Chapter 174 Whitney was scared stiff. She stammered nervously, "You know?" "Yeah." Klein said. Klein had spent two hours outside, trying to calm himself down before coming back. During those two hours, he'd had someone look into her exam results. The test had taken place on that Saturday, the day she'd claimed to be working overtime. She hadn't told him. The results had come out three days ago, and she still hadn't said a word. If she didn't bring it up today, when was she planning to? 'Was she going to wait until the day she left the country?' Klein thought bitterly.
Ever since he came back from abroad, he had worked tirelessly, carefully orchestrating every move to make this marriage happen. Every time Whitney said she missed him, he'd stare at her message for ages, letting every word sink in. He remembered how she had called him "Uncle Klein" at first, and then switched to the awkward but polite "Klein". Now she just called him honey in bed sometimes. 'Were all those little changes just for show?' Klein thought. 'Is there really no room for me in her heart?' Klein could get hurt too. He wasn't born tough.
He just learned to process his feelings faster than most. Whenever it came to Whitney, Klein would obsess over every tiny thing, making sure nothing slipped through the cracks. He'd doted on her like a father, giving her all the warmth and affection he could muster. But he'd never had the courage to wonder, let alone ask, if the fondness she showed him had ever blossomed into real love. Whenever she faced trouble, he'd never been the one she turned to. He'd patiently tried to change the way she thought, but she still couldn't fully trust him. Klein's voice was rough.
"Whitney, how much longer will it take for you to truly trust me? To treat me as the one you can always count on?" Chapter 174 Whitney caught the tremor in his voice. She teared up. "I'm sorry. I wasn't planning to keep it from you. I was going to tell you today." "I wasn't trying to keep it from you. It's just..." 55 vouchers Klein sneered and said, "So, what is it? Are you scared I'll stand in your way, keep you from going abroad? Afraid I'll mess up your future? Or do you just see me as some obstacle on your path to success?" His tone was getting sharper, almost biting.
Whitney panicked, shaking her head desperately. "No, that's not it. Klein, please, let me explain." But when she met his cold gaze, her heart ached. "If you'd told me sooner, you wouldn't have to explain yourself now," Klein said coldly. With a cold face, Klein hoisted her over his shoulder and strode straight inside. When they reached the couch, he frowned and said, "I told you to wear shoes." Whitney could see he was shutting her out, and a sudden panic gripped her. She grabbed his hand, pleading, "Klein, please don't go. I'm so sorry.
Can we just sit down and talk?" "No," Klein said coldly, pulling his hand free and heading upstairs. Whitney sat there, feeling like she'd really screwed up this time. All her plans were in shambles now. She'd blown everything. Tears poured down her cheeks as she sat alone downstairs, hugging her knees, her clothes wet from crying so hard. Klein did notice the cold dishes laid out on the table, and the flowers sitting there. He was just too pissed off. He planned to sulk for a couple of minutes.
But as soon as he got upstairs and dropped his suitcase, all he could think about was her teary yes. He cursed himself and rushed back downstairs. Klein saw Whitney curled up on the couch, her slender body hunched over with her head buried in her knees. His heart clenched painfully for her. 'Man, Klein, you're hopelessly gone for her. For life,' he thought bitterly. "Stop crying," Klein said gently. Whitney's tear-streaked face snapped up at the sound of his low voice above. She choked out, "You didn't leave." Klein let out a sigh and gently gathered her onto his lap.
He took a tissue from the coffee table and carefully wiped away her tears, putting on a stern face. "I'm not even crying. Why are you crying?" Whitney was crying so hard that she couldn't stop, her sobs wracking her body. "I just... I just feel awful. I didn't mean to, honey, I swear I didn't mean to keep it from you." "Whitney, I don't like it when you say sorry. I don't like it when you thank me, either. Every time you say those things, it just makes me feel like I'm on the outside, like you won't let me into your world," Klein said, his voice low and sad.

"What I do love is when you smile at me and talk to me, when you call me 'honey, or even when you shout my name madly. I want to be the first person you think of when things get tough. I don't want you to shoulder everything alone," he added, his tone softening. "I wish..." Klein paused for a few seconds, the words catching in his throat. He swallowed them back down. "Wish what?" Whitney asked, her swollen eyes blinking up at him, her voice choked with tears. Klein's pride wouldn't let him say it. "Figure it out yourself." After ten minutes, things finally calmed down.
Whitney's tears had dried up. "How did you find out?" "Carter came to the airport to see me today," Klein said. Whitney was fuming. 'No wonder he was so pissed,' she thought. 'Carter's seriously messed up,' she fumed. "I didn't tell him anything," Whitney explained. "When my paper results came in, they got sent to the law firm, and Gina opened them. She's always had it out for me, so I bet she went straight to Carter with it. Now the contract for Starwave Entertainment is in her team's hands." Klein gave her cheek a firm pinch, pretending to be fierce.
"If you ever tell him before me and keep me in the dark, you're so done for!" No matter how much Carter tried to stir up trouble, Klein trusted Whitney enough to always check things out for himself. He'd never fall for any of Carter's nonsense. "So, what do you want to do? Did you already choose a college? How long will you be gone?" Klein asked. Whitney sniffled, scrunching up her face. "I was going to tell you today. I even put flower petals at the door for but you didn't even notice." you, Her sweet, soft voice was exactly Klein's weakness. His heart melted.
"And that day, I wouldn't let you touch my bag because I'd gone to the bookstore to buy cookbooks. I spent days practicing recipes for you while you were on your business trip. Now the food's gone cold..." Whitney said, her voice soft and a little pouty. Klein gave her cheek another gentle pinch. "So sentimental." Then he walked over to the dining table, settled her on his lap, and just watched her sniffling and nibbling away in his arms. "It's cold. Let me warm it up for you," Whitney said as she reached for the food. Klein swatted her hand away. "Don't block me.
I want to enjoy the meal my wife made for me." Whitney didn't know what to say. Whitney couldn't help but wonder. Had they really made up? 'Guess we're not fighting anymore?' she thought, a little uncertain. "Klein, you're honestly the best person I've ever met. I thought I was getting better. But after Nancy's case, I realized I still had so much to work on. Maybe there's something off with me, and I just can't fix it by myself. I want to further my studies, become a better me, so I can finally be good enough for you," Whitney said, her voice soft and trembling.
Klein set down his fork and grabbed a napkin to wipe his mouth. "Who said you're not good enough for me? Which idiot's been talking crap?" he snapped. Whitney took his hand and shook her head. "No one said that. It's just... everything I have now is because of you. If you ever take it all away, then I'd have nothing left." Klein gritted his teeth and flicked her forehead hard. "Seriously, what kind of crazy stuff do you keep cooking up in that little head of yours?" "Bottom line is, you just don't trust me," he muttered, sounding a little hurt.
'Once bitten, twice shy...' Whitney thought, her heart still a little guarded. Whitney was quiet for a moment before finally speaking up, "I trust you right now. But Klein, do you really want someone who leans on you for everything, who's clueless and helpless without you?" "I want to be better, to be the kind of person I actually like. Just give me one year, okay? Every time I get a break, I'll fly straight back to see you. And when I come home for good, we'll have a baby together," she said, her voice soft and full of hope.
Klein let out a soft snort and said, "You really think you'll be ready for a baby when you get back? That'll be right when your career is taking off. We can talk about kids later. I'm willing to let you go abroad, but Whitney, you have to promise me one thing." Whitney tilted her head, looking at him. "What is it?" "If you want to be independent and to grow, I'll support you. I've always wanted to be your safe harbor, but I also hope you can become strong enough to protect yourself," Klein said, his voice steady. "This time, when you go abroad, don't come back for the holidays.
I won't visit you either. For a whole year, I won't give you any help with your life over there. I'll give you all the space you need to stand on your own." "I'll be right here waiting for you. You can fly as far as you want, run as fast as you like. When you come back in a year, I'll still be here," Klein promised, his voice gentle but unwavering. Klein had his pride, too. If his girl wanted to grow, he could wait for her. "Consider this your punishment for hiding things from me, okay?" he said, half teasing, half serious. It was a punishment for her, but also for himself. Whitney pouted.
"What about phone calls? You're really not going to call me at all?" "Nope," Klein replied flatly. "Klein, you're not secretly planning to find someone else while I'm gone, are you?" Whitney teased, half- joking, half-suspicious. She kept talking and Klein silenced her with a kiss. This time, his kiss was rough and intense, his eyes tinged red. "Say that again and I'll kiss you more." "Whitney, there's never been anyone else. Only you. This is my punishment for you," he said, voice low and serious. "Are you scared?" Klein whispered, gently kissing the corner of her lips.
"If you are, just stay here with me, okay?" "I'm not scared at all," Whitney said, her eyes full of hope and determination. "Klein, I'm not scared. If you ever cheat on me, I'll take half your assets and dump you!" "I'll divorce you..." Whitney started, her voice trailing off. "Say that again and you're dead!" Klein threatened, half playful, half serious. Whitney burst out laughing, clinging to his arm and pouting sweetly. "If you won't call me, then I'll call you instead. Deal?" "Klein, if you dare ignore my calls, you're so done for," she threatened playfully.
Klein smiled and kissed the top of her head. "So, when are you leaving? Got a date yet?" "Not yet. Honestly, if you didn't say yes, I wouldn't go," Whitney replied, her voice soft, almost bashful. "Alright, alright," Klein said, giving her a playful smack on the butt. "Scoot over. I want to eat the food my wife made for me." Whitney smiled, full of anticipation. "Does it taste good?" Klein arched his eyebrows. "You want the honest answer or the sweet one?" He grinned, teasing her, "It's amazing. And take good care of yourself when you're away.
If you dare get sick, you're in big trouble with me." As for her upcoming life abroad, Whitney couldn't decide if she wanted it to start soon, or if she just wanted it to be over already. She was both excited and nervous, totally conflicted about what was coming. By the end of the night, Whitney's voice was completely hoarse. She could barely get a word out. No matter how many times she called him "honey," it still wasn't enough to satisfy Klein's desire for her.
