a particularly patient man, I could be for the sake of the baby. With Amelia safe, there was no need for urgency other than my own desire to be with her.
I could wait a while, knowing she is well-cared for in Jake's pack. But I would not wait forever. Comments +2 Support Share 3/3 Joseph King
