---- Chapter 39 Disturbance "Hmm. Am | getting in the way?" Halden stood completely silent. Not a word, not even a twitch. "Well. Looks like I really picked the worst time." Seriously? Why did that line sound so familiar? Ardenia felt like crawling into a hole. And the way Vesper stared at her? Yeah, not helping. The whole scene made her feel like she'd just been caught cheating. "Ardenia, do you even remember what you told me last night in the cave? Look at you now." Vesper hated that he was saying this. Halden was her mate. She could choose whoever she wanted, but that.
didn't stop it from burning. "We didn't do anything!" Halden spoke calmly. Then, he turned to Ardenia with that soft look and said, "Rest a bit longer. I'll go make something to eat. I'll let you know when it's done." Vesper leaned back against the wall, watching their exchange. Their sappy eye contact made his jaw tighten all over again ---- Once Ardenia got settled, Halden gave Vesper a long look. His gaze dropped, and then he gave a slow smirk. "She wasn't feeling uncomfortable last night, so we went out to clear her head. You actually showed up at the perfect time.
I'm headed to the kitchen. You stay here with her." He hit the last two words with emphasis. Vesper hadn't expected that kind of grace from Halden. Both of them were notoriously territorial. However, with Halden stepping aside, Vesper's edge started to dull. "We're both her mates. Feeling jealous is fine, but don't let it get out of hand." Then, Halden turned and walked out of the cave, leaving the two of them alone. He had seen Ardenia using her wood-based ability to heal him earlier while they were kissing. If she wanted something to happen with Vesper, she could make it happen.

Even so, he still felt jealous about it. As he reached the cave entrance, he turned to glance back and let out a long, frustrated sigh ---- "I didn't mean it like that. That came out wrong." The moment Halden stepped out, Vesper dropped the nice guy act. He strode straight to her bed, scooped her right up, and pulled her into his arms without a word. One gorgeous man left. Another gorgeous man entered. Ardenia couldn't help but think, God, I'm seriously winning right now. "You don't have to explain. | wasn't exactly graceful either.
After | came back from the plaza last night, | got hit with a wave of bad thoughts. Before | knew it, | got drunk and dragged Halden off with me..." She leaned close to Vesper's ear. "Were you jealous?" Her breath tickled, The scent of her shampoo and skin hit him hard and fast. Something in him lit up. His throat bobbed. His face went crimson. Ardenia broke into laughter. All of her mates were dominant and proud, but underneath it? Total sweethearts. Flirt with them just a little, and they'd melt like kids in a candy shop. She seriously couldn't get enough ---- And best of all?
This was all above board. She'd been a mess of nerves earlier. But why? They were married. All of them. Legally. This was just part of the deal. Ardenia grinned and sat cross-legged in bed, still tucked snugly in Vesper's arms. Her hand instinctively reached for his fuzzy ears. They were soft and warm. Just like Halen's. "You into ear rubs?" She rested her chin on his shoulder and let out a soft hum of agreement. Vesper felt a little more at ease. Ardenia didn't smell like Halden, which meant she hadn't lied to him. She had no clue what was running through his mind.
She just kept playing with his hair like a kid with a new toy. Honestly, who could resist a hottie like him? But the longer she messed with him, the more her brain wandered. Last night had definitely traumatized her. She'd seen Calder's member and, yeah, it was insane. Still kind of within bounds, though. So, what was Vesper packing? ---- The second she thought about it, she ditched all attempts at innocence. Please, don't let this be another case of 'look but don't touch.' Halden's thing nearly broke her. She was still sore thinking about it. And what really sucked?
They didn't even finish the job. This was Vesper's first time on her bed. And wow, that old fox hadn't exaggerated. Her bed felt like a cloud. Her comforter smelled amazing too. Vesper lay there, all laid-back and dreamy, ready to be doted on. That switch-up in his vibe made her grin even harder. With him acting this sweet, how could she not give him a little treat? She leaned in and kissed his neck. Vesper groaned low, hands sliding around her waist. Wait. Waist? His eyes shot open. Hold up. No way. How long had it been? When did she get a waist? His desire disappeared in a blink.
He sat up fast, eyes scanning her from head to toe. She looked skinnier than she did yesterday. "Have you not been eating? Why are you so thin all of a sudden? Ardenia, this kind of dieting messes with your health!" ---- Sure, every guy loved havinga stunning mate. But not if it came at the cost of her health. He'd pick a healthy, curvy Ardenia over a worn-down 'one any day.
