---- Chapter 38 What He Chose to See Calder lost his temper. "Are you trying to get yourself killed? If you don't know how to speak properly, keep your mouth shut." He thought, That showy fox has spent all night poking at everyone. Now he wants to dig the blade in even deeper? "Relax," Niall drawled, voice light and lazy. "Compared to Halden, the rest of us clearly don't measure up. He's the only one who gets on the bed, and now he gets to leave with her alone. How enviable." He ignored the others entirely.
With a single sweep of his nine white tails, a fox den shimmered into existence right beside Ardenia's cave. Is he for real? He just moved his whole house here? Calder felt ready to explode. No wonder that sly fox has been circling for days. He's not just hanging around. He's staking his claim right in front of us. Shameless. ---- Calder spat out every curse he knew, then shoved his doubts aside and marched over to claim a spot to the left of Ardenia's cave. Two small caves sat there. Both were cramped, yet close to the entrance. He took the one in front without hesitation.
Tobias arrived moments later and settled in the cave behind it. One way or another, both ended up much too close for Ardenia's comfort. With Vesper off searching elsewhere, the three left behind worked in a heavy, resentful silence as they carved out their new nests, None of them dared admit the truth: the little female had already picked her favorite. Back in the pocket space, Ardenia cried until sleep finally claimed her. ---- Her body ached, every pain sharpened by the alcohol. Once the tears started, they refused to stop.
Halden stayed with her all night, steady and gentle, soothing her until her breathing eased. When she fell asleep in his arms, Halden moved carefully and looked around. The space stretched broad and hazy, cluttered with strange objects arranged in ways that made no sense. Her earlier words echoed in his mind, and realization crept in. Maybe this has nothing to do with the Beast God's guidance. She isn't Ardenia Snow. He frowned at the items. Every piece felt strange and unfamiliar. Do these things belong to her world? So that's what she means when she says she misses home.

The memory of her tears in the bathroom struck him again, regret tightening his chest. He promised himself, Anyway, we're together now./ must treat her with more care. If |can make her happy enough, maybe her ---- longing for home will fade. With that thought, Halden lay back down beside her. This place feels strange, as if space itself folds in and locks tight. I've never heard of an ability that can draw both itself and another person inside like this. Even so, warmth bloomed in his chest. She brings me here. That choice alone separates me from the rest.
She said she liked me and called me "Honey." She even mentioned I'm good-looking. He forced himself to stop thinking. Every thought of Ardenia unraveled his resolve. Even the air seemed sweeter with her close by. Her nose twitched in her sleep, small and delicate. Something shifted inside him. He leaned closer, studying her with fresh concern. ---- Awave of guilt crashed over him. She's hurt. "I'm sorry," he whispered. "| didn't know." Halden knelt by the bed, eyes fixed on her. He thought he had simply misjudged himself, never realizing he had truly hurt her.
The worst of it twisted his stomach into knots. They had not even gone all the way, not to the final step. The future tangled him in doubt. He could not picture a life where he kept his distance from his little female. A quiet sigh escaped him. Ardenia slept deeply, untouched by dreams. When she finally woke, Halden's handsome face was the first thing she saw. Arush of pure happiness flooded her. What a joy it is to wake up to this handsome face. "still hurt?" His voice stayed gentle. She shook her head, then realized what he really meant. Heat crept up her cheeks.
---- "I'm hungry," she murmured, looping her arms around his neck. He smiled faintly. "Let's go make breakfast. I'll cook today." "Since when do you know how to cook?" She blinked at him in disbelief. He replied, "I've watched you long enough and picked things up when | help. It might not be as good as yours, though." "Honey, you're incredible." She smiled at him. "The bathroom you built was perfect. | can't imagine surviving here without you." His eyes curved with a smile he couldn't hide. "You're far too good at flattering me." His gaze lingered before finally settling on her lips.
She was not beautiful, but with her, he could never stop kissing her. It never felt enough. Ardenia felt the same. Halden carried a clean, light scent she could never quite describe. One kiss blurred into the next, and before they realized it, they ---- had slipped out of the pocket space together. Ardenia lifted her gaze through the haze, only to meet Vesper's golden eyes. Panic shot through her, and she instinctively tucked herself into Halden's arms. Halden caught the shift at once. His eyes opened to Vesper's, storm-dark stare. He glanced around, confusion flickering. through him.
