Chapter 98: "We should leave. I can't bear to stay any longer," Nyla murmured, her voice barely a whisper, as if she was on her last breath. Seeing her friend's distress, Bonnie clenched her jaw to contain her fury and helped Nyla to leave. As they moved past Ethan, he reached out and grabbed Nyla's hand, making her heart falter. Ethan's taunt was cutting. "Do you really think your antics will drive away the women around me? You'll never be Mrs. Brooks. Drop these trivial plots." At that instant, Nyla felt her heart break apart. She hardly remembered how Bonnie guided her away.
She was enveloped by a piercing coldness. Why was it so freezing? Even with the car's heater at full blast, the cold was unrelenting. "Nyla, talk to me. Please, you're frightening me," Bonnie murmured as she draped her coat over Nyla's shivering form. Her hand gently rubbed Nyla's back, offering comfort. "Let it all out, Nyla. Crying might ease your pain a bit." It took a few minutes, but soon Nyla's quiet sobs escalated into unrestrained weeping, as if she were a child venting long-suppressed misery. "Bonnie, it's so painful.

Why does loving someone hurt this much?" Nyla rested her head on Bonnie's shoulder, her eyes swollen from tears. As she soothed Nyla, Bonnie seethed internally at Ethan. Could he not see the depth of Nyla's affection? Why must he crush her emotions so carelessly? If his heart wasn't in it, why keep her bound in such misery? "Just let him go, okay? Cut off all ties with him," Bonnie urged. Yet Nyla felt trapped. Ethan still had control over her sister-in-law's well-being. She felt powerless to break free. Even her attempts to detach slowly were thwarted by Ethan's indifference.
In her quieter moments, Nyla regretted that night at twenty, when she had disregarded all cautions and given herself to him. Returning with a glass of water, Bonnie found Nyla asleep, overwhelmed with sorrow and unsure how to alleviate her friend's anguish. After pondering her options, Bonnie decided to call Murray. Perhaps starting a new relationship would help Nyla move past her old one, and Murray seemed like an ideal match.
His motives, however, were far from honorable. While Nyla slept, her best friend was devising an elaborate scheme to antagonize Ethan. Nyla woke to find the clock striking nine. Realizing the late hour, she scrambled to collect her belongings for her journey back to Cloudscape Mansion. "Why not stay here instead? What makes you so eager to return?" Bonnie queried, her brow furrowed in confusion. Unable to divulge her reasons, Nyla responded, "There's something I need to handle. I have to go back. Don't worry about seeing me off. We've already booked a taxi." . . .
