---- Chapter 85 I'm Hungry "Ardenia, don't be afraid. I'm right here..." Ardenia slowly opened her eyes to see Tobias's worried face. He stared at her anxiously, his whole expression full of concern. "Tobias?" Ardenia blinked at him in confusion, then suddenly threw her arms around him and burst into tears. "Ah! Tobias, | had a nightmare. Everyone hated me in the dream!" Tobias felt a stab of pain in his chest. He hugged Ardenia tightly, one big hand gently rubbing the back of her head. "It's okay. I'm here. | like Ardenia.
We all like Ardenia!" Seeing Ardenia so vulnerable broke Tobias's heart. He promised himself he would love her and protect her, even if it cost him his life. Ardenia stayed curled in Tobias's arms, crying for a long time. She sniffled and sobbed until she drifted back to sleep. Tobias wanted to get some water to clean her up, but he ---- couldn't bear to leave her, so he just sat there holding her. He tried humming like Calder. It wasn't as good as Calder's humming, but it wasn't bad either. It actually seemed to work. Ardenia slowly calmed down in his arms.
Tobias watched her with nothing but love in his eyes and couldn't help giving her a soft kiss. They both slept soundly for the rest of the night. Ardenia's moods always came and went quickly. Plus, she never remembered her dreams, so when she woke up, she was back to normal. Seeing Tobias still asleep, she started playing with his hair, twisting it around her fingers. When that got boring, she started braiding tiny plaits, and her handiwork made her giggle. "Don't mess around." Tobias's voice was lazy and full of affection.

Even with his eyes closed, he managed to grab Ardenia's hand and bring it to his lips for a kiss. ---- He pulled Ardenia close, hugging her for a long while before reluctantly getting up. Snakes were naturally clingy, and even more so when they liked someone. "I'm hungry!" Ardenia had already forgotten all about crying so hard last night. Right now, she just wanted food. Well, after all that "exercise", who wouldn't be hungry? She wiped at the dried tears in the corner of her eyes, feeling a bit sorry for herself. She was so tired her eyes were crusty. All her mates were ridiculously strong.
Sometimes she wondered if she would even survive without her wood abilities. Tobias insisted that Ardenia wear the snake-skin skirt he'd made himself. Last night, she found out the material came from his own shed skin. She had been a little put off, but Tobias kept insisting, and in the end, she just gave in. ---- It was actually pretty soft, so Ardenia accepted it. Hand in hand, the two of them went back to the little kitchen, where Halden had already finished making breakfast. Niall gave Tobias a meaningful look as he sat at the table. "Didn't someone run away from home last night?
And now look how fast he's back." Tobias replied, "I'm going to wash the laundry." He picked up Ardenia's old linen dress and, blushing, walked over to the well. He took a quick sniff of it before washing, loving Ardenia's scent on it. Niall was obviously jealous, but Tobias ignored him. Honestly, Niall really was jealous-especially seeing Ardenia wearing that skirt made out of Tobias's skin. He was even more annoyed. He snorted and turned his head away in a huff, but he kept glancing at Ardenia out of the corner of his eye. Stupid snake, so over the top.
He got what he wanted, but he even marked the little female with his scent! So possessive-it was ridiculous. ---- Halden ignored Tobias. His eyes could only hold one person, and seeing Ardenia in good spirits, he brought over a plate of fried eggs. "| found these this morning. Try some." Halden was a quick learner. He could take over anything after seeing Ardenia do it once. Ardenia had just sat down when Vesper handed her a glass of fresh mulberry juice. "Try it." Compared to Niall's moody act, these two were almost being too sweet. Halden was relieved to see Ardenia eating well.
Therians were already strong, and these past two days... Well, thank goodness for Ardenia's wood abilities, or he worried she wouldn't be able to handle it. "Ardenia, how do you make this?" He pointed at the bowl of meat filling, which had been ready since last night, for ravioli Ardenia said, "I'll do it. There's something | want to talk to you all about after | eat!" She planned to clear the wasteland while the weather was good. She still had seeds, and if they worked quickly, they'd have enough stored for winter and wouldn't have to hunt ---- every day. The sun was nice today.
After breakfast, she could finally make those mosquito-repellent pouches-the herbs had been drying for days and were nearly ready. And she needed to sort out the camphor Vesper had brought back today, too!
