Chapter 358
Gideon's POV
| couldn't believe | was actually doing this.
| was almost a forty year old man. | was the Alpha of a strong
and well-respected pack. I'd had more fights won under my belt
than | could count.
And | was sneaking into Evergreen pack in a fucking disguise
like this was | was the main character in some kind of teen
drama movie. This was probably my lowest point yet, which was
saying something, because I'd had a lot of low points over the
past ten years.
“Alpha, are you sure about this?” Tegan, sitting beside me in the
driver's seat, shot me an almost amused look as | adjusted my
disguise in the rearview mirror. He knew better than to laugh at
my expense right now, but | could tell he was struggling to hold
it back. He had been ever since | told him to stop at the dollar
store and | came out with a bag of costume supplies in my hand.
| pulled my baseball hat low over my head, then adjusted my
sunglasses and looked at him. “I’m sure. Now shut up and give
me the mustache.”
“Alpha, this is insane—"
----
“Just give me the fucking mustache, Tegan.”
My Beta reached into his pocket and pulled out the small
package we'd picked up from the dollar store on the way here.
His hand was shaking from how hard he was holding back
laughter. | snatched it and opened it, revealing the cheap, fake
mustache.
"Go ahead. Laugh all you want.” | looked in the mirror, ignoring
my Beta, as | pressed the fake mustache on my upper lip. “But
it'll get the job done, I can assure you of that.”
Tegan turned away, pressing his palm to his mouth and
pretending to look out the window as his shoulders shook. |
rolled my eyes and took one last look at myself, ensuring
everything was in place.
Up close, | had to admit that | looked pretty ridiculous. | had
never worn a fake mustache in my life, not even for a costume,
and | couldn't blame Tegan for laughing. But from further away,
it would do. | didn’t intend for anyone to see me up close.
Evergreen’s annual harvest festival was well known around the
packs. Sebastian was all high and mighty about their crop yields,
so he always made a big show of hosting the festival each year
ever since he became Alpha.
I never went. It was a pack-only affair, anyway. But it also meant
----
that the entire Evergreen pack would be out, crowding through
the fields. It would be chaotic, which was precisely the perfect
environment to sneak in, gather some information, and sneak
out without getting caught.
Therefore, as long as | could pass as someone other than

myself, this silly disguise would do. | wouldn't stay for long; just
enough to find that kid again and get a better look at him.
“Wait at the rendezvous point,” | said, opening the passenger
side door. “And be ready to drive.”
“Y-Yes, Alpha,” Tegan choked out. The moment | shut the door
behind me, | could hear him guffawing so loud that it nearly
shook the car. | rolled my eyes and walked away.
| found the same spot I'd snuck in the last time, when | first
found out Avery was alive. With the festival going on, security
was a bit lax around the border. Sticking to the treeline, | hopped
the fence and walked toward the sound of music and voices.
It didn’t take long to find the festival. The pack grounds were
teeming with people, young and old alike. Kids were running all
over the place, which meant that looking for that kid I'd seen a
few days ago would be like searching for a needle in a haystack.
Carnival workers were stumbling around on stilts and making
balloon animals. The air smelled like food that, admittedly,
made my mouth water.
----
| kept my head down and slipped into the crowd. No one
seemed to notice me, which was good. | carefully searched for
the familiar kid while | kept my senses constantly on high alert,
ready to run in case | was spotted.
Eventually, | spotted a group of boys playing kickball in an
empty area. | recognized him right away; the boy from the other
day. He kicked the ball in a high arc, sending it into the outfield,
and raced around the bases without getting touched by his
opponents.
When he slid onto home base, the kids on his team jumped up
and down and cheered, and he puffed his chest out, soaking up
the praise like a sponge.
Pride surged in my chest at the sight of the boy. If that was my
son, then he was a strong kid already. But along with that pride
came a feeling of bitterness, because if he was mine, then that
meant Avery had kept him from me for unknown reasons for ten
fucking years.
The kids broke for water. | took my chance and walked up to the
boy as he chugged from a nearby fountain. He stopped when my
shadow fell across him, and looked up at me with sharp eyes,
wiping his mouth with the back of his hand.
“Are you wearing a fake mustache?” he asked.
----
“Nope.” | forced a smile. “What's your name?”
“Bjorn.” He looked me up and down. “You're kinda familiar, you
know.”
“Am |?”
He nodded. “I’m new here, though, so I'm not sure where | know
you from.”
“Oh. Where are you from?” | asked.
The boy sighed. “The human lands. My mom brought me here ‘
cuz | was having a hard time in the human schools. | got
expelled for beating up a kid. But he deserved it.”
“m... Sorry to hear that,” | said. | kept my voice even, although
my heart was thudding wildly. A little werewolf boy from the
human lands; that sounded awfully familiar.
He shrugged. “It's whatever. | like it better here, anyway. | always
hated it there. Human kids are weird, and the air smells a lot
better here.” He grinned. “Hey, do you wanna play kickball with
us? You've got long legs, so you could probably get a home run
each time.”
My chest warmed, but | shook my head. “No, | think you can
handle yourself just fine. You're fast. | just saw you.”
----
He puffed up a little at the praise. “Thanks. | was always the
fastest runner in the human schools. Not so much here, ‘cuz
werewolves are way faster. At first, | was the slowest, but I’m
getting faster each day.”
Of course he was. This was my fucking son; | was sure of it now.
Young but strong and fast, and he clearly had a wolf already
despite his age. | could scent it on him.
| opened my mouth to ask another question, but just then, |
heard a familiar voice calling out across the field
“Bjorn! Bjooorn!”
The boy whipped his head around. “Mom?”
| cursed under my breath and slipped back into the crowd,
praying | hadn't been recognized, just as Avery came jogging our
way.
