Chapter 398 Amelia's POV I returned to the hospital the next day, after Damien went to work and the girls to school. Before he left, Damien had suggested that I take it easy that day, given everything that had just happened at the banquet and with Ian, but I wasn't going to just sit around. It had been some time since the last banquet, and I wanted to check on the boy who had been poisoned. When I arrived and headed to his room, his mother hugged me tightly. "He's going to be released tomorrow," she said. Her eyes were damp, tears welling. "Thank you so much, Luna.

You saved his life." I didn't believe that I did much of anything, but I didn't have the heart to disparage her in this moment. She looked so relieved, so happy, I felt to say anything negative, even against myself, might ruin the mood of the moment. So instead, I just smiled, shared in her joy, and told her, "I'm glad I was there to help." I spent near an hour in the room with them, talking with the boy and his mother. They never really relaxed around me, treating me formally as Luna, but it was nice to be around such joy for a while. After an hour, though, I felt my welcome wearing thin.

The mother and child, though friendly, were being wary of me, as if afraid to say the wrong thing and offend me. I didn't know how to convey to them that they didn't have to worry. So, before long, I saw myself out and stepped into the hallway. There, I took a breath. Now that I had seen to the health of the poisoned child, I supposed I should just return home and find ways to busy myself. Yet, glancing to the side, I caught sight of the friendly nurse who had let slip before that I had spent time training in Jake's pack, apprenticing under Healer Eve. That had been a revelation for me.

Damien, nor anyone else, had told me about that. Even after my visit to Jake's estate, no one there had mentioned that I had lived there for a time. It felt like a big secret meant to be kept especially from me, and I wanted to know more. I wanted to know why. Perhaps this overly-friendly nurse was my answer in this. I walked over to her where she stood at the nurses' station. "Hello," I told her. "Do you remember me?" She looked at me and then jumped. "Oh, Luna! Yes, of course." Seeing me, she seemed more nervous than before. Perhaps she realized how much she had revealed to me.

I decided to press on anyway, hoping to glean even a sliver of new information. "Last time we spoke, you... reminded me that I had apprenticed under Healer Eve in Jake's pack. I don't suppose you heard anything else about me in that time? Do you know if Damien was there with me?" She paled a little. "Luna, it's truly not my place to say. It's none of my business, and I never should have said anything before. If you want to know more about it, you should ask Alpha Damien or Alpha Jake.

I'm sure they would be happy to share things with you." 1/2 Chapter 398 +25 Bonus As much as I trusted and loved Damien and Jake, I wasn't nearly as convinced that this was true. In fact, whenever I tried to bring up the past, everyone around me was very mysterious and dodgy, like they were all purposefully keeping things from me. I was starting to grow tired, feeling like I was being kept out of the loop.

"That's fine," I said, and chose a different course of conversation, "I was just hoping you could tell me if you ever heard of anyone with the name Annette?" Comments Support Share 2/2 Joseph King
