---- Chapter 58 Get Lost "That got stuck in my teeth,' Tobias muttered under his breath as he stood close to Ardenia. "Wait till I make you chicken strips. Then you will learn what crispy really means." As Ardenia spoke, she flicked two small pebbles from her hand. Both hit the wild chickens cleanly. A startled cluck rang out, and the two plump birds dropped to the ground. Grinning, she hurried over and lifted them, weighing them in her hands. Together, they had to weigh at least seven or eight pounds. Tobias could think of nothing except chicken strips now.
He pointed at the birds and asked, "Those can really be made crispy?" "Of course. There are lots of ways to cook chicken." Ardenia said this while waving him off. "I will handle the cooking. You go sort the wheat we gathered. Keep the heads and throw away the stalks." She moved fast. Bleed the birds, boil the water, ---- pluck the feathers. Everything flowed in one smooth sequence. She kept the giblets but tossed the intestines aside. Since Tobias wanted chicken strips, she cut off the large breast pieces. She had happened to find a few wild eggs in the mountains the day before.
There were no breadcrumbs, but an egg wash would work just fine. Making chicken strips was simple. She did not have many seasonings on hand, but luckily, there was still a bit of bright pepper left from earlier. Ardenia rinsed the chicken breasts clean, carefully pulling away the membranes and excess fat. She sliced them into thin strips along the grain, coated them in beaten egg, then added salt and bright pepper powder. Finally, she tossed in chopped wild chives and massaged everything together to marinate, then set it aside.
With the remaining chicken, she chopped it into evenly sized chunks. Ingredients were limited, so she decided to keep it simple and make bright pepper chicken. A numbing, spicy kick should still be quite palatable. ---- Two chickens were obviously not enough. She washed some violet dandelion greens and quickly stir-fried them. As for the leftover meat from before, she had rubbed it heavily with coarse salt and hung it up to air-dry so it would not spoil. It would be perfect to eat at noon. She cut the wild chives into sections and sliced the salted meat thin.

Ardenia stir-fried a huge basinful until the aroma filled the air, rich and mouthwatering. Once the dishes were ready, she dropped a large chunk of animal fat into the pan and let it melt. She tested the oil temperature, and when it started bubbling aggressively, she quickly dipped the chicken strips into the egg yolk mixture and tossed them straight into the pan. This step had to be fast. Only high heat and quick cooking would keep the chicken tender and free of any gamey smell. From four chicken breasts, she fried up a heaping plate.
It could not compare to modern seasonings, but it still came out fragrant, crisp, and satisfying. Halden had been fully absorbed in building the fence, but the moment the smell drifted over, he ---- could not focus anymore. His stomach growled loudly. He was starving. Whatever that little female was cooking for lunch smelled excellent. He set the stone in his hand down, and when he looked up, he saw Julia. His brows pulled together. "What are you doing here?" "Halden, you know Iris likes you guys, right? Leave Ardenia. Once I find Iris, I will have you bond with her.
Iris is much prettier than Ardenia." Halden laughed when he heard that, sharp and irritated. His gaze darkened as he looked at Julia. There was nothing friendly in his eyes. If anything, he looked at her like she was unhinged. "At the very least, you are Ardenia's own mother, so I will say this much to you. You liking Iris is your business. I do not like her. She might be pretty, but Ardenia is the best female in this world." When he mentioned Ardenia, his expression softened without him realizing it. Because of Ardenia, I get to eat food that actually tastes ---- good.
I see things I never even knew existed before. I sleep on a soft bed, with a small pillow that belongs just to me. She is a divine envoy from an advanced civilization. When she comes, she brings her favor with her, and it falls on me as well. That is my honor. Besides Ardenia, I do not look at any other females. "She is really as good as you say?" Julia swallowed as she spoke. She had caught that smell a long time ago, and it had been driving her crazy.
"Then go get the food she made and bring it to me." She had asked the other therian in the Tribe and only then found out that it was Ardenia, that ugly thing, who was cooking. Julia had been stunned for a long moment. That lazy good-for-nothing Ardenia actually knows how to cook now? And it smells this good? I was planning to go over and demand some, but that d*mned Halden actually sets up wooden stakes. One afier another, they are all clearly out to make things difficult forme. Halden heard that, and his expression immediately turned dark. ---- Do I look stupid?
Is Julia bold enough to scheme right in front of me now? "Get lost!" Halden snapped back. Ardenia was leaning against the mulberry tree, watching Halden and Julia standing outside the fence with an amused, almost lazy look on her face. She had only stepped out to mess around with making some juice, and even then, she still ended up seeing people she had zero interest in seeing. She brushed a loose strand of hair back behind her ear. One look was all it took. Halden immediately jogged over to her. "Ardenia." It had only been one morning, yet his face was already flushed red from the sun.
Ardenia frowned slightly. "Time to eat." She did not wait for a response. She bent down, picked up the mulberries from the ground, and turned to leave. Halden quickly stepped in and took them from her hands. He pressed her back against the tree trunk, his large frame crowding in close. She turned her head, the side of her nose ---- brushing right past his moving throat. He was covered in sticky sweat. Ardenia lifted her hand and shoved him lightly. "You stink."
