---- Chapter 78 Too Many Mates After the oil was ready, Ardenia made some flaky dough. Then she scooped out all the crispy bits. That one small action made several of them lean over at the same time and stretch their necks. Ardenia froze for a moment. Then she laughed and scolded them gently. "I really don't know what to do with you guys." What could she do? They were her mates. Of course she had to spoil them. Ugh. Why does that sound so cheesy? She thought that in her head, but her hands moved on their own. She fed each of the five a crispy bit.
The other four slowly started to look unhappy. Their looks were all aimed at Halden. ---- They remembered the last time Ardenia made these. Halden had taken a huge share by himself. He had even been fed by her personally. That thought made the four of them bare their teeth right away. They worked together and pushed Halden to the back. Then they all opened their mouths wide again and faced Ardenia. "Ardenia, here, ah, ah, ah." Ardenia stayed silent. Could anyone imagine that scene? Four tall, handsome men stood there with their mouths open like puppies waiting to be fed.
Behind them, Halden jumped around in a panic. Ardenia felt that if Halden didn't care about the shed so much, he would have already bounced into the air like he had springs under his feet. Having too many mates was tiring. Ardenia shook her head and sighed. She gave each of them one more piece. That finally ended the ---- little mess. She chopped the crispy bits into small pieces. She took out the small dough balls that had been resting earlier and brushed them with oil. She added the chopped bits, rolled them into balls, pressed them flat, and put them into the pan.

The whole process flowed without pause. It looked smooth. It also smelled good. Most important of all, it was something they had never eaten before. They could tell just by looking that it was going to be great. Ardenia put five pieces into the pan at once. She chickened out. She didn't even dare to imagine what would happen if she made only four. She knew they would fight for them the moment they came out. Just thinking about it made her nervous. So many jealous looks. So many "you play favorites" faces. It was scary. ---- A good female had to treat everyone equally.
Ardenia really felt that now. She flipped the flatbreads while she quietly planned to find work for those five. They couldn't stay idle. She looked toward the land across the river. She wanted to go out again later and see if she could find anything new. This world was full of treasures. Every trip was tiring, but the rewards were always big. Now she had tools. She planned to find a few people in the tribe tomorrow to help clear the land. She would feed them. The pig they brought back tonight was huge. The weather was about to get hot, and there was no fridge. It wouldn't last long.
She might as well invite people to work and share the pig at the same time. That solved two problems at once. ---- Halden had been working on the fence around the cave for two days already. That job was exhausting. She had checked it too. If she wanted a long-term solution, the fence was needed. Not only that, but it might also need to be bigger. Thinking long-term, she also wanted to clear the land on the other side of the river. The side near the water could be used for wet fields. The side near the mountain could be used for dry fields to grow other main crops.
After she finished planning, the flatbreads were ready. She picked them up and placed them into a small basket. The smell filled the air, making everyone hungry. The five of them stared at the golden, crispy flatbreads. They looked at each other. None of them reached out. Ardenia froze for a second. "Why aren't you eating?" ---- Halden said, "We wait for you." Vesper said, "We're a family. You always cook, and you always eat last. That isn't right." Tobias said, "I'll learn too." To win a female's heart, it took gifts or real work. Niall was good at gifts. Halden was good at work.
Both of them had a place in her heart. They couldn't stop that, so they had to learn from them. Most of all, they couldn't guard food like before. They had to change their bad habits. They had a female now, so they had to behave better. Calder said, "It tastes better when I eat with you, Ardenia." He told himself to stay calm. The flatbreads looked amazing, but he had to hold back. His eyes had to stop staring at them. ---- Then he realized what he was doing and felt confused. Niall said, "Won't you feed me one yourself?" That was too much. Everyone felt both speechless and angry. Bang!
Ardenia jumped in shock. Before she could react, the other four dragged Niall outside. Soon, there was splashing from the river. Then came Niall's angry shouting. Forget it. All five of them are so childish. The rest of the flatbreads finished cooking. Ardenia stir-fried shredded pork with green onions. She made tomato-and-egg soup too. She cooked the minced meat first. Then she added the tomatoes and salt. After the tomatoes released their juice, she added some water.
