Chapter 177 Lena was missing her bestie, so she picked up the phone and called Whitney on the sixth day of the New Year holiday. "Whit, happy New Year!" Lena said brightly. Whitney gave a gentle smile. "Happy New Year!" "Whit, can I tell you something?" Lena said, her voice a little hesitant. Whitney didn't notice Lena's hesitation. "Go ahead, Lena. I'm all ears." Lena blushed a little. "Whit, I'm pregnant. Just hit the one-month mark. You're the first person I'm telling." Whitney was stunned for a second, and then broke into a big smile. "Congratulations!

Lena, you're going to be a mom!" Lena smiled softly, her hand resting on her belly, still feeling a little surreal. "Wait, you didn't tell Dustin first?" Whitney asked. Lena snorted and said, "Who knows what kind of jealousy he's got going on? He's sulking at the hospital now. If he wants to act like that, he can just stay there forever for all I care!" "Lena, don't be mad. If there's a misunderstanding, just talk it out. Getting upset isn't good for the baby," Whitney said gently. "Yeah, I know.

Whit, I just didn't have anyone else to share this with, so you were the first person I thought of. Whit, aren't you coming back in about six months?" Lena asked. "Yeah. Don't worry, Lena. If you need anything, just call me," Whitney replied. "Whit, are you feeling tired? Your voice sounds so weak," Lena said, concern in her tone. Whitney paused and said, "Yeah. Lena, you should get some rest too. Talk to you later when you're free." Then Whitney hung up the phone. Whitney had been burning up and feeling out of it for days. Her roommate asked if she should go to the hospital.

Whitney checked the thermometer. "No need. It should break by tomorrow." The high fever had dropped to a low one after she took some meds. But she was still feeling pretty woozy and lightheaded. She'd never expected that after half a year abroad, she'd finally experience what it was like to be sick and alone in a foreign country. Whitney really wanted to call Klein, but she was afraid he'd taunt her. She couldn't bring herself to call him. When one was sick, he would feel especially vulnerable.

She'd often take out their wedding photos, gazing at it as tears streamed down her face, losing track of how many times she'd cried. 'But this was my choice, Whitney thought, 'No matter how rough or exhausting it gets, I'll just have to tough it out on my own.' Klein caught Lena acting all secretive on the phone. "Lena, who were you just talking to?" Lena hid her phone, looking a bit guilty. "Oh, Uncle Klein! I wasn't talking to Whit, I swear." Klein raised his eyebrows. "You called her? Isn't she supposed to be in class or something right now?" Lena wanted to kick herself.

'Why can't I just keep my mouth shut? Seriously, do I ever think before I speak?' she cursed. "Oh, Uncle Klein, you really figured it out, huh?" Lena replied, a little embarrassed. Klein gave her a look like she was clueless. "Did Aunt Whitney say anything?" The people he'd arranged to watch over Whitney abroad had all headed back home for the New Year holiday. So for now, he really had no idea how Whitney was doing. "Nothing, Uncle Klein. Why are you eavesdropping on our call?" Klein frowned. "What nonsense are you talking? Are you and Dustin fighting again?

You're not going home?" Lena pouted. "Of course I am. I'll go home tomorrow night," she said. Klein walked away and immediately shot Dustin a message. [You'd better come pick up my niece tonight, or don't bother showing your face here ever again.] Dustin, who'd volunteered for the night shift at the hospital, felt his chest tighten when he saw the message. "Dr. Reed, you're not crashing at the hospital tonight?" someone asked. Everyone at the hospital knew their chief had gotten into a fight with his wife. Dustin pursed his lips and said, "Who said I was crashing here?

I just didn't want to keep running back and forth while on duty. Go do your rounds if you've got nothing better to do. Don't just stand here." That night, Lena was picked up by Dustin, though she was clearly reluctant to go. Klein just sat there, staring at his phone, deep in thought. He couldn't help himself. After all this time, for the first time ever, he actually picked up the phone and called Whitney. Whitney was so out of it, and she didn't even have the strength to pick up the phone.

Her roommate, worried sick, was just about to call an ambulance when she noticed Whitney's phone ringing on the bed. The caller ID said, "Husband". After a moment's hesitation, she answered for her. "Hello? Are you Whitney's husband? She's really sick. She's been running a fever for days, probably from some virus. I'm about to call for an ambulance right now," Klein's heart skipped a beat. "Wait, she's sick? How did that even happen?" he blurted out, disbelief and worry mixing in his voice. Then, realizing he was just making things worse, he quickly softened.

"Sorry, I just freaked out for a second. Could you help call an ambulance for her?" "I'll get there as soon as I can tomorrow." he added. Her roommate couldn't help but be curious. She hadn't seen Whitney's husband once in the past six months. She hadn't expected him to actually care this much about his wife. "Alright, no problem. Do you have the address?" the roommate asked. "Yeah. Thanks, I really appreciate it," Klein said. It was smack in the middle of the New Year holiday when Ryan got a call from Klein. Ryan really wished he could ignore the call, but he picked up anyway. "Hello, Mr.

Harris." "Get me on a flight out of the country right now. I'll pay you five times your usual rate for today. And find the best doctor abroad and get them to Whitney ASAP. She's got a virus and keeps running a fever. Quick!" Klein barked, his voice tight with urgency. Ryan had grumbled at first, but the second he heard about five times the pay, all his complaints vanished. He suddenly became the most diligent assistant ever. "Got it, Mr. Harris. I'll get right on it," he said, suddenly all business. Klein's expression was grim. 'When I get there, she's not getting off easy,' he thought.

'Seriously? She didn't even tell me she was sick?' Klein muttered to himself, annoyed. 'She's really asking for it, he grumbled. Whitney drifted in and out, the beeping of machines cutting through her haze. When she finally managed to crack her eyes open, all she saw was that generic hospital ceiling one could see everywhere. 'Hospital? Seriously?' she thought, still half out of it. 'Bet my roommate got me here,' she figured, her mind still fuzzy. She had no idea how long she'd been out, and her phone was nowhere to be found.

Just as she remembered, the door to her ward suddenly swung open, and her eyes widened in shock. 'Why is my husband here?' she thought, completely stunned. 'Is this a hallucination?' she wondered, her mind still hazy. She blinked hard, terrified that if she closed her eyes for even a second, the man in front of her would disappear. Klein pursed his lips and said coldly, "What, six months apart and you can't even recognize your own husband?" Whitney's pale face brightened with joy. "Klein!" She pinched him. When he frowned, she broke into a smile.

"Honey, it's really you!" Klein just stared at her, speechless. "You got sick and didn't even tell me? How are you gonna make this up to me?" he grumbled, half teasing, half annoyed. Whitney puffed up her cheeks, all aggrieved. "You're the one who said not to contact you, and now you're blaming me?" "I told you not to go abroad. Did you listen? Now you wanna act all obedient?" Klein shot back. "Whit, I just..." Klein started, his voice thick with emotion. He reached out and gave her a gentle smack on the butt.

Annoyed and worried, Klein said, "Damn, you've gotten so skinny." Whitney had been holding it together. But as soon as she heard that, she just broke down in tears. "Why did you take so long to come? I missed you so much, honey. Tell me, did some girl back home steal you away?" Whitney whimpered, her voice thick with tears. Klein let out a sigh, gently cupping her face and gave her a gentle peck on the forehead. "Nonsense." "From the very beginning, the only girl who ever stole my heart was you," he murmured, his voice low and tender. Chapter 177 55 Vouchers "Alright, enough with the tears.

You know I can't do anything when you cry like that. The doctor said your immune system's been down, so you caught a bug. Just focus on getting better these next few days, okay? No more classes until you're back on your feet, promise me?" "Okay," Whitney sobbed. "I promise." "Wow, you really outdid yourself. Six months away and you managed to lose every bit of weight I spent ages trying to put on you," Klein said, half teasing, half helpless. Whitney blinked, tears still in her eyes. "My waist and legs shrank a little, but my boobs are still the same." Klein just stared at her, speechless.

She was in the mood for jokes, huh? Klein told her to get some more rest, but Whitney clung tightly to his hand, her voice trembling. "Will you still be here when I wake up? You won't disappear, right?" With a gentle smile, Klein softly stroked her hair, his eyes full of worry and affection. "Of course not. When you open your eyes, I'll be right here." he said.
