Chapter 220 I had found a few errors that could cause us some trouble down the line. A few accounts in arrears, or where the Luna had overcharged the villagers for centralized services. I had to spend some hours running around and re-issuing corrected statements. When that was done, I went to re-inventory our stores. It was late in the night by the time I made it, exhausted, back up the hill to the pack house. The light in Gideon's office was still on and the door was open. I was planning on dropping my report on his desk before turning in for the night in my apartment in the village.

With the pack meeting tomorrow, I would need to be well-rested... I was halfway down the hall when I could hear voices from Gideon's office. I hadn't realized that he had visitors, and I paused, not sure if I should continue on to give my report.

"Alpha, thank you for reinstating the Luna," someone was saying, "I didn't want to make a big deal out of it, but the commission rate that Luna Dierdra had been paying was, ah, incorrectly calculated, and I was worried I would have to make up the difference." I could hear the irritation in Gideon's tone as he queried, "And have you been compensated for the full and proper amount?" "Oh yes, Alpha! Luna Avery came around this afternoon and made sure we knew to hold back some on the next shipment to make up the balance.

It was such a relief, sir!" I felt a warm and fuzzy feeling growing in my chest as the pack leaders meeting in his office thanked him for replacing Dierdra, although they were careful to never come right out and accuse Dierdra of malfeasance. They always politely ascribed her 'odd' behavior to her youth, or naivete, or tiredness from pregnancy. I winced at that last one, and viscerally felt secondhand embarrassment for Gideon as he had to painfully explain that Dierdra was no longer pregnant.

The villagers were politely concerned, but it was obvious that their speculation was running rampant as they said their good nights and left Gideon's office as I strolled in to begin my report. They gave me many grateful nods as they passed by, and I felt the warm glow continue as they respectfully indicated their approval of my actions.

"Sorry, Alpha, to take up any more of your time," I said apologetically as I laid my reports on Gideon's desk, "but I figured you might want to see these sooner rather than later..." Gideon seemed exhausted but in relatively good humor as he picked up the top stack of papers, "You are welcome to take up my time, Luna Avery, because it is obvious you have not been wasting it." Still, his face grew more stern and severe as he read through my preliminary reports. I saw his eyes bulge and knew exactly what part he must have gotten to.

"Ah, yes," I said softly, "I was surprised by that number as well. I thought you'd want to go into the 1/3 Chapter 220 +25 Bonus meeting tomorrow with... all the facts." Gideon slapped the papers down on the table with an exasperated sigh. "As if what she had done wasn't outrageous enough," he grumbled, more to himself, I think, than to me, what on earth was she thinking??" The question seemed rhetorical so I kept my mouth shut, but Gideon shot me a bemused glance regardless.

"You tried to warn me." "Well..." I wasn't about to say 'I told you so' but he heard the words I didn't say, and sighed again. The crestfallen sigh of a man who didn't relish the task before him. "If there's nothing else?" I murmured, figuring I would leave him to his bleak thoughts. "Actually, there is one more thing," Gideon glanced up at me, "I have a request to make." "Yes, Alpha?" I asked, perplexed. "I would like you to move back into the Luna's quarters here," he said. I blinked in surprise, "Into my old rooms, sir?" "Yes, they have been cleaned out," "Just like your bed... er...

bedroom?" The words flew out of my mouth in haste, and I wished immediat could swallow them up again. Gideon paused in shuffling the stack of papers and raised an eyebrow at me. The room narrowed to a small tunnel between us, and I wondered if he was thinking, as I was, of that almost-kiss in the garden. "Yes," he answered, deadpan, "There are several holes I need to fill. Did you have someone in mind?" His gaze grew heated as I floundered for something appropriate to say. (1 Was Gideon Nightwolf flirting with me??? I fled into the hallway with a scarlet blush.

I couldn't believe I had almost asked if I could move into Gideon's bed instead! I must be more tired than I thought... Editorial Board Editorial Board Our editorial team works behind the scenes to refine each chapter, maintain consistency, and deliver the best reading experience.
