Chapter 101 Whitney got a text from Joanne. [Whit, I heard you and Klein got married. Congratulations!] Whitney smiled as she replied. [Thanks. And you too. Of you have any good news, make sure to let me know.] Her relationship with Klein was way too complicated. She hadn't even told Lena much about it. After all, she got something out of it, so it wouldn't be cool to go around telling people it was just a marriage of convenience. But Whitney had no idea she'd just hit Joanne right where it hurt. [Whit, I broke up with Oliver.] 'Break up? For real?' Whitney thought, totally caught off guard.
She was clueless. Oliver looked so relaxed after the wedding. He didn't look like he'd just gone through a breakup. She called Joanne right away, but Joanne declined the call. [Whit, I can't talk right now. I'll tell you everything later. Klein's not like Oliver, but I just have to say this. Look out for yourself, okay? Don't go all in like I did.] [If you put in too much, you're the one who ends up hurt.] Whitney had no idea what had happened between Joanne and Oliver, but she was 100% on Joanne's side, no matter what. [I know. Don't worry about me.
Let's hang out when you've got time.] After the chat, Whitney scrolled through X and saw the trending topics. She finally got why Joanne and Oliver broke up. Whitney never really had a great impression of Oliver. They ran in different circles and never really crossed paths. Now she realized he was just a playboy. 'If he's already got an engagement on the table, why did he have to mess with Joanne?' Whitney thought, annoyed. The first time she saw Oliver and Joanne together, she had thought they looked like a solid couple. But it turned out to be just an illusion.
As for Whitney, she was even less likely to lose herself in a romantic relationship now. Klein had no clue that everything he'd worked for had just been undone in the weirdest way. The next morning, at PrimeBridge Law Firm, Whitney had just walked in when Ivan waved her over. "Let's go, Whit! Grab your laptop. We're heading to Harris Group," Ivan said, halfway out the door. Whitney flashed him a grin and said, "On it, Boss!" As they rushed toward the parking lot, Ivan explained, "Calvin just hit me up.
There's an issue with the merger agreement and he needs us over there, pronto!" "Got it!" Whitney replied. Ivan caught how tense Whitney looked and grinned, trying to calm her down. "Hey, don't stress. It's no big deal. The accounting firm just wants to fix up a couple of points in the agreement." he said. It was her first time being part of a merger this huge, so of course she was a bit nervous. "Yeah, a little. But don't worry, Boss. Once I get through this, I won't be so nervous next time," Whitney said. "Oh, I heard some juicy gossip. At Carter's wedding yesterday, Mr.
Harris brought his fiancée along!" Ivan said, grinning. "Well, she's not really his fiancée anymore. Word is, they already got married, just waiting on the actual wedding now!" Ivan continued. "That totally blew up their social circle! I bet a bunch of those rich heiresses are heartbroken right now," Ivan added. "Oh, really?" Whitney said, forcing a smile. 'Great, now I'm the center of the drama,' she thought, feeling awkward. Having the spotlight of gossip land on herself felt pretty uncomfortable.

Ivan suddenly switched gears and said, "Whit, have you ever thought about finding yourself a new boyfriend?" "If you don't have anyone in mind, I know plenty of single young men. There's this 29-year-old prosecutor. He's pretty great. I heard he's single when I was in court last time," Ivan said, grinning. "Boss, please, don't set me up with anyone!" Whitney pleaded. She was married, but she couldn't tell anyone. So all her excuses for turning him down just sounded weak. Seeing her resistance, Ivan just let it go.
People get older and suddenly they love playing matchmaker for every single person around. Everyone got a kick out of playing cupid, man or woman. After parking, they made their way to their usual conference room, where the accountants were already there. Whitney dove right into work. Calvin swung by around 10:30 to check on their progress, and looked pretty happy with how the agreement turned out. During the break, Ivan and Calvin chatted idly about this and that. But Ivan couldn't help noticing that Calvin kept glancing over at Whitney every now and then.
'Oh no, Calvin's got a thing for Whit!' Ivan thought, feeling a headache coming on. Ivan changed the subject with a friendly smile, "Hey, Calvin, I heard your baby just turned a month old. Are you planning a party?" Calvin smiled and said "Oh, that? We'll throw a party when the baby gets older. Nothing fancy, just a casual dinner party with family." Ivan honestly didn't care about the party thing. He was just trying to remind Calvin. 'Dude, you're a dad now, so don't go catching feelings you shouldn't.' "Yeah, keeping it low-key is nice. It's just a tradition anyway," Ivan chuckled.
Too bad Calvin didn't pick up on the hint. Ivan noticed the way Calvin kept sneaking glances at Whitney, like he didn't even care who saw. 'Man, this guy's not even trying to hide it,' Ivan thought. He stood up and said, "Calvin, wanna step out for a smoke?" Calvin finally looked away, having no clue what Ivan was thinking. He just smiled and said, "Sure." They headed to the stairwell, which was the company's designated smoking area. Ivan lit up a cigarette for him and said, "Lucky you, Calvin. You've got a solid career and a kid.
Looks like you've got it all together." Calvin just smiled and said, "Not bad, I guess." He knew Ivan was divorced, so he kept things casual and didn't get into it. But he noticed Ivan was unusually lively today, way more energetic than usual. "I'm 40 now, so I'm past all that. But I don't get why even the younger people aren't interested these days. Take Whit, for example. She got burned by some jerk and she's still not over it. I was thinking of introducing her to a few decent young men and help her get back on her feet," Ivan said. "She's really pure-hearted.
She couldn't handle getting hurt again," Ivan added, sounding genuinely concerned. Calvin froze, his hand holding the cigarette mid-air. 'Why does Ivan's vibe feel so off today?' he wondered, a little thrown. 'Is he getting the wrong idea or something?' Calvin wondered. Calvin rolled his eyes secretly. 'Pretty sure Ivan thinks I'm some perv checking out Whit, he thought. 'My wife's gorgeous too, like I'd ever need to do that, he scoffed. But Calvin couldn't really explain. Honestly, he was just trying to suck up to his boss's wife. She was the real deal, Mrs. Harris!
'What do they even know?' Calvin thought, rolling his eyes. By the time they got back from their smoke, Whitney had already finished coordinating with the accountants. Calvin said that Klein needed to sign off, so they could head out for now. Calvin grabbed the documents and headed over to Klein's office for him to take a look. Klein didn't even look up from his paperwork. "Just leave it there," he said, still signing away. Calvin carefully set the documents down on the corner of Klein's desk and said, "Mr. Harris, the people of PrimeBridge Law Firm dropped by today." Klein's pen paused.
'What? She didn't say anything about that when we left the house this morning,' he thought, a little surprised. He nodded, keeping his cool, and said, "Yeah, I know. Is this urgent?" "Not really. Once you've reviewed it, we'll get the next steps rolling," Calvin replied. Klein set his pen down, picked up the documents, and flipped through a few pages. Then, he suddenly looked up and asked, "Are they still here?" It was obvious who he was talking about. "Yes, Boss. I told them to hang around for a bit," Calvin said.
"Oh, by the way, while I was chatting with Ivan, he said he knows some hotshot young prosecutor and wants to introduce him to Whitney..." Calvin added, sounding a little gossipy. "What?" Klein snapped. Klein raised his eyebrows, looking lazy but with a dangerous edge. 'Is Ivan seriously trying to set my wife up with another man and get me cuckolded?' Klein thought, quite unhappy.
