---- Chapter 339 Avery's POV | didn't hesitate. | grabbed my bag off the chair and started shoving everything I'd brought into it, which thankfully wasn't too much, all while my mother's voicemail played on a loop in my head. Bjorn was missing | pulled my jacket on, slung my bag over my shoulder, and looked around the room once to make sure | hadn't left anything behind. Then, | quickly crossed the room to leave. Suddenly, before | reached the door, a figure stepped out of the closet. Tall, dark, with eyes shining at me in the dim light. "Avery," Gideon's voice said.

"You're alive." | stumbled back, gasping, and pressed my hand to my chest. My heart was pounding so hard it was painful. "How long were you hiding in there?!" | blurted out. He froze, looking at me. "We need to talk." He took a step forward, and | took one back, but it wasn't ---- enough space between us. My wolf surged again, howling louder than ever as Gideon's scent washed over me. "Avery, I've been looking for you for ten years." Gideon's voice slipped into my mind like butter. | didn't have enough time to tamp down our bond before he did it.

My wolf went even more wild, raging against the inside of my chest, pushing at the surface of my skin, begging to be set free. "Mate. Mate. MATE!" | shoved her down with all the force | had. | knew what she wanted. She had been waiting ten years for exactly this moment, and she didn't care about any of the rest of it. She didn't care about what he'd said about me, or what he'd done throughout our "relationship", or how he saw me-not as a person, but a broodmare to produce heirs with. She just wanted her mate back, and she would have walked us straight into his arms if | had let her.

But I knew things she didn't bother to remember. | knew what it felt like to be his mate without hearing the words " | love you". | knew how he saw me. | knew what he'd said when he told Asher that he only wanted our child, never me. | knew what Deirdre had told me in the greenhouse, and even if half of it was designed to hurt me, it didn't mean that none of it was true. ---- And most of all, | knew about Bjorn. If Gideon found out about Bjorn, then it was over. He would take him.

He would take my son back to Nightwolf and raise him as his heir and | would be dragged along behind them, back into that life, useful only as long as | could produce more children and compliant enough not to cause trouble. That was what | was to him. That was all | had ever been. I needed to get out. Gritting my teeth, | crossed the distance between us and shoved him, both hands flat against his chest, putting every ounce of strength | had into it. He was bigger than me and it shouldn't have worked, but | caught him off guard and he went back a step, and that was all | needed.

| was through the door before he recovered. | heard him call my name behind me, but | didn't stop. My wolf howled desperately. She was still howling as | hit the bottom of the stairs, still howling as | pushed through the side door and out into the cold night air, still howling as | threw my bag into the passenger seat and got the car started. She continued to howl as | pulled out of the driveway. But | never stopped. | never looked back. ---- Finding Bjorn was the only thing that mattered. Gideon's POV | stood in the empty doorway for a second, staring at the spot where she had just been.

She shoved me. She looked me in the eye, put both hands on my chest, and shoved me out of her way like | was merely an inanimate object blocking the exit. And then she was gone before I could say anything. She wasn't listening to reason, clearly. Perhaps her view of what was happening was skewed, or perhaps something horrible had happened that was forcing her to run. Either way, | couldn't let her slip through my fingers-not again. Not when I'd only just found her after ten years of searching.
