---- Chapter 68 Avery's POV Being stuck in the car with Gideon was very similar to being stuck in a cage with a tiger. Every move | made drew his attention. Every time | looked at him, he was staring at me with that predator's gaze. lam sure, had there been room, he would have prowled in circles. Being alone with him was raising my blood pressure. It had occurred to me, on the walk back to the car, that without our marriage agreement, Gideon had no real reason to keep me alive.
Up to this point, | had known that going back to Silvermoon would be a death sentence, but it had felt like my alternatives were to survive with Gideon, or escape into the wilds with my mother and find another pack, or live as rogues. Now | realized that the third option could just as easily be to make us disappear in another way. No one from Silvermoon would look for us. Even if my mother mounted an objection to my disappearance, no one would take her seriously. ---- No one in Nightwolf dared to challenge Gideon. Speaking up for myself had felt like the right thing to do in the moment.

Now | was having regrets. Why couldn't | just have kept my mouth shut? Let Gideon have his jealousy moment. It wasn't like | was actually interested in Ryan, | just was tired of being treated like a piece of meat to be tossed between two Alphas, neither of whom actually wanted to eat me! Actually... Gideon might want to eat me. The way he was staring made it seem like he'd gobble me right up. | just wasn't sure I'd survive the experience. | blushed, and looked away from that intense gaze. His shirt was torn. His knuckles were bloody. And he hadn't said a word to me yet.
| admit, | was morbidly curious what he had gotten up to after we'd parted in the woods, but | highly doubted he'd tell me. So we rode in silence. ---- "Avery." His voice rumbled over the sound of the tires on the road. I glanced up at him. "Come here." He patted the seat next to him. | hesitated. In his current mood, | didn't want to be any closer to Gideon than | had to be. "Come here." | blinked and | was sitting on the seat next to him. Woah.
| had heard Gideon's command voice before, but he hadn't just commanded me, he had overridden every rational thought between me and doing what he wanted. | gaped at him. "Well. Here | am." It came out in a squeak instead of the sassy tone | intended. My thigh was pressed against Gideon's, and | became increasingly aware of the heat of him on this side of the vehicle. If before he had smelled like a thunderstorm, now he felt like a wildfire. What was going on with me? | hadn't felt nearly this ---- overwhelmed when in his presence before.
"Whatever you're doing, can you tone it down a bit?" | gasped, " I'm burning up." He gave me a strange look. "What does Ryan have on you that makes you so interested?" He questioned me. "Nothing! He's a piece of shit!" | said indignantly. Gideon took a slow breath, as though he was willing himself into patience. "Then what else is it?" He demanded, "Every time | turn around you're running back to him." "I'm not running back to him!" | glared, "He's coming after me! Aren't you being a bit hypocritical?" | trailed off. | hadn't meant to say that much.
Was Gideon using his alpha powers to lower my shields? | hissed and scooted away, putting a few inches of space between us. The intense heat diminished somewhat, but | still felt flushed and warm. "What do you mean?" Gideon interrogated. ---- "Nevermind." | tured and looked out the window. | felt the seat dip between us. When I turned back, | nearly screamed.
