---- Chapter 77 The Busy Kitchen "Start the fire. Make the oil." Vesper said yes and went to light the fire. Before he did, he leaned over and glanced at the pig intestines Ardenia had thrown away. He felt a quiet sense of relief. Thank goodness she tossed that thing. That stuff was... well. He really couldn't bring himself to eat it. That "no one escapes good food" rule still applied. They just didn't have spices yet. When the fire under the stove burned hot, Ardenia brought over the jar to hold the oil.

She asked Calder to go pull some wild green onions from the small patch of land in front of the side kitchen. She had planted them there earlier for convenience. Before Calder came back, Halden had already ---- crushed the wheat by hand and made flour. Tobias stared at the bowl of white powder, wide- eyed. "So this comes from that spiky bird food?" Ardenia laughed. "It's wheat. It's good stuff. It's a staple food. The meat we eat is just a side dish." Vesper looked confused. "Isn't food just food?" "It's not the same," Ardenia said. "We call everything food, but there are different kinds.

Wheat is a staple. Later, I'll grow other things too. I'll explain them one by one." Vesper smiled. He liked how she talked like that. She looked like she was glowing. She didn't need to be pretty. Just standing there was enough to draw everyone's eyes. She was his female. Niall woke up then. The smell woke him. His animal-skin clothes hung loosely, and his eyes still looked sleepy. His pretty eyes watched Ardenia with a soft, fond look as she worked in the kitchen. ---- He laughed quietly and walked over. He ignored the others and hugged her from behind.

His chest pressed against her back, and the closeness felt a little too intimate. Halden's head almost exploded. "Come here," he said. Niall tilted his head and smiled. "No." He looked like he was begging for a punch. Tobias stepped in and used his tail to wrap Niall and pull him away. Halden gave him a thumbs-up. Vesper did too. Niall clicked his tongue. He didn't care. He still had his tail. Ardenia laughed and tapped his tail away. "Stop it." She turned to him. "Did you rest enough? If you're still tired, go lie down. Dinner isn't ready yet." Niall rested his chin on his hand.

He wasn't upset ---- at all. He looked lazy and relaxed. The wind lifted his hair a little. "Yeah," he said softly. "I'm fine now. Your care makes me feel better." Tobias smacked his lips. So this is a vixen. He really lived up to the name. When he showed up, the whole mood changed. Sure enough, Ardenia looked back and saw Niall and Tobias fighting at the table. Niall stood on the table and tried to bite Tobias' tail. Tobias used both hands to pull Niall's tail. It looked kind of cute. It also looked kind of stupid. "Don't flip the table,' Ardenia said.

"If you break it, you don't eat dinner." She kept working while she spoke. She took out ---- the single tender strip of meat near the pig's lower back. She chopped it up and planned to make ravioli with it the next day. Niall and Tobias stopped right away. They both sat down. Then they felt sitting wasn't right, so they stood near the stove next to Ardenia. The sky started to get dark. The kitchen felt quiet and warm. One passed her a plate. One wiped her sweat. One gave her water. One gave her dried fruit. No one stayed idle. They talked and joked while the oil in the pot started to bubble.

Ardenia checked it and slowly scooped the oil into the jar. Calder came back then. He washed the green onions and put them on the counter. The smell of hot oil made him lean in too. ---- So this is how oil is made. He looked at Ardenia with warm eyes. He felt proud again. My little female really is something special. After the oil, the dough, the onion water, and the chopped onions were ready, Ardenia started cooking. She mixed water into the flour and kneaded it into dough. Then she pulled it into small pieces. She used most of the flour and saved the rest for ravioli.

The five males stood in a line, not knowing where to look. Ardenia just felt too amazing. Her hands looked like they had magic. Every day with her felt like a surprise.
