Chapter 148 Three hours later, the surgery finally ended. The doctor walked up to Whitney with an apologetic look and said, "We got the patient here just in time, but the bleeding was pretty severe. That's probably tied to his usual diet and lifestyle, and then a sudden surge of emotion set it off." "Brain surgery is always risky, but we managed to pull it off. Still, because of the heavy blood loss, his recovery might be tough. Some patients end up with mobility issues, trouble speaking, or even memory or thinking problems.
Any of these could happen." "We'll need to wait 48 hours and see how he does before we figure out the next step." Whitney managed a faint smile and said, "Thank you, doctor." "You explained the risks to me beforehand, so there's no need to apologize." The doctor was a bit taken aback. He hadn't expected the patient's family to be so this calm and reasonable. For the next few days, Samuel would be under observation in the ICU. Whitney asked the butler to stay at the hospital, while Klein took her home, holding her close.
With Samuel down, the shareholders flooded Whitney with calls, desperate for her to do something. "Whitney, you're the biggest shareholder now. You have to figure something out," one of them pleaded. Whitney had no intention of stepping in, using his illness as the perfect excuse. "Just announce the bankruptcy," she said coldly. "There is nothing I can do. My dad's still in the ICU. I think bankruptcy is our only option." AetherTech officially entered bankruptcy proceedings, but Whitney kept working at the law firm, completely unfazed by it all.
When the hospital called to say Samuel had woken up, Whitney took some time off and went to see him. This time, she went without Klein. Just like the doctor said, Samuel struggled to choke out a few sounds, barely managing to call her name. Whitney said with a mocking smile, "The doctor said you're probably never going to get better. If you really try, maybe you'll improve a little, but a full recovery? That's pretty much impossible." "The company's already in bankruptcy. Everything except Moore Manor is being used to pay off the debts. Oh, those loan guarantees you signed?
They'll come straight out of your own pocket." "Well, Dad, there's nothing left for you now." Samuel's eyes were widened and lifeless, tears streaming down his face. Even sick in bed, the old fox tried to grab Whitney's hand, but she lightly pulled away. "Oh? You think you still have me?" "Sorry, but other than the basic monthly support I'm supposed to give you, you won't get a penny more from me." "You want your old life back? That's never happening. Is this the life you wanted?" "Ungrateful girl!" Samuel forced out, his voice rough and broken as he tried to curse her.

Even though his words were garbled, it was obvious he was very mad at her. Whitney scoffed, her tone icy. "Ungrateful? Really?" "But back then, when you let Laura mess with my mom and just turned a blind eye, did you ever think you'd end up like this?" "You won't die right away. Instead, you'll slowly waste away, watching yourself go from strong to weak, until you can't even handle the basics, eating, shitting, all of it. You'll need someone for every little thing." "You'll live without a shred of dignity, wishing you were dead every single day.
But I'll make sure there's always someone to take care of you, so you keep living, no matter how much you want to give up. Consider this my last act of revenge, Dad. Does this make you happy?" Samuel's face contorted with tears and sobs. In just a few days, his forehead was covered in wrinkles that hadn't been there before. ***** Whitney was surprised to see Klein waiting for her outside the ward. "You came," she said. 'Seriously, does he have me bugged or something? He always pops up right when I need him,' Whitney thought. Whitney parted her lips, not sure how much Klein had overheard.
She wanted to ask if he thought she was being too ruthless. She wasn't the kind to play the part of a dutiful daughter just because it was expected. Every time Samuel sided with Laura and Tina, he became less of a father in her heart. Eventually, every last drop of the fatherly love she'd had as a child was used up. When her grandma passed away, Samuel was completely indifferent, When Whitney finally learned the truth about her mom's death, her heart froze over, and all that was left was hatred. She wasn't some goody two-shoes.
If Klein ever saw the darkness in her bones, would he end up hating her? But Klein didn't say anything. He just smiled softly at her, his eyes gentle, "Hey, do you want to watch a movie tonight?" Whitney nodded and said, "Yeah." Klein showing up at the movie theater in a full-on suit was just... totally out of place. Especially with his arms loaded up with soda and popcorn. Whitney reached out to help, but Klein just shook his head and grinned. "Hey, this is boyfriend duty." he said. "If they can do it, so can I." Whitney blushed.
Every now and then, curious eyes would sneak glances their way. Whitney glanced at her watch. Ten minutes left before the movie. She got up and said, "I'm going to the bathroom." Klein raised his eyebrows. This was one trip he really had to sit out. "Go ahead," he said. As soon as she walked off, a few girls nearby couldn't help inching over. Klein gave them a warning look. "Whoa, hold up. I'm a married man, okay? My wife's super jealous. If you come any closer, she'll totally freak out and I'll never hear the end of it." The girls froze. "Sorry, we thought you were some celebrity.
We just wanted an autograph," one of them mumbled. With that, the girls bolted. He was seriously handsome, so they thought he might be a celebrity. They figured they'd take a shot and see if he'd sign something for them. If he really was famous, they'd totally score big. But in the end, it was just a hilarious mix-up. He was definitely handsome, but that cocky attitude of his just killed the charm for all three girls. 55 vouchers People nearby overheard everything and were trying their best not to burst out laughing.
Whitney jogged over, grabbed her bag from Klein's arm, and said, "Come on, let's go in. The movie's about to start." But as she glanced around suspiciously, she realized even more people were checking them out now. "Here, baby, eat," Klein said, holding the popcorn and feeding Whitney, totally spoiling her. The theater was dark, and they couldn't see each other's faces, so Whitney just let herself enjoy being pampered by him. While the ads were still rolling before the movie, the couple next to them started chatting, and Whitney and Klein couldn't help but overhear.
"Hey, baby, did you see that man earlier? It was hilarious. Those girls thought he was some celebrity and tried to get his autograph, but he just yelled, 'Don't come closer, I'm married! My wife's super jealous!"" "Haha, yeah, I heard it too. If his wife ever finds out he's out here calling her jealous, she'll totally flip out. Baby, I'm done being jealous of other girls' hot husbands. At least you're not that dramatic." Whitney froze. Klein just looked at her in silence. Whitney shot Klein a suspicious glance, lowering her voice.
"Don't tell me they were talking about you just now?" she said. Klein cleared his throat, trying to act all innocent. "Me? Honey, I'd never badmouth you like that. No way!" "Come on, have some popcorn. The movie's about to start," he said, eager to change the subject. Feeling guilty, he kept feeding her popcorn, hoping she'd drop the whole thing.
