Chapter 163 Klein's face darkened when he realized what his wife wanted to look into. "So that wasn't a scam call earlier. Someone was threatening you?" he asked. Whitney nodded and said, "Yeah. They were probably just trying to scare me, not actually planning to do anything." The evidence was so overwhelming today that they didn't even have an excuse to argue back. Some defendants would either try to bribe plaintiff attorneys who were weak-willed or greedy, or threaten those who couldn't be bought off. It was especially common in medical cases.
That was why Arthur had told her last time that he stopped taking cases for patients and switched to representing hospitals instead, which was way less stressful. If it weren't for legal aid, she probably wouldn't have taken the case either. But since she had, she was determined to fight for her client to the very end. "Alright, I'll get someone on it right away. Just hang tight," Klein said. Within half an hour, Klein sent the information to Whitney's email. As expected, it was Andrew who made the threatening call earlier using a friend's number. He had some connections in the medical world.
Not only did he work with one hospital, but he also saw patients at three different regional hospitals, just on different days. After getting the info, Whitney called the boss of the medical company backing Andrew. "Mr. White, about you sending someone to threaten me today, if you don't want this exposed, you'd better watch your step. PrimeBridge Law Firm isn't some no-name firm, and the city's anti-corruption campaign hasn't let up. Don't think you'll get away with it." With that, she hung up without waiting for a response. For the next two weeks, everything seemed to be going smoothly.
The court accepted their case, and the hospital stopped hassling Nancy about discharging her son. But then, one day, the court clerk called Whitney to remind her to finish the paperwork for dropping the case. Whitney blinked, confused, "Wait, what do you mean, dropping the case?" "Oh, you didn't know?" the clerk said. "The client's mother came in and asked to withdraw the lawsuit. She said she's already reached a private settlement with the hospital." Chapter 163 6 youcher Whitney was stunned, like she'd just been hit by a bolt of lightning.
She immediately tried calling Nancy, but Nancy didn't pick up. Ivan glanced over at Whitney, noticing how her expression changed. He couldn't help but ask, "What's going on?" Whitney felt a mix of emotions. "The client from the legal aid case just dropped the lawsuit." "She dropped the case? Wasn't this a sure win?" Ivan blurted out in disbelief. Whitney grabbed her bag and said, "Boss, I'm heading to the hospital." When Whitney arrived at the hospital, she saw that Gary's old room already had a new patient in it. Whitney furrowed her brows and went up to the head nurse.
"Has Gary from bed 18 been discharged?" "Yeah, he left five days ago. You didn't know?" the nurse replied. Whitney honestly had no idea. She stood outside the hospital and called Nancy again. This time, Nancy finally answered. "Nancy, did you really go to the court and withdraw the case?" Whitney asked. "Ms. Moore, I'm really sorry. I called the judge myself and told them I wanted to drop the case," Nancy said. Whitney couldn't wrap her head around it. "Why?" she asked. Nancy, her voice heavy with her accent, said, "I'm sorry, Ms. Moore.

I just don't want to go through with this lawsuit." "The hospital told me the lawsuit could drag on for ages. You were saying we're likely to win, but what if we lose after all? The doctor offered me 70,000 dollars, and I want to use that money to get Gary the treatment he needs," Nancy explained. "Gary's condition can't wait. If we miss the window for treatment, my son won't survive," Nancy added, her voice trembling. 70,000 dollars. Whitney took a deep breath. If they saw this lawsuit through, the hospital would be held fully liable.
Gary was barely thirty, and being in a vegetative state meant he was classified as severely disabled. The medical expenses, disability compensation, nursing care, and nutrition costs alone would be no small sum. All together, it would be way more than 70,000 dollars. Whitney couldn't bear to think how fast that 70,000 dollars would disappear if Gary ended up in a big hospital. But now that they'd reached a private settlement, taking legal action again would be next to impossible. Whitney sighed, her voice soft with concern.
"Nancy, how's Gary holding up these days?" "He's still in treatment, but the doctors aren't very hopeful," Nancy said. "Nancy, just focus on taking care of Gary for now, alright? Try not to worry about anything else," Whitney said gently. Nancy kept apologizing, "I'm so sorry, Ms. Moore. We just don't have any money. I was so afraid they'd throw us out of the hospital. If we lost the lawsuit, we'd be left with nothing. I have to get Gary the treatment he needs!" "Nancy, I understand. Let's not think too much about anything else right now.
Just focus on getting Gary the care he needs," Whitney said softly. With the settlement signed, Whitney could only do her best to comfort her. After she hung up, Whitney just felt awful. It wasn't the fact that the case was dropped, but knowing victory was right there, within reach. If only she'd been present for the settlement, maybe she could've gotten Nancy a much better deal. 70,000 dollars... It was nowhere near enough. All she could do now was hope for a miracle, that Nancy's son might wake up someday. ***** Whitney didn't go back to the firm. She just headed straight home.
When Klein got home, he didn't see Whitney in the dining room. "Where's Whitney?" he asked. Martin came in and said, "Mr. Harris, Mrs. Harris seemed pretty down today. She went straight upstairs as soon as she got home." 'Bad mood?' Klein thought to himself. She'd mentioned a few days ago that the case was going smoothly. 'Did something go wrong?' he wondered. Klein headed upstairs. The study was empty, which meant she was probably in the bedroom. He pushed open the bedroom door. The curtains were drawn tight, and the room was dark. He carefully made his way to the bed.
"Whitney?" he called softly. He could just make out her face, her brows deeply furrowed in her sleep. voucher Klein reached out, trying to smooth the worry from her brow, but then he noticed a tear slipping from the corner of her eye. 'Why is she crying in her sleep? What kind of dream is haunting her?' Klein thought, his heart aching Whitney had a long, restless dream that night. In the dream, she kept running, someone always on her heels. The red ribbon marking the finish line was right there in front of her, but no matter how fast she pushed herself, she just couldn't cross it.
When she woke up, she saw it was three in the morning. As soon as she sat up, Klein woke up too. "What's wrong? Did you have a nightmare?" Klein asked, concern in his voice. Whitney shook her head, still half-asleep. "No, just a dream." It wasn't a nightmare, but it sure wasn't a happy dream either. "It wasn't a nightmare? But you were crying last night," Klein said gently. Whitney subconsciously reached up to wipe away the tears at the corner of her eye. "It's fine, I was just crying in my sleep." she said. Klein pulled her into his arms and kissed the corner of her eye.
"It's still carly, honey. Try to get some more sleep." "Whatever's bothering you, let your man handle it tomorrow, okay?" he murmured, holding her closer. Whitney couldn't help but chuckle. "Klein, you're making me look totally helpless," she joked. Klein raised his eyebrows and said,"If you don't lean on your husband, who else are you gonna lean on?" It was hard to argue with that logic. Whitney smiled, curling up in his arms, finally feeling at peace. "Yeah, let's get some sleep." "Goodnight, Klein," she murmured.
