Chapter 355
Gideon's POV
Avery looked at me. Her face, which had just been smiling, fell.
Her eyes narrowed, and her mouth twisted into a scowl. Then,
she turned and walked away without a word.
My wolf howled desperately as | watched her go. Frustration and
anger surged through my chest, hot and sudden like a red-hot
poker had been stabbed into my heart. In that moment, | felt that
| would have preferred it if the security guards at her office had
simply shot me with their guns.
After everything we had been through together, after ten years of
miserable separation and searching for her and missing her, she
couldn't even look at me.
It was like she hated me. No, worse than that; it was like she felt
nothing for me at all. Like | was just a ghost from her past that
she wanted to forget about
“Avery! Avery!!” | shouted, gripping the bars of the gate. The
guards grabbed at my arms, but | didn’t let go. “AVERY!”
She didn’t look back. | watched as she disappeared into the
house, and there was nothing | could do about it. | tried to reach
out through the mate bond | knew we still shared, but there was
----
nothing there. It was as if she was cutting it off from her end,
shielding her mind so | couldn't communicate with her.
Sebastian, the bastard, calmly walked over to me with his hands
in his pockets. He nodded his chin at his men, who released me
and stepped back.
“Hello, Alpha Gideon.” He stopped just out of reach, obviously
wanting to make sure | couldn't grab him through the bars,
which, admittedly, had crossed my mind.
“I need to talk to Avery," | said
He looked at me like I'd just said something stupid.
“She doesn’t want to talk to you.”
“’m her mate.”
“That doesn't matter.” He pulled one hand out of his pocket and
picked an invisible piece of lint off his shirt. “She made it very
clear that you are to stay well enough away from her while she’s
here.”
A painful pang shot through my chest at those words. Avery had
made it clear. Just as she'd apparently done back in the human
lands, telling all of her employees to treat me like some kind of
intruder.
It made no sense. | had done nothing to Avery. The last time
----
we'd seen each other, the only focus on my mind had been to
protect her. There had been some misunderstandings caused by
Asher, but she was no fool. She had to know that it was all
fabricated. That | loved her, even if | had been too much of a
coward at the time to say those words out loud.
“Why?” | blurted out.

Sebastian lifted a brow. | suddenly felt small and pathetic for
saying it, but it was too late.
“That's none of your business,” he said.
My lip curled indignantly, revealing partially extended fangs. My
wolf was pushing just beneath the surface of my skin, snarling
at me to put him in his place.
“Now, if you don't mind,” Sebastian said, “I've got to get back to
her.”
He turned as if to leave, but | hissed, “Are you dating her?”
Sebastian froze. He wasn't facing me, but | could see the tense
line in his shoulders. My words had struck a chord. | knew, then,
that | must have been right. He was dating Avery. My mate. |
wasn't sure how long it had been going on, but it didn’t matter.
Avery was mine.
“I'll challenge you,” | said, “if that’s what it will take to get her
back.”
----
Sebastian looked at me over his shoulder. He didn’t look the
slightest bit scared or put off, but rather simply amused. Like I'd
just told him a joke. Like | was a joke.
“Even if you managed to win,” he replied, “she still wouldn't
choose you again.”
With that, he left. | shouted some choice words after him that |
was not particularly proud of, but he didn’t acknowledge them.
His guards grabbed me roughly by the shoulders and escorted
me off the premises, shoving me toward my car with force.
For the second time in as many days, | was thrown out onto the
street like a wayward criminal.
| snarled under my breath as | fumbled in my pocket for my
keys. This wasn't over; they could try to humiliate me all they
wanted, but it wouldn't work. | would go to any length to get
Avery back. She had to know that | loved her, and that whatever |
did to push her away, | was sorry. I just wanted her back.
Just as I was opening my car door, | felt a presence at the back
of my neck. | turned, spotting a group of kids playing a ways off,
behind the fence. One of them was looking at me strangely. 1
| turned fully to face him. It was a boy, no older than ten—which
was strange, because | sensed that he had a wolf, and kids that
age didn’t usually have one yet—with dark hair and bright eyes.
----
He had a sullen look about him, but there was something else
there, too. A fire beneath his skin that | recognized in myself
every time | looked in the mirror.
He was a young Alpha. | was sure of it.
My wolf recognized him, but from this far away, | couldn't quite
put my finger on it. My first instinct, though, was obvious.
Was that my son?
The timing would match up, if he was the age | thought he was.
Avery had allegedly been pregnant ten years ago before she
disappeared. If she went to the human lands and had our child
and kept him from me all this time...
It didn’t make any sense. Why would Avery keep my child from
me? It seemed cruel and unreasonable, and it made everything
feel even more confusing.
Avery wouldn't have kept my son from me unless she truly
thought | was the worst person imaginable, no better than
Deirdre or Asher.
But why? | hadn't hurt her. | only ever cared about her. 1
| watched the boy for a moment longer. He gawked at me like
he, too, felt that strange connection between us. Then, one of
the other kids pulled at him, calling him away. He shot me one
last look over his shoulder before he turned and ran off.
----
| stood there for a long while, staring after him as he
disappeared into the sunset.
Was that truly my son? Had Avery kept my child from me for the
past ten years?
Now, more than ever, my resolve had strengthened. If that was
truly my son, if Avery had truly kept him hidden from me all this
time, then | needed to get closer to both of them and find out
why. 7
| looked over my shoulder at the pack one last time. The guards
were still watching me. If they wouldn't let me in, then | would
have to find a way to get in without being caught.
All | needed was a few minutes. Just enough time to tell Avery |
loved her... And to meet that child that | was pretty sure was my
son.
