Chapter 159 Sadly, there was no cure for regret in this world. After coming back home, Whitney and Klein were both swamped with work. It took them a full two weeks to sort through all the piled-up work. It had been a month since Whitney last went back to Harris Manor, and she knew she couldn't keep putting it off. As soon as she walked in, she was greeted by Sabrina, who was smiling at her with a smug look on her face. Whitney raised her eyebrows slightly. 'What's she playing at?' she wondered. She soon found out what Sabrina was up to. At the dinner table, Sabrina could hardly hide her joy.
"Dad, there's something to celebrate in the family!" she announced. James nodded flatly. "If it's good news, just spit it out." He was honestly getting tired of Sabrina's constant need to act all dramatic. Sabrina was totally unfazed by James's attitude, her face beaming with excitement. "Carter doesn't even know about this yet!" "Carter, Emily called me today and said she hasn't been feeling well lately. If I remember right, you visited her just last month, didn't you? So I suggested she book a check-up with her private doctor," Sabrina said, deliberately pausing for a few seconds.
"And guess what? Emily told me she's already four weeks pregnant!" Carter froze for a second, totally lost. 'Emily's pregnant?' he thought. 'Wait, am I going to be a dad?' Carter was still trying to wrap his head around it. "Carter, you look so happy and shocked!" Sabrina teased. George was taken aback because his wife had even kept him in the dark about this. "That's great news!" George said. Klein ate slowly, looking nonchalant. "It is good news, indeed." But about Emily's return, Klein didn't mention it at all. James felt a warm surge of joy in his heart.
"That's great, really great!" he said. "Sabrina, could you spend more time with Emily and keep her company? Help her relax and keep her spirits up while she's expecting," James added. Sabrina's smile froze. 'Seriously? They're really not going to let Emily come back?' she thought in disbelief. 'Great, now I look like an idiot after promising Emily I'd figure out a way to get her home today, Sabrina thought, feeling a wave of guilt. "Dad, of course I don't mind spending more time with her," Sabrina said, forcing a smile. "But you know how emotional pregnant women can get.
Emily really needs Carter around to feel safe and comfortable." Whitney picked up on Sabrina's real intention. She was clearly trying to get James to agree to let Emily come back. But her hopes were dashed. James didn't respond. Klein cut in, his voice calm, "Sabrina, I told you before she went abroad. Pregnant or not, she's having the baby overseas. Don't tell me you forgot." Sabrina was simmering with frustration, but managed a smile. "Come on, Klein, do you really have to be so harsh? Sure, Emily messed up last time, but she's been trying to make up for it.
It's not easy for her, you know, being pregnant and all alone in a foreign country," Seeing Klein wasn't budging, Sabrina turned to Whitney. "Whit, I've always been good to you, haven't I? Are you really okay with seeing my daughter go through all this?" "You're going to be a mom yourself one day, right? Can't you show a little empathy?" Sabrina pleaded. Klein set down his fork and looked at James, who was sitting at the head of the table. "Dad, honestly, dinner here just keeps getting worse. I'm heading out. If Sabrina's dead set on this, there's nothing I can do to stop her.

But if that's the case, maybe Carter should be reassigned to a lower-level job at the company. Family comes first, right? I'll make it easier for him," Klein said. 'Demote a subsidiary CEO to a rank-and-file employee?' Sabrina thought, her mind spinning. 'My son is the Harris family's bloodline heir! How dare they treat him like this?' Sabrina fumed. The vibe in Harris Manor instantly turned cold. Carter felt utterly humiliated. He'd never hated being just the powerless CEO of a subsidiary as much as he did today. 'If only I had some shares in the company.
If only I could stand on equal ground with Uncle Klein,' Carter thought, bitterness flooding his chest. 'Would I finally get a real say in this family?' he gritted. James caught the unfathomable look in Carter's eyes, along with a glimmer of ambition that flashed across his face. 'This is going to be tricky, James mused. "We settled this before. Just because she's pregnant doesn't mean her past mistakes never happened," James said. "Sabrina, you're both Emily's adoptive mother and her mother-in-law. If there are things we can't say, isn't that your job to handle?" James added.
"Tell her to stop scheming. The Harris family isn't short on kids," James said. James really stressed the words "adoptive mother". Sabrina heard the warning loud and clear. She didn't push any further. "Yes, Dad. I understand," Sabrina replied. Dinner broke up in awkward silence, with everyone leaving the table in a foul mood. Lena linked arms with Whitney and walked around the garden. "Whit, seriously, how lucky can she get? Carter visited her just once and bam, she got pregnant," Lena said, half-joking and half amazed.
"And talk about timing, she found out she's pregnant right at the four-week mark. Isn't that a little too perfect? Feels kinda fishy if you ask me," Lena added, her tone full of gossip. Lena was honestly fed up with Emily. "I'm not even planning to invite her to my wedding. If she comes back, it'll be hard trying to get rid of her again." Whitney just had this gut feeling that Emily wouldn't stay much longer abroad. No matter how hard Klein tried to stop her, what if she just decided to come back anyway? But Whitney kept that thought to herself.
"Lena, how's your wedding dress shopping?" Whitney asked. Lena blushed. "Dustin picked it out for me." Whitney squinted playfully and teased, "Hold up, what's this? We've barely been apart, and suddenly you two made progress?" "Oh, come on, it's nothing serious. He just had a few dresses custom-made for me, all in the styles I like. They're still being designed. Honestly, he's actually kinda nice," Lena said. 'Actually, he's more than just nice. He's surprisingly sweet,' Lena thought, a little caught off guard by how thoughtful he was.
EX 56 vouchers Whitney caught sight of the massive rock on Lena's ring finger and shot her a teasing grin. "Wow, not bad at all. That ring's gotta be worth at least eight figures, huh?" "Alright, Whit, can we please stop talking about me?" Lena protested, blushing even more. Lena was clearly embarrassed. "Are you going to your mom's wedding tomorrow?" Whitney asked. Lena's expression turned cold. "No." "Whit, I don't want to go," Lena said. Whitney nodded with a sigh. There were things they had to work through on their own.
Even as Lena's closest friend, Whitney knew there wasn't much she could do to help. "Yeah, if you don't feel like going, then just don't go. Lena, your happiness is what matters most," Whitney said softly. Lena's grin turned mischievous as she nudged Whitney. "So, Whit, how did that office outfit go last time? Was it spicy enough for you?" Whitney blushed. "Hey! What are you even talking about? I seriously have no clue!" "Well, Whit, you and Uncle Klein got any baby plans for this year?" Lena teased, giving her a playful wink. Whitney froze, caught off guard.
Klein had never actually mentioned having kids, and they had always made sure to use protection. 'Guess he's not in a rush either,' Whitney thought. She shook her head and said, "Not yet. I'm aiming for a promotion next year, so a baby isn't really part of our plans right now." A baby would totally mess up all her plans. Three whole years, and she'd basically have to put her life on hold. So even though Whitney never really respected Emily, she had to admit that Emily was the kind of pampered wife who lived to depend on her husband.
If Emily didn't keep messing with her, she could've just enjoyed her own peaceful life. But when had Emily ever not tried to stir things up? When Emily heard her mom say she'd have to stay overseas at least until the baby was born, her heart sank. "Emily, hold on. Carter's really thrilled about your pregnancy. He's right here with me. Let me hand the phone to him," Sabrina said gently. Emily's voice trembled with sadness. "Carter..." she said, deflated. "Emily, don't stress yourself out. You gotta keep your spirits up for the baby.
Once things get done here, I'll come see you next month, Carter said softly, "I promise I'll fly out to see you every single month, alright?" Carter added, trying to sound reassuring.
