Chapter 109 Whitney thought to herself, 'I really shouldn't have come to dinner tonight. 'I need to have a serious talk with Ivan when I get back. 'I told him I wasn't doing blind dates anymore. Why did he still set me up with someone?' Felix seemed to notice her discomfort and tried to put her at case, "Don't mind them. They're just messing around. Are you a criminal defense lawyer?" Whitney shook her head and said, "No, I work in civil law. I also handle some corporate matters outside of court." Felix glanced at her, noticing how young she was but still so impressive.

It only made him more drawn to her. "I'm only a few years older than you, so just call me Felix, like my cousin." Whitney cringed. 'Seriously? We just met.' Just as Whitney's smile was about to slip, there suddenly came a cold and indifferent voice from behind. "Mr. Walton, what a coincidence. Is your company having a team-building event?" Whitney looked up sharply. The moment her gaze met those cold eyes, her heart tightened. "Mr. Harris?" Ivan shot up from his seat, looking genuinely surprised. "Mr.

Harris, it's not really a team- building thing, just a casual hangout with some fellow lawyers." "Haha, looks like you guys hit the jackpot tonight. This is Mr. Harris, President of Harris Group. Mr. Harris, these are my old classmates and they're all lawyers too." Mr. Lawson and his friend, both lawyers, quickly stood up as well. Of course they'd heard of Harris Group, and they'd seen Klein's cold, chiseled face from afar before. But they'd never been this close to Klein in person. "Mr. Harris, nice to meet you!" "Mr.

Harris, I've heard so much about you!" Whitney froze, completely dumbfounded. 'Why on earth is he here?' Klein's deep, cold eyes swept over the group, his eyebrows raised with casual indifference. "Hey, Mr. Walton, is he a lawyer too?" he asked. He gestured gracefully, his long fingers landing right on Felix. Felix was young, but he picked up on Klein's cold vibe right away. He kept his cool, not backing down. "Mr. Harris, I've heard a lot about you. I'm Felix Dickson, just prosecutor." he said. His words sounded polite enough.

But if one listened carefully, he could catch a trace of sarcasm underneath. Maybe it was just his job, but he'd never really liked those rich kids and trust fund brats. He'd heard of Harris Group, but he just figured Klein was that Harris boy who was always blowing up online. "Oh," Klein gave him a long, cold glance. "A prosecutor, huh." "So young to be a prosecutor... that's impressive." "Quite accomplished for someone your age." It was clearly meant as praise, but his tone was cold. Whitney snuck a look at Klein. Before she knew it, their eyes locked.

In those intense, deep eyes of his, she could even make out her own silhouette reflected back at her. Ivan, ever the smooth talker, instantly sensed something was off with Klein tonight and jumped in to break the tension. "Yeah, he's really impressive for his age. Mr. Harris, are you eating here too? Want to grab a seat and chat for a while?" he said. He was just being polite. He totally didn't expect Klein to actually take him up on it. Whitney quickly lowered her head, repeating to herself, 'Don't say yes. Please don't...' But of course, luck wasn't on her side tonight.

"Sure, it'd be my honor to join all you accomplished folks for dinner," Klein said, his voice as cold and distant as ever. Whitney just stared, lost for words. She gave up and looked away, praying in her head, 'Please, just sit far away from me...' Ivan scanned the table, planning to offer Klein the head seat, but Klein wasn't bothered with formalities at all. With a lazy wave of his hand, Klein said, "No need to fuss. I'll just take Mr. Walton's spot. Mr. Walton, would you mind sitting somewhere else?" Whitney froze. 'Can someone just kill me now?

Maybe that'll give them a good laugh,' she thought, dying from embarrassment. Ivan blinked in surprise again. "Alright then, Mr. Harris. Hope you don't mind squeezing in here." "Not at all," Klein said with a meaningful smile. "I'm more than happy to." The lawyers all started talking about Klein instead of Felix. He was the center of attention now. And Whitney was sitting right next to the main attraction. She kept her head down, quietly eating, hoping no one would drag her into the conversation or put her on the spot.

She wished she could just fly under the radar and get through the night in peace. As luck would have it, Felix, now bumped down to a supporting role, started trying to make himself noticed again. Felix, ever the gentleman, leaned over and offered, "Want some fish?" as he helpfully placed a piece on her plate. Whitney felt a chill down her spine. She could feel Klein's cold stare boring into her without even looking up. "No, thanks, Felix, you have it," she said quickly, trying to politely refuse. "It's all good, Whitney, try it." Felix said, still trying to get closer.

'Not now!' Whitney was screaming deep down. Klein raised his eyebrows, thinking, 'Is he trying to hit on her or something?' He signaled to the waiter and said," Could you bring a few more forks? It's more hygienic that way." Felix's eye twitched. He could tell Klein was giving him a hard time, even if it was just between the lines. "Oh, sorry about that. I should've thought of it," Felix forced a smile, trying to brush it off. Felix grabbed a clean fork and put a piece of beef on Whitney's plate. "Try this. I think it's pretty good." he said. "Come on, you're not eating enough.

Have some more," he said, sounding genuinely concerned. Klein said with a sneer, "Mr. Dickson, who knew you could be so considerate?" Then, without missing a beat, he suddenly changed the subject and said, "Well, Mr. Dickson, how old is your kid? Already in elementary school?" Felix's face darkened. With a lazy, almost taunting tone, Klein said, "Oh, not elementary? What, middle school then?" Felix forced a smile and said awkwardly, "Mr. Harris, you're kidding. I'm still single." "Really? Not even with a girlfriend?" Klein continued, his words laced with teasing.

Felix barely managed a reply, his jaw tight, "No." "Huh, that's quite unexpected. Sorry, I just thought, with your age, you'd be married already," Klein said, sounding almost surprised. Now Felix was dead certain. Klein was straight-up targeting him. 'Hold up. is he into Whitney too?' Felix thought, the suspicion suddenly hitting him. Felix glanced over, his voice low and almost casual, "So, Mr. Harris, I take it you're married?" Ivan was on edge, his nerves stretched tight as he listened to the verbal sparring between the two. "Oh, Mr.

Harris..." Ivan tried to break the tension, but Klein just gave a subtle, knowing smile. Klein ran his thumb over the ring on his finger, his tone calm and unhurried. "Yeah, I'm married." he said. Then, as his eyes flicked to Whitney's hand, his gaze grew colder. "What about you, Ms. Moore? Are you married?" he said. Whitney's heart skipped a beat. 'Well, looks like I'm in the hot seat now,' she thought, bracing herself. She pursed her lips, forcing a smile. "Yeah, I just got married." she said.

Between pissing off Ivan and pissing off Klein, Whitney could only send a silent apology to Ivan in her head. AD Comment Send gift No Ads Dex Morgan Dex Morgan works to elevate each story with clean writing, emotional balance, and thoughtful flow for readers.
